Abstract: This paper takes up pressing, yet sorely neglected, questions of disability and media to argue for a reimagining of Australia to be more inclusive of this group. To do so, we outline theoretical approaches to a reimagining of disability in society and culture. We then identify and debate the lessons from disability and media studies that help us to reimagine Australia. In particular, we focus on what we describe as the three key media models of disability in Australia—representation, access and digital inclusion. A key aim throughout this paper is to include the insights of people with disabilities themselves using the media in contemporary Australia. It especially examines Netflix’s disregard for the theatrical release, as it is the most portentous issue that could reshape the film industry, and Hollywood’s opposition to it as revealed through the 2019 Academy Awards where the issue was brought into sharp relief. At the same time, this paper also questions whether theatrical distribution makes a film any more cinematic by examining how Hollywood film production has been largely concentrated on tentpoles and franchises, while Netflix has been producing diverse films often shunned by the studios. In this light, it concludes the changes wrought by Netflix, including its bypassing of the theatrical release, are not likely to be reversed. UTV Acquires the Feature Film Rights of Ashwin Sanghi's
UTV acquires the Feature Film rights of Ashwin Sanghi’s ‘Chanakya’s Chant’ ~ A film based on the #1 National Bestseller to go on floors soon ~ Mumbai, Wednesday, June 15th, 2011: UTV Motion Pictures has acquired rights to Ashwin Sanghi’s national bestseller - Chanakya’s Chant, published by Westland. The interesting fast-paced story based on politics in two radically different eras will now be adapted into a film by the studio. Chanakya's Chant, a historical political thriller, released by Westland in January 2011, shot into the Top-5 Bestsellers of India within 2 weeks of its launch, proving that Chanakya’s neetis are as relevant today as they were in ancient times. The book narrates two parallel political tales, one in Chanakya’s puranic Bharat 2300 years ago and the other in post-independence contemporary India. While the ancient story is largely historical, based upon Chanakya’s rise to power and the clever tactics applied by him towards installing Chandragupta Maurya on the throne, the modern story is mostly fictional and tells the tale of Kanpur’s Pandit Gangasagar Mishra who draws inspiration from the master strategist Chanakya and employs his strategies in a modern context to get his protégée Chandini Gupta appointed to the highest office in India. It argues that the tune’s history and accumulated use in films enabled Hollywood to employ it in an increasingly com- plex manner to evoke essential questions about female sexuality, class, and race. Recent critical writing on American cinema has focused attention on the struc- tures of racial coding of gender and on the ways in which moral transgressions are routinely characterized as “black.” As Eric Lott points out in his analysis of race and film noir: “Raced metaphors in popular life are as indispensable and invisible as the colored bodies who give rise to and move in the shadows of those usages.” Lott aims to “enlarge the frame” of work conducted by Toni Morrison and Ken- neth Warren on how “racial tropes and the presence of African Americans have shaped the sense and structure of American cultural products that seem to have nothing to do with race.”1 Specifically, Lott builds on Manthia D iawara’s argument that “film is noir if it puts into play light and dark in order to exhibit a people who become ‘black’ because of their ‘shady’ moral behaviour.2 E. -

Film industry was one of the biggest lobbying groups behind the new DRM provisions in India, and the industry has been consistently trying to portray online piracy as a major threat. The Indian film industry also extensively uses John Doe orders from the high courts in India to prevent the access of Internet users to websites suspected to be hosting pirated material. This paper explores two questions in the context of the new DRM provisions in India: ( 1) Is online piracy a threat to the Indian film industry? and (2) Are the present measures taken by the film industry the optimal measures for addressing the issue of online piracy? 77 Performing Arabness DOI: 10.1515/abcsj-2014-0028 Performing Arabness in Arab American Stand-up Comedy YASSER FOUAD SELIM Sohag University Abstract This article deals with the dramatic art of stand-up comedy. It locates Arab American stand-up comedy within a broader American humorous tradition and investigates the way Arab American performers use this art to negotiate and (re)construct their identity. The main question in this article is the way Arab American stand-up comedians define their relationship to the Arab and the western worlds in the process of establishing their Arab American identity. Three humor theories – the relief theory, the incongruity theory, and the superiority theory – are deployed in the study to examine the representation of Arabness in selected Arab American performances. The study argues that Arab American comics minstrelize their own diasporic origin through reinscribing a range of orientalizing practices in order to claim their Americanness. There is very little academic and scholarly attention given to the study and analysis of stand-up comedy despite its old history and present popularity. Arab American stand-up comedy is the most marginalized in the tradition. This article is an attempt to fill a gap in the study of stand-up comedy in general and the criticism of Arab American artistic expression in particular. The article starts with defining stand-up comedy and tracing its historical connection to the negotiation and projection of ethnicity. -
