This is because Bujang valley has the prospects to grow as one of the potential domestic tourism destinations in this country, especially in terms of ecotourism. Blessed with the geographical endowments of hilly terrain, mountains, rivers, waterfalls, beachs, islands, bays and forest reserve, Bujang valley is a suitable destination for tourists to visit. However, with all these specialities, to what extent are the important natural prospects made use of, especially with respect to the development of ecotourism in Bujang valley? In order to answer that question, this study has applied qualitative methods by referring to books, journals and proceedings in the library. Quantitative methods were also applied in this study by conducting field research through questionnaires and interviews to identify the natural prospects for ecotourism development in Bujang valley. The findings discovered that three locations are the main choices of local tourists to visit, namely Pantai Merdeka, Tanjung Dawai and Gunung Jerai.

  • Observations on Earthworks and Fortifications in Kedah from 600-1800 CE Based on Local Historical Literature
Malaysia Architectural Journal Observations on earthworks and fortifications in Kedah from 600-1800 CE based on local historical literature. Meljev Singh Sidhu1 *[email protected] Received: 1 Jan 2021 Final version received: 20 March 2021 Earthworks and fortifications have not been given sufficient attention in research on the early architecture of Kedah although they are regularly mentioned in historical texts. This paper attempts to redress this imbalance. A baseline date of 600 CE has been proposed based on evidence provided in the Salasilah atau Tarikh Kerajaan Kedah and Al-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah that proposes an early seventh century date for the origin of the Kedah royal dynasty, after which earthwork constructions commenced. This method of construction lasted for more than a millennium but fell out of favour in the late eighteenth century CE with the arrival of the British, who introduced more durable materials. Therefore, the year 1800 CE is taken as the terminus ante quem for this type of construction. This paper argues that the types of earthworks and fortifications mentioned in the Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa and in the Al-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah before the thirteenth century CE cannot be substantiated by archaeology. From the thirteenth century CE onwards, the Al-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah is validated by archaeological discoveries made in locations mentioned in the text. Similarities exist between the earthworks and fortifications described in the writings of the Al-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah and in studies made on Malay settlement types. The embankments surrounding the entire settlement were constructed of earth. Consistency in the description of fortifications throughout the Al-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah suggests that this type of structure may have antecedents as far back as the seventh century CE.

  • A Study of Urban Design Elements in Tanjung Dawai, Kedah, Malaysia
A Study of Urban Design Elements in Tanjung Dawai, Kedah, Malaysia Nurul Nadiah Zaini, Nur Atilia Ahmad Sani, Ahmad Sanusi Hassan, and Asif Ali Downloaded from http://meridian.allenpress.com/awg/article-pdf/22/1-2/102/2598354/1480-6800_22_1_102.pdf by guest on 26 September 2021 School of Housing, Building & Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia Malaysia Boonsap Witchayangkoon Department of Civil Engineering, Thammasat University Thailand This study focuses on the urban design element in Tanjung Dawai village in Kedah with reference to Kevin Lynch theory. In spite of the quasi-urban sprawl of Tanjung Dawai created by the residents, it remains unknown to the neighborhood community due to lack of information regarding urban development planning. Thus, the purpose of this study will define the existence of the urban element in Tanjung Dawai. The qualitative research design of this study is based on the methodology AIFAD (Abbreviation for Archives, Interviews, Fieldwork, Analytic diagrams, and Drawings). The research findings showed that the most dominant element in Tanjung Dawai are the landmarks and edges (Lynch 1960). The pattern of the streets created by the local people encourages increasing demand in fish production and land settlement, creating the edges promotes the area, rendering it more lively, dynamic and interesting. The landmarks and edges influence the local lifestyle and uninten- tionally establish ‘architectural place-making’ in the urban settlement of Tanjung Dawai. Keywords: Tanjung Dawai, fishing village, urban design elements, AIFAD, urban space, Malaysia Introduction It is necessary to understand how the rural area can develop by inte- grating the elements of urban design. The planning process has always had an urban emphasis, with elements of urban-rural linkages and the interactions between urban and rural as well as links with the people, economy and envi- ronment of rural localities (Hassan 2002).
