Valley Tech Goes Red for Heart Health

Although a snowstorm closed the school during National Wear Red Day on February 5, the wintry weather didn’t stop students and staff at Blackstone Valley Tech and its School Based Health Center from celebrating the heart-healthy event on Wednesday, February 10. It featured an informational display on heart disease and its remedies, a heart-healthy lunch special for teachers, and a raffle for several handmade Go Red-themed scarves. 22 UPTON-MENDON TOWN CRIER February 19, 2016 Sports Northbridge, Nipmuc Swim Co-Op Strong at Leagues, Sectionals By Chris Villani Sports Reporter/Columnist The Northbridge swim co-op, featuring several athletes from Nipmuc, took home trophies and strung together a pair of strong finishes at the Mid- Wach League Meet as well as the sectional meet. The girls team, which has swimmers from Northbridge, Nipmuc, Grafton, and Sutton, placed third out of 12 teams at the league meet and finished eighth among the 49 teams at last weekend’s sectional meet at M.I.T. “It was a big shock,” head coach Denise Foster

She went on to place sixth and third, respectively, in the two events at the sectional meet and earned a qualifying time for states. OPEN HOUSE Senior Shannon Dowd finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke and fourth in the OPEN HOUSE butterfly at leagues and also posted state-qualifying times. Tayahna Rowland, who finished fourth in the 200 yard individual medley, and senior Carly Thibodeu, who was eighth in the FEBRUARY 20 butterfly, also put together strong showings at the Mid-Wach meet. 1010 amam -- 11 pmpm In addition to the Nipmuc contingent, Sutton junior Gabby Ritzer won the league diving competition and will be headed to states along with Grafton athletes Chloe Deveney, and Ethan Mills. Sunday Brunch Buffet The state meet is set for Friday at Boston University for the girls. The boys will swim at BU on Saturday. First Sunda of ever month “This season, like all seasons for me, has special meaning,” Foster said. “I get to coach Next Brunch Dates: March 6 and April these young swimmers in a sport they may have never done before. Seeing them drop time in all their events and having a lot of fun.” 1 per person am - 1pm Foster said this year’s group, despite coming together from four schools, was very close knit. “It’s like a family,” she said, adding her swimmers were sad to see the season coming to an end. “Four schools become one family and when it’s over I know some of the swimmers are moving on to their next chapter in their life, to graduation.” As with past seasons, one of the initial challenges for the program was simply coming up with the funding to keep going. The Northbridge co-op is entirely self-funded, relying on a variety of fundraisers and support from the local communities to stay afloat. Foster said the process of drumming up money for next season has already begun. She said she hopes the success will lead to new opportunities that will limit the amount the team has to bring in on its own, or eliminate it altogether. “Maybe a miracle will happen where we don’t have to fundraise,” Foster said. “That would be wonderful. Then I can go back to what I love most, coaching.”
