The Complete Stories
The Complete Stories by Franz Kafka a.b.e-book v3.0 / Notes at the end Back Cover : "An important book, valuable in itself and absolutely fascinating. The stories are dreamlike, allegorical, symbolic, parabolic, grotesque, ritualistic, nasty, lucent, extremely personal, ghoulishly detached, exquisitely comic. numinous and prophetic." -- New York Times "The Complete Stories is an encyclopedia of our insecurities and our brave attempts to oppose them." -- Anatole Broyard Franz Kafka wrote continuously and furiously throughout his short and intensely lived life, but only allowed a fraction of his work to be published during his lifetime. Shortly before his death at the age of forty, he instructed Max Brod, his friend and literary executor, to burn all his remaining works of fiction. Fortunately, Brod disobeyed. Page 1 The Complete Stories brings together all of Kafka's stories, from the classic tales such as "The Metamorphosis," "In the Penal Colony" and "The Hunger Artist" to less-known, shorter pieces and fragments Brod released after Kafka's death; with the exception of his three novels, the whole of Kafka's narrative work is included in this volume. The remarkable depth and breadth of his brilliant and probing imagination become even more evident when these stories are seen as a whole. This edition also features a fascinating introduction by John Updike, a chronology of Kafka's life, and a selected bibliography of critical writings about Kafka. Golter Master of Arts School of Music and Dance September 2017 Title: Women Rappers and Neoliberal Indifference: Reevaluating the Racial and Sexual Politics of Gangsta Rap in the Early 1988-1994 This thesis asks why women gangsta rappers have been excluded from virtually all academic and popular discourses about the genre. While ‘positive’ and ‘empowering’ New York-based female rappers in the late 80s and 90s are often referenced by those concerned with gangsta rap’s misogynistic tendencies, women rappers in Los Angeles who performed alongside male gangsta rappers, were represented on labels managed by gangsta rappers, and were otherwise self- consciously engaging in the gangsta rap style are almost never acknowledged by either the genre’s defenders or detractors. -

Extending 1,956 Kilometers on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Connects, Xining, Capital of Qinghai Province, and Lhasa, Capital of Tibet
Extending 1,956 kilometers on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway connects, Xining, capital of Qinghai Province, and Lhasa, capital of Tibet. It ends Tibet’s history without railway, and sets a new record for the world’s highest railway. As 960 kilometers of it sits at 4,000 meters above sea level, the designers and engineers of this railway had to solve various difficulties in its construction. The three major challenges faced were the fragile ecosystem, the lack of oxygen, and permafrost. Many foreign experts had thought that it was impossible for the Chinese to conquer these difficulties. However, a few years later, they were shocked at this man-made world wonder, and reputed it as a miracle in engineering. Since its operation, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has become one of the busiest railways in Asia. Millions of travelers flock to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to experience this great work on the snowfields. In order to help travelers know more about it, Tibettravel.org has collected abundant information about the highest railway in the world, including how the engineers overcame the challenges of its construction, where travelers can take a train to Lhasa, how to book train tickets to Tibet, what travelers can experience along the railroad, and the impacts of the railway, etc. 1. Why was the Qinghai-Tibet Railway built? Why was the Qinghai-Tibet Railway built? The answer is quite simple, that is, to improve the transportation on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and to boost development of this region. In China, there is a proverb saying that "If people want to be rich, they must first build roads." Before 2006, most people could only get into or out of Tibet by road. -
Amnesty – Episode 13
The Adventure Zone: Amnesty – Episode 13 Published August 9th, 2018 Listen on McElroy.family Griffin: Winter has come to Kepler, West Virginia. [music plays] Griffin: It is late December, and the reliable crowd of out of state tourists has nestled into Kepler‘s hotels and resorts, seeking an authentic, snow- bound, holiday retreat. Twinkling lights cover the town‘s buildings and street lights, and a freshly cut, garishly decorated tree stands in front of city hall. It‘s night time, and not a creature stirs in Kepler‘s festive streets. But up the road, to the west, a van speeds down state route 66. The vehicle, emblazoned in the ancient logo of the Monongahela Forest Service is driven by one Rick Dannon, the agency‘s chief arborist. With his working day of tending to the forest‘s trees behind him, he has packed up his tools and left the forest to head home. But through his windshield, the winding highway begins to vanish before his eyes, as a sudden, furious snowstorm materializes in front of him. Thick, white flakes, whipped into a frenzy by a powerful wind blanket his vision in seconds. Panicked, he bears down on the brake pedal and wrestles with the steering wheel, attempting to maintain control of the vehicle and pull over to the side of the road. And then… as quickly as it appeared… the storm passes. The van‘s wipers kick on, revealing the road before him. Rick breathes a sigh of relief, then turns the wheel, pulling back onto the highway to continue his commute.
