A Nice Introduction to the FlycatcherBy JCALThis a very workmanlike volume on a little known aircraft that has been delivered at a very reasonable price point. (Most importantly, I've enjoyed the book.)This is an unpresumptuous, brief monograph on the Flycatcher. The book follows the typical format of pre-history, design, usage, etc. The color plates and line drawings are excellent. The technical descriptions and reproduced illustrations are adequate for the size and price-point of this book as well.Recommended for those with an interest in post WWI aircraft and aircraft of the Royal Navy. Not recommended for modelers. If you have interest in the aircraft or post WWI RN aviation operations, this volume represents a good purchase.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Orange series gets back to basicsBy Jim DavisThis is the 16th book in MMP Book's Orange Series. It introduces a new trade dress to this series but despite this the book in many ways represents a retreat to the format of the very earliest books. The size is back to the European B5 size (6-1/2" x 9"), the 96 pages are the lowest since the the earliest volumes, and the color profiles are all collected in the back of the book instead of spread throughout the text. It's still a square bound card cover but now the rear cover has an additional color profile instead of ads for other volumes of interest. All that said, the book is quite well done. The first 23 pages are a detailed background, design, development, and production history of the aircraft. Of particular interest was the comparison to the Parnall Plover. There then follows a 30-odd page service history which is remarkably comprehensive and includes quotes from biographies of Flycatcher pilots. Although the aircraft never saw war service it did play its part against piracy in Chinese waters and unrest in Palestine. Its use as a trainer and in public displays is not neglected either. There are a few pages devoted to its role as a testbed for catapult, metal float, and metal propeller development. Three pages cover the unsuccessful Flycatcher II. The text concludes with some pages devoted to a modern Flycatcher replica, a technical description, markings, and specifications. The text is supported throughout by excellent black and white photographs all expertly captioned. The replica section has some nice color photos of the aircraft in flight. The "In Detail" section is a bit of a disappointment with only 5 pages of color closeups of the aforementioned replica, now in a museum. The replica is not faithful down to detail equipment level so is of limited use for this purpose. Were there no contemporary photos that could have been used? In any event, there are three pages of drawings from the technical manuals of the aircraft which are very informative. The book concludes with 13 pages and the rear cover devoted to color profiles and not a few plans. The Flycatcher carried many colorful and varied markings in its 10 year career so these are a real treat. The book also has 8 pages of 1/48th scale line drawings of the usual MMP high quality. It should be pointed out that the book takes pains to cover the aircraft's role as a floatplane as well as a landplane. This is reflected throughout the book in photos, color profiles, and line drawings.Highly recommended. I don't have a lot of Flycatcher references (the Fairey Putnam volume is my best) so this book is very welcome. I hope someone will do a comparison of the interwar US and British carrier aircraft at some point.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Nice little book with great photos and illustrationsBy Jared A. ZichekNice little book on the Flycatcher with excellent scale drawings, color profiles, manual extracts, etc. Ideal for modelers and history buffs alike. The Fairey Flycatcher was the archetypal between-the-wars Fleet Air Arm fighter. The idiosyncratic biplane was loved by crews and public alike, despite its unlikely appearance and moderate performance, and it was famed more for its aerobatic prowess and public demonstrations than glory on the field of battle. The Flycatcher was agile yet forgiving, tough, reliable, and fully aerobatic, and, bedecked in a dazzling range of bright, colorful markings, was the perfect mount for expressing the youthful high spirits of naval pilots in the 1920s and 30s. The Flycatcher was never engaged in a war, though it played a significant role in lsquo;colonial policingrsquo; of trouble spots in the British Empire, and served the Royal Navy doing everything from tackling pirates off the Chinese coast to entertaining crowds at Schneider Trophy events with aerobatic displays. This book is the most comprehensive on the Flycatcher yet published, with numerous photographs of the aircraft in service, several of which have never been published before, walk around photographs of the replica built by John Fairey, illustrations from contemporary manuals, and color artwork. No. 32-009 Fairey Flycatcher The Fairey Flycatcher was a British single-seat biplane carrier-borne fighter aircraft made by Fairey Aviation which served in the period 1923 to 1934. The Flycatcher was designed to meet the requirements of Specification N6/22 for a carrier and floatplane fighter to replace the Gloster Nightjar. One of the earliest aircraft specifically designed for operation from aircraft carriers, the Flycatcher could take off in under 50 meters! It is probably the most well-known of the Royal Navy’s Interwar fleet fighters, serving for over 10 years on the front line in a variety of colorful markings. The first of three prototype Flycatchers made its maiden flight on 28 November 1922, powered by a Jaguar II engine. Production of the Flycatcher began at Fairey’s Hayes factory in 1923, entering service with No. 402 Flight Fleet Air Arm. The Flycatcher was flown from all the British carriers of its era. Some 192 were produced. A typical deployment was on the aircraft carrier HMS Courageous, where 16 Flycatchers would serve alongside 16 Blackburn Ripons and 16 reconnaissance aircraft. The Flycatcher saw service with the Home, Mediterranean, East Indies and China fleets. During its service on the China station, the Flycatcher was active against Chinese pirates in the waters near Hong TECHNICAL DATA Length - 7,01 m, Wingspan - 8,84 m, Height - 3,66 m, Wing area - 26,80 m

  • The Royal Navy's China Station and Britain's East Asian Empire During the 1920S
Changes and challenges: The Royal Navy's China Station and Britain's East Asian empire during the 1920s Submitted by Matthew Joseph Heaslip, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Maritime History, November 2018. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… Page | 1 Abstract: Examining Britain’s position in 1920s East Asia at a point amid changes in the international balance of power, this thesis bridges the gap between the existing imperial and naval accounts of a key transition point in global history. In doing so, it focuses upon the foremost organisation involved in maintaining and supporting the peripheral regions of imperial influence, the Royal Navy’s China Station. The thesis provides an important new segment to help in explaining the wider story of the slow decline of British imperial and naval dominance in the 1920s. Foremost among the findings is an emphasis on how heavily inter-related Britain’s strategies for China and Japan were during the decade. Indeed, China was expected by the Admiralty to play a pivotal role in any future relationship between the British Empire and the increasingly expansionist Japan, which adds a significant new angle to existing discussion of Britain’s far eastern defence strategy.

Poor relations between the Royal Air Force and Army early in the war hindered the success of operations. The RAF air campaign during Operation Compass demonstrated the fundamental tenets of the formal Allied tactical air doctrine that would emerge later in the war. The central figure was Air Commodore Raymond Collishaw who directed his small force to overwhelm the Italian air force and dislocate enemy logistics to make a substantial contribution to the first major British victory of the war. Collishaw’s career prepared him well for this campaign. Known primarily as a Great War ace, he was also one of the first specialists in close air support during the Hundred Days campaign. After the war he fought campaigns in South Russia and Mesopotamia, served aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Courageous, policed riots in Palestine and deployed to Sudan during the Abyssinian crisis.

LARGE PRINT GUIDE Please return to the box for other visitors. Wings Over Water Founding partner Sopwith 2F1 Camel 1917–1921 The Sopwith 2F1, known as the Ship’s Camel, had a rear fuselage that, unlike the standard aircraft, could be detached to save space on board ships. One of the two Vickers guns of the land-based variant was omitted, and a Lewis Gun was fitted to some Camels. The 2F1 made the first ever aircraft carrier-based attack when seven aircraft took off from HMS Furious to attack Zeppelin airship sheds at the German Navy’s base at Tondern, Denmark on 17 July 1918. The Camel represented here took part in operations against Bolshevik forces in the Baltic during 1919. 72/M/582 3 Felixstowe F2A 1917–1923 F2A flying boats were able to remain airborne for over nine hours and cover vast distances. They were used to patrol the North Sea to search for enemy submarines or airships and, on a number of occasions, successfully attacking those they found. 67/M/538 Fairey Campania 1917–1920 The Campania was the first British aircraft to be designed specifically for operations from a carrier vessel. It took its name from the converted passenger liner from which it was designed to operate. 67/M/1255 4 Sopwith Cuckoo 1917–1923 The Cuckoo was the first land-based torpedo bomber operated by the RAF. Its wide wings could be folded to the rear, aiding operations from aircraft carriers. 66/M/5 Supermarine Southampton 1925–1936 The Southampton was the longest- serving flying boat between the First and Second World Wars.
