Auditor's lieport.

I have this day examined the foregoing accounts of the selectmen and those of the treasurer, and find the foregoing statements correct.

F. S. GBOVER, Auditor.

Dana, Feb. 3, 1903. :

REPORT OF THE Superintendent of Schools.

T<) tlm School Committee of Dana I have the honor to submit the following report of the condition, work and needs of the schools for the year ending

February 1, 1903.

This being my first year in Dana lias necessarily been devoted to the general management of the schools, and to a study of the needs and conditions. Yet it seemed advisable that some important changes be made at the beginning of the fall term. The most important of these was mentioned in the last annual report of your committee, — the closing i >f the Plain school and the opening t) \ ;l primary school at Dana Centre. It was imperative that the school at the Centre he graded.

Forty 2>upils in all grades cannot do really successful work in one room. As there were only eight pupils at the Plain school they could be carried to the Centre, and save quite a sum of money to the town, as the cost of transportation is less than the cost of maintaining a school. Many strong arguments have been advanced on both sides of the question of transpor- tation, but these amount to little unless applied to a case in hand. A general change has been effected in the methods of primary instruction and improved methods introduced through- out the course. Quietly have these changes been made, and with the hearty co-operation of the committee, teachers, and people. Permit me to express my appreciation of the support that has enabled me to attain whatever measure of success has rewarded my endeavors. 53

All our schools arc graded schools. The three lower grades are in the primary rooms, where all the work is conducted to suit the age and experience of the child, and excellent results are manifest. The intermediate and grammar grades are up- stairs. In some r this is an advantage, as the you] pupils learn much unconsciously from the work of the older ones — the glory of the ungra led school.

TEACHERS1 MEETINGS.

Several teachers etings have been held, ami a plan of the work in th< •..-. ibjects and grades lias been out- lined for the t. s, and means and methods for carrying it

. d. Besides these, in November the

ere of the entire district met at Millington for a talk on first grade Reading, by Mr. J. S. Cooley of Worcester, and in

54 fundamental processes of arithmetic, — including fractions, besides being taught to read, and learning something of language and geography. Year by year the course goes on expanding those princi- ples and broadening the knowledge which the child has thus gained. With the adoption of a course of study, re-grading will be effected with as little inconvenience to the pupils as possible. VISITING DAYS.

As is customary, one day each term has been allowed the teachers for visiting and observing the work of other schools. I believe this to be productive of good results. The following

regulations govern the use of the day : Teachers are required to visit one day cadi term. The day for visiting and the work to be visited is arrai by the superintendent.

A report of each visit, with remarks upon strong and weak points of the school visited is made at the next teacl meeting. MUSIC. DBA WING, ETC.

Under the excellent instruction of Miss Amsden, good work has been accomplished in this department, and the results merit the continuance of the work. For information of the work done, I refer you to the report of the instructor of music. Realizing the importance and educational value of drawing, both in the training of eye and hand and in the development of thought and expression, I have asked the teachers to give some time each week to this department. Considering the

amount of time that it was possible to devote to it, I think very good work has been done. I hope we may be able to give this subject more time in future. 1 i

55

Some work has been 'lone with reed and raffia. This is in the nature of an experiment, and the results are certainly encouraging. I believe manual training will become more and more a recognized part of the work of the schools. ATTENDANCE,

attendance for this school year has been far from sat-

tory. EducatioE ia the child's right. Since he cannot enforce, the --Tate assumes that duty. The laws in regard to attendance should he enforced, and truant officers should un- derstas it is their duty to carry them out, and thai they will be supported in their efforts.

BUILDINGS.

The building at the Centre is in good repair, well suited

and i for the work of the schools. At North Dana

Deah Sir: — The progress made in vocal music during the pasi year has been quit< re is mani- fested a spiril of earn - and painstaking, both by teachers pupils, and which, if continued, will bring i

My aim is to trail] the children to become, a- tar as pos- sible, self reliant. This is bein - intly requiring Individual singing, which many of the children thor- oughly enjoy, and in which the resi are deeply inter

I have used the "Individual Sighl Si with our other studies during the year, and I am glad t<> Bay that much of the progress in sighl singing is due t<> this most im- portant individual singing. In this each child IS put upon his own resources. He wishes to do as well as possible, and, as a natural consequence, he becomes stronger in his ability to r< ad music.

Careful work is being done in every grade, and all are striving for good tone quality and correctness of pitch. There is much room for improvement in these respects, hut if the same enthusiastic spirit continues, good results must follow. 57

I visited the schools iu the cities of Springfield and West- field, and was glad to see that their work is much the same as ours, and I am sure that the music of Dana schools would compare favorably, if placed side by side with that of t hot- schools.

For the earnest support of all during the year I am most grateful
