Normalising the Presence of People with Disabilities in the Fashion Industry Leggi l'articolo su beautynews Normalising the presence of people with disabilities in the fashion industry NOVEMBER 22nd, 7 pm – 8 pm CET Live on photovoguefestival.vogue.it Embracing gender fluidity, the diversity of bodies and beauty types, regardless of race and ethnic group, is a conquest that is changing the aesthetic standards of our times, thereby proceeding to change people’s cultural and identity codes in terms of inclusivity, openness and dialogue. And yet, much still needs to be done, for instance, with regard to the representation of disability. An issue dear to Photo Vogue Festival and its Artistic Director Alessia Glaviano from its first edition. Glaviano will talk about the changes that we are witnessing in regard to the representation of people with disabilities in the fashion industry with Aaron Philip, the first model with disability to be the face of a major high fashion brand, and Claudia Walder, editor, creative director and disability activist. Talk in English BIOGRAPHIES pagina 1 / 6 Aaron Philip Tyler Mitchell Aaron Philip Aaron Philip refuses to be defined. Hailing from The Bronx by way of the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda, Aaron was discovered through her social media where she took notice of the lack of representation of trans women of color within the fashion industry, let alone anyone with a disability. Represented by Community New York, she has emerged as a trail-blazer, determined to represent her communities as a model. With a steadfast, sincere approach to her career, Aaron (pronounced A-ron) is driven by the lack of disability representation in the media, specifically in the fashion and beauty realms. Right off the bat, Aaron has been a catalyst of change by openly speaking about her experience with bigotry from being a black model. She's actively worked towards an inclusive industry via her editorial features in i-D, Dazed, ELLE, Teen Vogue, and Allure magazines, as well as Refinery29 and Now This. With a successful modeling career in bloom, Aaron has laid a fantastic foundation for what she hopes many others will soon follow alongside her. pagina 2 / 6 Claudia Walder Jamie Kendrick Claudia Walder Claudia Rose Walder is an editor, creative director and disability activist from London, UK. She is a former fashion stylist with a first-class degree in Fashion Journalism. As a stylist, Claudia’s work has been seen on high-profile names including Stormzy, D Double E, Munroe Bergdorf and in publications including Riposte Magazine, Sukeban, Fucking Young! and Bricks. After becoming sick with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis in 2017 Claudia founded Able Zine - a publication and platform dedicated to disabled and chronically ill communities, young people and creatives. Able Zine tackles stereotypes surrounding disability, seeing orders from all over the world and receiving feedback from Tate Modern and the BBC, who described the publication as “sexy”. Her work has also been profiled in this year’s Dazed 100 and the September issue of British Vogue. pagina 3 / 6 Alessia Glaviano Alessia Glaviano Alessia Glaviano is the Brand Visual Director of Vogue Italia and Director of the Photo Vogue Festival. Glaviano is a leading figure in the panorama of international photographic criticism. Besides curating a series of interviews with the Masters of photography for Vogue Italia’s website and instagram, which have acquired enormous popularity among the community of people interested in photography and which are also broadcast on Sky Arte channel, in 2011 Glaviano launched Photo Vogue, an innovative platform on which users can share their own photographs knowing they can rely on the curatorial supervision of professional photo editors. At a time when photography was already ubiquitous online, Alessia felt that what was missing was a curated platform dedicated to it. pagina 4 / 6 Conceived as a community with a strong sense of belonging, as of today, Photo Vogue counts over 230,000 photographers, from amateurs to professionals, hailing from all over the world, with a shared passion for photography and the desire to help each other and grow together. Anyone can register and upload images of all genres, from portraiture to reportage, fashion and street photography. Curating a pool of incredible image-makers from all around the world, Photo Vogue is a great example of diversity behind the camera. Many of Photo Vogue photographers have grown to become some of the most interesting voices in contemporary photography, who now regularly produce editorials and branded content for the most prestigious international magazines. The mission of Photo Vogue has always been to champion talent and contribute to shaping a richer and more diverse industry. In order to have a physical and virtual space in time to bring the community together and further the conversation around the promotion of creativity, diversity and justice in image-making, in 2016 Milan hosted the first edition of the Photo Vogue Festival. The event marked the first conscious fashion photography festival dedicated to the shared ground between Ethics and Aesthetics, bound to an influential fashion publication, and engaging the whole city of Milan with talks, exhibitions and photography-related initiatives. The 4 editions of the festival in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 were always met with critical and public success. Besides the editorial activity, Alessia holds lectures and conferences on a regular basis. Some of the institutes and universities she was invited as guest lecturer include: IED, Bocconi University and the Milan Polytechnic. Glaviano was invited to participate as jury member in numerous internationally acclaimed photography contests including the World Press Photo and the Festival International de Mode et de Photographie à Hyères; and has participated in several portfolio review sessions, including the “New York Times Portfolio Reviews”.

Music and the Moving Image XVII ONLINE DEPT. of MUSIC and PERFORMING ARTS PROFESSIONS Program in Screen Scoring MAY 27 – MAY 30, 2021 ABSTRACTS 1. Thursday, May 27, 2021, 12:00-1:30pm ET Keynote For Stage and Screen: A Conversation with Howard Shore Paul Chihara, Interviewer 2. Thursday, May 27, 2021 2:00-3:30pm ET Buster’s meta-geographical jump: A comparative audiovisual analysis of multiple scores for Keaton’s non- linear ‘silent,’ Sherlock Jr. Phillip Johnston. Sydney Conservatorium/Australian Institute of Music Buster Keaton’s silent masterpiece Sherlock Jr. (1924) shifts nonchalantly between the worlds of reality, film and dreams in the blink of an edit. While later synchronized-sound films have scores attached, Sherlock Jr. had no fixed score, and is left to be paired with different music in contemporary performances. Marco Bellano writes of the paucity of comparative studies of different scores for individual silent films, citing the potential benefit as “a deeper comprehension of film language.” To that I would add a unique opportunity to examine the relationship between music and image/narrative, regarding dramaturgy, technique and semiotics. Relatively early in the film there is a visual/metaphysical sequence in which Keaton’s projectionist/detective falls asleep and, in his dream, tries to enter the world of the film-within-a-film. He inadvertently enters during a film edit to a change of scene; what follows is a set piece in which he inexplicably jumps from scene to scene in a montage sequence of comically diverse backgrounds, a meta-joke on film editing itself.
