It explores the experience of distinctive deacons within the Church of England today. It does so through interviews with a respondent cohort of sixteen distinctive deacons in active ministry. Secondly, this thesis explores the reasons why the distinctive diaconate has failed to grow and flourish. It does so by drawing attention to the ways in which the distinctive diaconate has been misused, and the inability of the Church hierarchy to act upon the recommendations of various reports that is has commissioned. It also explores the effect that collegial relationships, stipendiary status, and methods of deployment have had on this ministry. In its conclusion, this thesis presents an argument for the retention and development of the distinctive diaconate in the ministry of the Church of England. It was designed by A F Scott of Norwich and constructed by Girling and Smith of Cromer. The surviving section of the 19th century town house, formerly known as Claremont House, is not of special interest and not included in the listing Cromer Baptist church, built in 1902 and opened in 1903, designed by AF Scott of Norwich and built by Girling and Smith of Cromer, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Architectural interest: its unaltered Church Street elevation is a well-executed composition in a Free Gothic Revival style; * Interior: it retains the majority of its original fixtures and fittings, including its pulpit, backboard, bench pews and unique folding seats to the aisle walls; * Group value: it forms a group with Nos. 18 to 28 (even) Church Street; the Albion Hotel, Church Street; and Nos. 1 to 7 (consecutive) The Gangway, all listed at Grade II. 2 History - After the Great Eastern Railway extended its network to Cromer in 1877, the town came to be seen as an attractive place to live and visit. Among the new residents were a number of evangelical Christians - known as the Cromer Friends - who sought to establish a Baptist church in the town. In order to achieve their objective they turned to the Norfolk Association of Baptist Churches for help and a small sub-committee was subsequently formed. It comprised, along with a small number of Friends, Harry Gould, Treasurer of the Association, and George Green, later Lord Mayor of Norwich, both of whom were Deacon’s at St Mary’s Baptist Church in Norwich, the county mother church.

Copyright © 2008 by the Monastery of the Ascension, Jerome, ID 83338 and available online at the website of the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. The calendars of each of the three Anglican churches of the British isles contain varied group commemorations, I suggest these entries are read only in the province where they are observed and have indicated that by the use of italics and brackets. However, people, particularly in the Church of England, are woefully ignorant of the history of the other Anglican churches of our islands and it would be good if all entries for the islands are used in each province. The Roman dates are also indicated where these vary from Anglican ones but not all those on the Roman Calendar have an entry. The introductions to the saints and celebrations in the Anglican calendars in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in Exciting Holiness, ed. Brother Tristam SSF, The Canterbury Press, 1997, have been added where a saint did not already appear in the martyrology. These have been adapted to indicate the place and date of death at the beginning, as is traditional at the reading of the martyrology. For the place of death I have generally relied on Wikipedia. For Irish, Welsh and Scottish celebrations not appearing in Exciting Holiness I have used the latest edition of Celebrating the Saints, Canterbury Press, 2004. These entries are generally longer than appear in martyrologies and probably need editing down even more than I have done if they are to be read liturgically.

It adapts the concept of theological imaginary from Charles Taylor’s concept of social imaginary, seeking to capture for this research how church planters imagine church, their expectations, and deeper theological ideas and images that undergird these expectations. This thesis examines how the theological imaginary of church- planting practitioners compares to themes in the missional and emerging church literature of the last 20 years. It examines the significance of cultural changes in so-called postmodernity and post-Christendom as two contextual elements in the imaginary significantly impacting current church planting. A survey of key, representative literature in the missional and emerging church movements in the areas of postmodernity, post-Christendom, missional and emerging church draws out the major theological themes that might be nourishing church planting and the theological imaginary on the ground.

    Ann Gurney 20 April, 2019 Photograph: Jim Grover Ann was born in 1927 in Plumstead; an only child. At the end of World War Two, aged 18, Ann spent three years at Gilmore House in Clapham, a Church of England training college for women originally founded in 1891 by Isabella Gilmore, who promoted the ministry of Deaconesses and who is now recognised by a wall plaque in Southwark Cathedral. Ann’s first parish role was in Walworth, where she spent five years on the staff at St Paul’s Church, Lorrimore Square. During that period Ann felt called to a life of ministry and so she returned to Gilmore House to train as a Deaconess [a ministry which was open to women who could not at this stage be ordained], which she became in 1954 at the age of 27. As a Deaconess she joined St John’s Church in Catford for two years, before becoming an assistant chaplain at a Church College of Education. In 1959, at the age of 32, Ann returned to Gilmore House but this time as its Principal, the ‘Head Deaconess’, a post she held for 11 years until the college’s closure in 1970. She then moved to the Diocese of London, where she became the Bishop’s adviser for Lay Ministry, and Head Deaconess, for 17 years, supporting women in their ministry until she reached the retirement age of 60 in 1987. 1987 marked the year in which women were first ordained as Deacons and so Ann was admitted to the Diaconate for, what seemed to her to be, the second time...one month before her retirement.
