Lambeth Palace Library, London, SE1 7JU Tel: +44 (0)20 7898 1400 1984 108 Deaconesses Introduction: This guide to deaconesses within the Church of England is based on research by the late Revd Dr Sr Teresa Joan White who worked extensively on the history of the deaconess Community of St Andrew (CSA) and the deaconess order in general. This version (produced in 2020) aims to give useful (while not comprehensive) information on deaconesses, known or believed to be deceased. It is based on various sources of information. Historically deaconesses did not appear in Crockford’s Clerical Directory, until they could be ordained as deacons (from 1987) and priests (from 1994) – these are the abbreviations d. and p. in the right hand column. Sr Teresa also collated the following figures for deaconess ordinations by year: 1862 1 Elizabeth Ferard 1863 2 Trained by Elizabeth Ferard 1883 50 had been ordained in London for CSA and independent (unattached) 1883 35 W London, 3 East London, 31 in other dioceses as in Register 1887 Deaconesses working in 13 dioceses 1889 CSA had 18 Community Dss, 8 Associate Dss, and 8 Probationers 1894 St Andrew’s, Portsmouth, had 37 Deaconess Sisters, Probationers and Church Workers 1900 208-220 ordained since 1862. LDDI had 63; ELDI, WDDH & RDDI ordained between 23-33 each. Salisbury 15. Nine other dioceses averaged 5 each.     Martyrology An Anglican Martyrology - for the British Isles 1 of 160 Martyrology Introduction The base text is the martyrology compiled by Fr. Hugh Feiss, OSB. Copyright © 2008 by the Monastery of the Ascension, Jerome, ID 83338 and available online at the website of the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. The calendars of each of the three Anglican churches of the British isles contain varied group commemorations, I suggest these entries are read only in the province where they are observed and have indicated that by the use of italics and brackets. However, people, particularly in the Church of England, are woefully ignorant of the history of the other Anglican churches of our islands and it would be good if all entries for the islands are used in each province. The Roman dates are also indicated where these vary from Anglican ones but not all those on the Roman Calendar have an entry. The introductions to the saints and celebrations in the Anglican calendars in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in Exciting Holiness, ed. Brother Tristam SSF, The Canterbury Press, 1997, have been added where a saint did not already appear in the martyrology. These have been adapted to indicate the place and date of death at the beginning, as is traditional at the reading of the martyrology. For the place of death I have generally relied on Wikipedia. For Irish, Welsh and Scottish celebrations not appearing in Exciting Holiness I have used the latest edition of Celebrating the Saints, Canterbury Press, 2004. These entries are generally longer than appear in martyrologies and probably need editing down even more than I have done if they are to be read liturgically.

  • Ann Gurney Ann Was Born in 1927 in Plumstead
    Ann Gurney 20 April, 2019 Photograph: Jim Grover Ann was born in 1927 in Plumstead; an only child. At the end of World War Two, aged 18, Ann spent three years at Gilmore House in Clapham, a Church of England training college for women originally founded in 1891 by Isabella Gilmore, who promoted the ministry of Deaconesses and who is now recognised by a wall plaque in Southwark Cathedral. Ann’s first parish role was in Walworth, where she spent five years on the staff at St Paul’s Church, Lorrimore Square. During that period Ann felt called to a life of ministry and so she returned to Gilmore House to train as a Deaconess [a ministry which was open to women who could not at this stage be ordained], which she became in 1954 at the age of 27. As a Deaconess she joined St John’s Church in Catford for two years, before becoming an assistant chaplain at a Church College of Education. In 1959, at the age of 32, Ann returned to Gilmore House but this time as its Principal, the ‘Head Deaconess’, a post she held for 11 years until the college’s closure in 1970. She then moved to the Diocese of London, where she became the Bishop’s adviser for Lay Ministry, and Head Deaconess, for 17 years, supporting women in their ministry until she reached the retirement age of 60 in 1987. 1987 marked the year in which women were first ordained as Deacons and so Ann was admitted to the Diaconate for, what seemed to her to be, the second time...one month before her retirement.

  • Introduction
    Introduction On behalf of the Trustees, I am pleased to present this, the fourth annual report of the Archbishops’ Council. In what proved to be another year of change, the Archbishops’ Council saw the largest renewal in its membership since it was established in 1999. We have been blessed since our establishment with people who are committed to serving God through their engagement with the Council and we give thanks for them. We are deeply grateful for the contributions of those members who have left and we are delighted to welcome the three new appointed members amongst our number. We are already benefiting from sharing our common task with them and learning from their experiences and insights. 2002 also saw the appointment of Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury following the retirement of Archbishop George Carey. Archbishop George’s commitment to the idea and aims of the Council was deep and he was instrumental in helping it to take shape. We thank God for his ministry and offer our prayers for a long, happy and active retirement. We look forward to sharing in Rowan’s ministry in this new stage of the Council’s life. In October, following Philip Mawer’s departure to take up his new post as Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, the Council was also pleased to welcome William Fittall as new Secretary General. In expressing our thanks to Philip for his indefatigable work with the Council from the beginning, we wish to assure William of our continued prayers and support in his task of helping us to shape the future of the Archbishops’ Council.
