Barber Piano Sonata In E-flat Minor, Opus 26 Comparative Survey: 29 performances evaluated, September 2014 Samuel Barber (1910 - 1981) is most famous for his Adagio for Strings which achieved iconic status when it was played at F.D.R’s funeral procession and at subsequent solemn occasions of state. But he also wrote many wonderful songs, a symphony, a dramatic Sonata for Cello and Piano, and much more. He also contributed one of the most important 20th Century works written for the piano: The Piano Sonata, Op. 26. Written between 1947 and 1949, Barber’s Sonata vies, in terms of popularity, with Copland’s Piano Variations as one of the most frequently programmed and recorded works by an American composer. Despite snide remarks from Barber’s terminally insular academic contemporaries, the Sonata has been well received by audiences ever since its first flamboyant premier by Vladimir Horowitz. Barber’s unique brand of mid-20th Century post-romantic modernism is in full creative flower here with four well-contrasted movements that offer a full range of textures and techniques. Each of the strongly characterized movements offers a corresponding range of moods from jagged defiance, wistful nostalgia and dark despondency, to self-generating optimism, all of which is generously wrapped with Barber’s own soaring lyricism. The first movement, Allegro energico, is tough and angular, the most ‘modern’ of the movements in terms of aggressive dissonance. Yet it is not unremittingly pugilistic, for Barber provides the listener with alternating sections of dreamy introspection and moments of expansive optimism. The opening theme is stern and severe with jagged and dotted rhythms that give a sense of propelling physicality of gesture and a mood of angry defiance. -

BUSONI) Relatively early in his career, Bach worked in Weimar as the court organist. While serving in this capacity, he produced his Orgelbüchlein (little organ book): a collection of 46 chorale preludes. Each piece borrows a Lutheran hymn tune, set in long notes against a freer backdrop. “Ich ruf’ zu dir,” a general prayer for God’s grace, takes a particularly plaintive approach. The melody is presented with light ornamentation in the right hand, a flowing middle voice is carried by the left, and the organ’s pedals offer a steady walking bassline. The work is further colored by Bach’s uncommon choice of key, F Minor, which he tended to reserve for more wrought contrapuntal works. In this context, though, it lends a warmth to the original text’s supplication. In arranging the work for piano, around the year 1900, Busoni’s main challenge was to condense the original three-limbed texture to two. Not only did he manage to do this, while preserving the original pitches almost exactly, he found a way to imitate the organ’s timbral fullness. -

A robustly applied theoretic apparatus hones our appreciation of a given corpus, especially one such as film music, for which comparatively little analytical attention has been devoted. Just as true, if less frequently offered as a motivator for analysis, is the way in which the chosen music theoretical system stands to see its underlying assumptions clarified and its practical resources enhanced by such contact. The innate programmaticism and aesthetic immediacy of film music makes it especially suited to enrich a number of theoretical practices. A habit particularly ripe for this exposure is tonal hermeneutics: the process of interpreting music through its harmonic relationships. Interpreting cinema through harmony not only sharpens our understanding of various film music idioms, but considerably refines the critical machinery behind its analysis. The theoretical approach focused on here is transformation theory, a system devised for analysis of art music (particularly from the nineteenth century) but nevertheless eminently suited for film music. By attending to the perceptually salient changes rather than static objects of musical discourse, transformation theory avoids some of the bugbears of conventional tonal hermeneutics for film (such as the tyranny of the “15 second rule”) while remaining exceptionally well calibrated towards musical structure and detail. -

Notes on Chromatic Harmony © 2010 John Paul Ito Chromatic Modulation Enharmonic modulation Pivot-chord modulation in which the pivot chord is spelled differently in the two keys. Ger +6 (enharmonically equivalent to a dominant seventh) and diminished sevenths are the most popular options. See A/S 534-536 Common-tone modulation Usually a type of phrase modulation. The two keys are distantly related, but the tonic triads share a common tone. (E.g. direct modulation from C major to A-flat major.) In some cases, the common tone may be spelled using an enharmonic equivalent. See A/S 596-599. Common-tone modulations often involve… Chromatic mediant relationships Chromatic mediants were extremely popular with nineteenth-century composers, being used with increasing frequency and freedom as the century progressed. A chromatic mediant relationship is one in which the triadic roots (or tonal centers) are a third apart, and in which at least one of the potential common tones between the triads (or tonic triads of the keys) is not a common tone because of chromatic alterations. In the example above of C major going to A-flat major, the diatonic third relationship with C major would be A minor, which has two common tones (C and E) with C major. Because of the substitution of A-flat major (bVI relative to C) for A minor, there is only one common tone, C, as the C-major triad includes E and the A-flat-major triad contains E-flat. The contrast is even more jarring if A-flat minor is substituted; now there are no common tones. -

HOW TO FIND RELATIVE MINOR AND MAJOR SCALES Relative minor and major scales share all the same notes–each one just has a different tonic. The best example of this is the relative relationship between C-major and A-minor. These two scales have a relative relationship and therefore share all the same notes. This relationship holds true for ALL major and minor scale relative relationships. To find the relative minor scale from a given major scale, count up six scale degrees in the major scale–that is where the relative minor scale begins. Tonality and Modulation
Theory Dr. Crist Tonality and Modulation Tonality - The hierarchical relationship of tones to a pitch center or "tonic." Tonal music involves the use of twelve major and twelve minor keys, the scales that comprise these keys, and the tertian harmonies generated from the notes of these scales. A harmony may be constructed on each of the seven diatonic scale degrees resulting in seven different harmonic functions. The seven different functions exhibit varying levels of strength but all serve to support the tonic which is embodied in the tonic triad. Tonality is achieved through a variety of means. The strongest tonality would involve: (1) Only diatonic pitches. (2) A pitch center (tonic) which exhibits a sense of stability and to which all tonal movement flows. (3) Strong cadences. Perfect authentic cadences (PAC) especially. (4) Begin and end with the tonic key. (5) Pedal points and ostinatos which involve reiteration of the tonic scale degree. (6) Strong harmonic progressions. In particular, dominant to tonic progressions which involve the leading-tone resolution to tonic. (7) Doubling of the tonic pitch. The tonic is given long rhythmic durations. The tonic appears in the outer voices. The tonic is framed by neighboring tones. The following progression employs many of the above mentioned techniques creating a strong sense of C major. PAC I IVP I V7 I I6 IV V7 I Modulation - The process of moving from one key to another. There must be a distinct aural shift from the original key to some other key center. A modulation consists of three parts: (1) a tonality is confirmed, (2) the tonal center changes, (3) a new tonality is confirmed by a cadence in that tonality. -
