Performing Shakespeare in Contemporary Taiwan by Ya-hui Huang A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire Jan 2012 Abstract Since the 1980s, Taiwan has been subjected to heavy foreign and global influences, leading to a marked erosion of its traditional cultural forms. Indigenous traditions have had to struggle to hold their own and to strike out into new territory, adopt or adapt to Western models. For most theatres in Taiwan, Shakespeare has inevitably served as a model to be imitated and a touchstone of quality. Such Taiwanese Shakespeare performances prove to be much more than merely a combination of Shakespeare and Taiwan, constituting a new fusion which shows Taiwan as hospitable to foreign influences and unafraid to modify them for its own purposes. Nonetheless, Shakespeare performances in contemporary Taiwan are not only a demonstration of hybridity of Westernisation but also Sinification influences. Since the 1945 Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party, or KMT) takeover of Taiwan, the KMT’s one-party state has established Chinese identity over a Taiwan identity by imposing cultural assimilation through such practices as the Mandarin-only policy during the Chinese Cultural Renaissance in Taiwan. Both Taiwan and Mainland China are on the margin of a “metropolitan bank of Shakespeare knowledge” (Orkin, 2005, p. 1), but it is this negotiation of identity that makes the Taiwanese interpretation of Shakespeare much different from that of a Mainlanders’ approach, while they share certain commonalities that inextricably link them. This study thus examines the interrelation between Taiwan and Mainland China operatic cultural forms and how negotiation of their different identities constitutes a singular different Taiwanese Shakespeare from Chinese Shakespeare. -

Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks. -

From Tribute to Trinkets: The Western Mechanical Clocks in China By Eden Wei-Yuan Cui Western clocks served as a bridge between the western world and the Chinese imperial court, and advanced East-West cultural exchanges during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Their history in China and their story in the palace are forever captivating and enchanting. Clocks were more than just gifts from missionaries: they were the emperors’ favorites. The Origin of Western Clocks in China Western clocks first entered China during the Ming dynasty and spread throughout the country like no other western object. The journey that they made, however, was not easy at the beginning. Had the following unexpected incident not happened, Ming and Qing China would probably never have been the way it was. In 1601, Matteo Ricci, an Italian missionary, presented Ming Emperor WanLi with two exquisitely made automatic clocks. Unfortunately, the gifts were totally forgotten by the emperor at first, who was known for not attending his own court meetings for more than thirty years in a row. By the time he remembered that these two exotic gifts even existed, the clocks had stopped working. This was when Emperor WanLi summoned Ricci back to the court, asking him and his people to “fix” these gifts, or merely rewind them to make them function properly once more. Different from China’s own time-telling devices, such as the sundial or water clock, western mechanical clocks were new to the emperor and he became impressed. Since then, these exotic products have become the key to connecting two worlds as new clocks continued to make their way into China. -

Podpis ABSTRAKT Xiangsheng je humorný vypravěčský žánr založený na satiře a komentáři společnosti, který je dnes považován za nejvýznamnějšího zástupce tradičních populárních umění quyi 曲艺. Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na takzvaný dialogický xiangsheng (duikou xiangsheng 对口相 声), který je představením dvou vypravěčů. Hlavními body zájmu jsou 50. léta 20. století, kdy byl xiangsheng využit pro potřeby propagandy nového státního zřízení, a období od roku 2005, kdy do veřejného povědomí vstupuje nejvýznamnější vypravěč současnosti Guo Degang 郭德纲 (1973–), který skrze návrat k tradici navrátil xiangsheng zpět na vrchol popularity. Cílem práce je komparativní studie xiangshengů z těchto dvou sociokulturně velmi odlišných období, a to zejména skrze formální a obsahovou analýzu xiangshengu „Noční jízda“ (Yexing ji 夜行记), který existuje ve verzi z 50. -
