Red Nichols From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Background information Birth name Ernest Loring "Red" Nichols the hood man Born May 8, 1905 Ogden, Utah, US Died June 28, 1965 (aged 60) The Mint Las Vegas Genres Jazz Occupation(s) Musician, bandleader, composer Instruments Cornet Associated acts California Ramblers, Paul Whiteman Ernest Loring "Red" Nichols (May 8, 1905 – June 28, 1965) was an American jazz cornettist, composer, and jazz bandleader. Over his long career, Nichols recorded in a wide variety of musical styles, and critic Steve Leggett describes him as "an expert cornet player, a solid improviser, and apparently a workaholic, since he is rumored to have appeared on over 4,000 recordings during the 1920s alone." Biography Early life and career Nichols was born on May 8, 1905 in Ogden, Utah. His father was a college music professor, and Nichols was a child prodigy, because by twelve he was already playing difficult set pieces for his father's brass band. Young Nichols heard the early recordings of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, and later those of Bix Beiderbecke, and these had a strong influence on the young cornet player. His style became polished, clean and incisive. In the early 1920s, Nichols moved to the Midwest and joined a band called The Syncopating Seven. When that band broke up he joined the Johnny Johnson Orchestra and went with it to New York City in 1923. New York would remain his base for years thereafter. In New York he met and teamed up with trombonist Miff Mole, and the two of them were inseparable for the next decade.

  • 1959 Jazz: a Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959
GELB, GREGG, DMA. 1959 Jazz: A Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959. (2008) Directed by Dr. John Salmon. 69 pp. Towards the end of the 1950s, about halfway through its nearly 100-year history, jazz evolution and innovation increased at a faster pace than ever before. By 1959, it was evident that two major innovative styles and many sub-styles of the major previous styles had recently emerged. Additionally, all earlier practices were in use, making a total of at least ten actively played styles in 1959. It would no longer be possible to denote a jazz era by saying one style dominated, such as it had during the 1930s’ Swing Era. This convergence of styles is fascinating, but, considering that many of the recordings of that year represent some of the best work of many of the most famous jazz artists of all time, it makes 1959 even more significant. There has been a marked decrease in the jazz industry and in stylistic evolution since 1959, which emphasizes 1959’s importance in jazz history. Many jazz listeners, including myself up until recently, have always thought the modal style, from the famous 1959 Miles Davis recording, Kind of Blue, dominated the late 1950s. However, a few of the other great and stylistically diverse recordings from 1959 were John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz To Come, and Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, which included the very well- known jazz standard Take Five. My research has found many more 1959 recordings of equally unique artistic achievement.

  • William Russell: Jazz Lover, Collector, and Musicologist an Annotated Bibliography
William Russell: Jazz Lover, Collector, Musicologist An Annotated Bibliography Ben Wagner Born Russell William Wagner in 1905, William (Bill) Russell was a violinist; an avant-garde composer deeply interested in percussion; accompanist to a touring puppet troupe; a meticulous musical-instrument repairman; a jazz-record producer; an archivist; a writer; and, above all, a New Orleans jazz collector of extraordinary breadth. More than anything else, he simply loved classic New Orleans–style jazz, which he called the “best music I’d ever heard.”1 He sought out obscure, old-time jazz players and was instrumental in the revival of the career of Bunk Johnson. Russell privately showed many kindnesses to jazz musicians down on their luck, encouraging their careers. In an age of segregation, Russell had many close associations with African Americans, organizing recording sessions in houses and rented halls because blacks were not allowed in New Orleans recording studios, nor could they play openly with white musicians. He did much to document and advocate New Orleans as the true birthplace of jazz. Although there were some inaccuracies in his early writings—and the debate continues about the many-faceted origins of American jazz—Russell’s overall analysis has stood up well against later scholarship. He certainly was one of the first to note the importance of place in the development of jazz. From the early 1930s to the end of his life, Russell acquired and documented anything he could find related to jazz: oral-history recordings and transcripts, jam-session recordings, musical instruments, photographs, programs, postcards, ads, city guidebooks, correspondence, sheet music, magazines.

ABSTRACT “Where East Texas Dances”: The Cooper Club of Henderson, Rusk County, and Popular Dance Bands, 1932-1942 Michelle Linsey Holland, M.A. Mentor: Thomas L. Charlton, Ph.D. A historical study of the Cooper Club in Henderson, Texas, which was open from 1932 to 1942, uncovers an exciting period in both American and East Texas history. Nationally, dance orchestras embarked on tours of the United States, playing one-night stands in small towns. Locally, the nightclub existed during the great East Texas oil boom. Under the management of owner Hugh Cooper, the Cooper Club became a staple for music lovers in East Texas who appreciated its elegant atmosphere and high caliber of entertainment. Local, regional, and national dance bands played one-night stands and brought to the oil field the latest in popular sweet music, swing, and jazz. The Cooper Club has significance and is deserving of scholarly research, for it shines light on the social and cultural history of Henderson, Texas, from 1932 to 1942, as well as the excitement of famous orchestras coming to a small town.
