We would like to give a special shout out to the Friends of the Veterans Memorial Senior Center for securing the funding from the Sequoia Health Care District in order to assist the City of Redwood City for the cost of the free lunch program. This is truly the definition of a community partnership! The photo on the cover was taken looking west over the Senior Center at 2:50 pm on September 9th, 2020. It was so dark and eerie that day due to the wildfires. As you can see even the outdoor lighting on the building was on during the middle of the day! Hopefully we won’t see many days like that anymore. In this issue of the Sentinel we have included some Funny songs, an I Spy game and some upcoming community events. There is a page if you would like to start a new Pen pal to exchange letters. Also, we have taken some pictured of friends that just wanted to say hi! Louise Tobin Hucko: A Biographical Sketch Native-Texan Louise Tobin Hucko (b. 1918, Aubrey, TX) grew up in Denton in a large family that sang and played music together. She was the fourth youngest of eleven children and the only one to make music her profession. Louise remembers the teenagers playing ukuleles on the porch and rushing home from school at lunch to listen to Louis Armstrong on the radio. After winning a CBS Radio Talent Contest in 1932, she toured the larger Texas cities as part of the Interstate Theatre Circuit, singing with society dance orchestras, led by such figures as Hyman Charninsky and Al Kvale. After joining Art Hicks and His Orchestra in 1934, she met Harry James who was playing first trumpet. This ensemble was one of several Texas territory bands of the 1930s that ventured outside the state in hopes of reaching a national audience. In late 1934-early 1935 they made their way to Albany, New York, with stops in Oklahoma and Ohio. By this time Benny Goodman had hit; the swing era had begun. Shortly after their arrival in New York, the Art Hicks Orchestra disbanded. A very young Louise, age 15, and Harry, who had just turned 18 married in May 1935. The newlyweds, who kept the elopement a secret from her family, were now looking for work. Harry accepted an offer to play third trumpet with the Herman Waldman Orchestra back down south in Shreveport. “He hated it and actually lost his lip for awhile!,” Louise recalls. With the help of Texan-band leader, Ligon Smith, Louise found work around Texas, singing with orchestras led by Smith, Charlie Davis, and Carlos Shaw.

Great Instrumental
I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). Born into a family of traveling circus performers in 1916, James looked primed to live a life in the family business, performing as a contortionist as a young boy. At age 10, however, he began taking trumpet lessons from his father, developing a stunning level of technical proficiency by the time he was in his mid-teens. Joining up with the Benny Goodman Orchestra in 1937, James quickly became one of the band’s star soloists. Leaving Goodman two years later, he formed his first orchestra (featuring a young Frank Sinatra as its male vocalist). The band’s greatest commercial success would come in the early 1940s, when it expanded to include a string section and focused on achieving a “sweeter” sound than most contemporary outlets.

March 11, 1954 Introduction: Frankie Newton, “master of the mutes”, was one of the greatest trumpets of the swing era with extreme personality and originality. The marginal value of an eventual new discovery of a Frankie solo is greater to this author than of any other trumper in jazz history! The solography below is basically the one printed as Vol. 9 (1978) in my Jazz Solography Series with additional material appearing after the publication, and with related comments given as ‘postscripts’. There are a very few missing items, please help! History: Joined Lloyd W. Scott’s band in Huntington, west Virginia, whilst the band were on their way to Pittsburgh and New York (1926). Played in New York with Lloyd Scott, also worked with Elmer Snowden (summer 1927). With Eugene Kennedy’s band (early 1929), the rejoined Scott’s band (then led by Cecil Scott), was occasionally featured as a vocalist. With Cecil Scott (early 1930), then worked with Chick Webb, Charlie Johnson and Elmer Snowden. Worked briefly with Garland Wilson on radio WEVD (1932), left New York for a while, then worked with Sam Wooding. Recorded with Bessie Smith in 1933, with Charlie Johnson from ca. September 1933 until entering hospital in late 1935. Brief return to Charlie Johnson, then with Teddy Hill from spring 1936 until spring 1937. Complications followed a tonsillectomy (May 1937), worked with John Kirby from July until September 1937, recovered from injured back, played in brief -lived Mezz Mezzrow Disciples of Swing (November 1937).

Spragg October 2013 1 Preserving Broadcasting and Musical History Many individuals and organizations have possession of the surviving recordings of radio programs. There were several methods by which radio programs circa 1935- 1950 containing musical content were recorded and preserved. Following is a general summary of the types of recordings that were made and how many of them survive at the Glenn Miller Archive and elsewhere. 1. Radio Networks The national radio networks in the United States as of 1941 consisted of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) with its Red and Blue Networks, the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) and the Mutual Broadcasting System (Mutual). In addition, several regional networks existed with member stations that were also affiliated with the national services. Mutual was a cooperative effort led by several large local station owners in Chicago (WGN), Los Angeles (KHJ) and New York (WOR). NBC also operated an International Division or its White Network, which broadcast shortwave signals overseas from transmitters on both coasts operated by the General Electric Company. NBC and CBS each owned the federally regulated maximum of local stations, including: NBC Red – WEAF, New York; WMAQ, Chicago and KPO, San Francisco; NBC Blue – WJZ New York; WENR, Chicago and KGO, San Francisco. NBC did not own stations at this time in Los Angeles. Its powerful Southern California affiliate was the Earle C. Anthony Company, owner of KFI (Red) and KECA (Blue). CBS-owned stations included WABC, New York, WBBM, Chicago and KNX, Los Angeles.
