The Papal Nuncio to Great Britain, Archbishop Antonio Mennini, speaking on behalf of Pope Francis, said: “It gives me great joy to be here today for the installation of your new Archbishop, especially as you have chosen this particular day of St Joseph the Worker. This marks a new beginning for you all.” Following the Gospel, Archbishop Malcolm McMahon gave an inspiring homily during which he highlighted the Hillsborough inquests as a shining example of the search for truth. Archbishop McMahon said that justice will be done for the 96 people who lost their lives and for their relatives. He said the families of the victims had shown a dignity over the last quarter century, which was an example to everybody. "God has endowed the people of Liverpool, Lancashire and the Isle of Man with many great gifts, not least constancy in our Catholic faith,” he said. “The Martyrs of Lancashire testify to their love of Jesus’ name and their fidelity to the truth. -

INTRODUCTION ‘The feast of feasts, the new drink, the famous and holy day…’ With these words and in other poetic language, St. John of Damascus (ca. 650 - before 754) extols Easter in the paschal canon attributed to him.1 The liturgical calendars of both Eastern and Western Christianity commemorate this noted Eastern theologian on December 4. Of course, not only on Easter, but in any celebration of the Eucharist, the paschal mystery is being commemo- rated. The Eucharist is the nucleus of Christian worship. Preferably on the Lord’s Day, the first day of the week, Christians assemble to hear and expe- rience the biblical words of liberation and reconciliation, to partake of the bread and cup of life which have been transformed by the Holy Spirit, to celebrate the body of Christ and to become this body themselves. Hearing and doing the word of God, ritually sharing His gifts and becoming a faith- ful Eucharistic community make the Church spiritually grow. Yet, it is the Easter festival, the feast of the crucified and resurrected Christ par excellence, in which all of this is densely and intensely celebrated. The first Christians were Jews who believed that in Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah had come. Parish Priest's Report 2011
The Oratory Catholic Church of St Aloysius, Oxford Parish Priest’s Report 2011 2011 has been another busy and grace-filled year for our parish, with many events to report. In addition to the statistics attached, we have also seen two ordinations: both of the same person – Fr Nicholas - first to the diaconate and then to the priesthood, and the clothing of a novice: Br Oliver. In February, Fr Daniel was elected Provost, and Fr Robert has taken a well-earned sabbatical after over 20 years as Superior. He went first to the Oratory in Genoa and then (after the American visa finally arrived) to the Philadelphia Oratory. Fr Richard has returned to us after his time as Provost of the Birmingham Oratory, meaning that we now have nine members of the Oratorian community here. Funerals have taken place in our church in 2011 of Mary Abel, Alexandra Konopelska, Martin Moran, Mary Burnell, Paul Carroll, Basil Burwood-Taylor, Mary Selwood, Andy Sivewright, Patrick O’Kane, Vera Ryhajlo and Caja Bayley. Since the beginning of 2012 we have also had the funerals of Professor Sir Michael Dummett, Valerie McNichol, Baby Marco Pezzini and David Whitaker. May they rest in peace. Obituaries for David Whitaker and Sir Michael Dummett have been printed in the national newspapers, so it will suffice to say that we shall miss the twice-yearly confusion of the Emeritus Wykeham Professor of Logic whenever the clocks went back or forward. I would like to single out two of those who died during 2011 who were particularly long-standing and faithful parishioners: Mary Burnell was the inspiration of the St Aloysius’ Drama group since the 1950s. -

Thompson Three Perceptions of the Fall of Communism: American, Russian, and East European, and Their Possible Role in Future Conflicts* Henry Kissinger recently wrote that two distinctly different processes are now taking place in Russia and eastern Europe. The first is the abolition of communism and reintroduction of private property, and here both Russia and her neighbors are of one mind. The other is the unravelling of the 300-year-old Russian empire, and here Russia and her neighbors represent conflicting interests. While all of Russia's neighbors welcome the debacle of the empire, not all Russians who are anti-communists are also anti-imperialists (Houston Chronicle 26 March 1992; International Herald Tribune 6 July 1992). In a similar vein, Sovietologist Stephen Erlanger remarked: "The collapse of Communism is a great relief to many people; the collapse of the union, which was really the Russian empire, is less welcome." 1 * Research for this article was supported in part by a grant from the Interna tional Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), with funds provided by the Andrew W. For all practical purposes, the identification of Russia with the Soviet Union existed not only in the minds of American Sovietologists but also in the minds of Russians. -

Pope talks with Putin about Russia’s role in Ukraine and other conflicts Pope Francis welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Vatican July 4, and the two discussed the ongoing wars in Eastern Ukraine and in Syria, the Vatican said. Russia plays a major role in both conflicts. At the end of the 55-minute private meeting, Alessandro Gisotti, interim director of the Vatican press office, issued a statement describing the discussions as “cordial.” The pope and president, he said, “expressed their satisfaction at the development of bilateral relations,” which included the signing in Rome July 4 of a collaboration agreement between the Vatican’s Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital and pediatric hospitals in Russia. Pope Francis and Putin “then turned their attention to various questions of relevance to the life of the Catholic Church in Russia,” Gisotti said, as well a discussion of “the ecological question and various themes relating to current international affairs, with particular reference to Syria, Ukraine and Venezuela,” where Russia has been supportive of embattled President Nicolas Maduro. It was the third time Pope Francis and Putin have met at the Vatican. They met in November 2013 and again in June 2015. Putin arrived late for each of the meetings, including July 4 when he was an hour late. When reporters entered the room after the two had met privately, Putin told the pope, “Thank you for the time you have dedicated to me.” “It was a very substantive, interesting discussion,” he said. Pontificia Università Gregoriana La soppressione della Compagnia di Gesù, decretata da Clemente XIV tramite il breve Dominus ac Redemptor (21 luglio 1773), ebbe luogo in tutto il mondo, fuorché nell’Impero Russo governato allora dall’Imperatrice Caterina II la Grande (nei domini di Federico II di Prussia la soppressione fu effettuata nel 1776 e nel 1780). Nello Stato russo, infatti, il decreto pontificio non fu mai canonicamente promulgato. In questo modo i religiosi che si trovavano lì continuarono la loro vita nella maniera propria della Compagnia di Gesù, secondo le Costituzioni e le regole dell’ordine. Vissero da gesuiti in condizioni straordinarie, nel periodo che va dal 1773 al 1814 – anno in cui la Compagnia fu canonicamente restaurata in tutto il mondo per opera di Pio VII (bolla Sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarum, 7 agosto 1814). Questa parte dell’ordine è conosciuta comune- mente come “La Compagnia della Russia Bianca”. Le vicende della Compagnia di Gesù nell’Impero russo negli anni 1772-1820 si svol- sero sotto tre Imperatori.
