This short account of the project looks at the integrated incorporation of oral history recordings. In particular, it looks at the new approach taken to the interpretation of the museum’s Messerschmitt Me 163B-1a Komet rocket fighter. This uses oral histories from the only Allied pilot to make a powered flight in a Komet, and from a Jewish slave labourer who was forced to build aircraft for Nazi Germany. This focus on oral history, along with an approach to interpretation that emphasises social history, rather than technology, has proven popular with visitors and allowed the building of audiences. 1. INTRODUCTION Traditionally, transport museums and collections have focused on the technological history of their objects, producing Top Trump displays which look at the fastest, biggest, most mass-produced, etc. Colin Divall and Andrew Scott noted in 2001 that ‘transport museums followed some way behind other sorts of museums in dealing with social context.’ 1 These displays often include great detail about the engines and their performance, sometimes including extreme technical detail such as bore size, stroke length, etc. -

Jerome S. Fanciulli Collection History of Aviation Collection Provenance Jerome S. Fanciulli was born in New York City, January 12, 1988. He was the son of Professor Francesco and Amanda Fanciulli. He was educated at de Witt Clinton High School in New York City. He attended St. Louis University, St. Louis, 1903-04 and Stevens Institute, Hoboken, N.J., 1904-05. He married Marian Callaghan in November, 1909. On January 12, 1986 he died in Winchester Hospital in Winchester, Virginia. Mr. Fanciulli worked for the Washington Post and then joined the Associated Press where his assignments were on the Capitol staff of the Associated Press. He became the AP’s aviation specialist. Mr. Fanciulli was a charter member of the National Press Club and a founding member of the Aero Club of Washington, D.C. In November 19098, Mr. Fanciulli joined Glenn H. Curtiss’ company. He was Vice President and General Manger of the Curtiss Exhibition Company. Among his many varied duties Mr. Fanciulli established schools of aviation and directed the demonstration and sale of Curtiss aeroplanes in the United States and Europe. He promoted or conducted some of the largest air meets in the United States prior to 1913. He collaborated with the United States Army and the United States Navy in developing aeroplane specifications. Mr. Fanciulli wrote magazine articles, employed and directed aviators obtaining contracts for them. Mr. Fanciulli sold the United States Navy its first biplane and the United States Army its second biplane. He also sold czarist Russia its first plane for their Navy. These warships are primarily deployed to deter aggression and protect American strategic interests. Should deterrence fail, the carrier’s bombers and attack aircraft engage in vital operations to support other forces. The collection includes the 1940-designed Grumman TBM Avenger of World War II. Also on display is the Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a true workhorse of the 1950s and ‘60s, as well as the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and Grumman A-6 Intruder, stalwarts of the Vietnam War. Originally built as the TBF by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, they were affectionately nicknamed “Turkeys” for their somewhat ungainly appearance. US NAVY FLEET AIRCRAFT Updated 11/09/2012 The Wright Brothers, circa 1903 There is evidence that the first powered flight actually occurred at Fairfield, Connecticut on 14 August 1901. Gustave Whitehead (born Gustave A. Weisskopf in 1874), a German immigrant, was the pilot and inventor. Between 1897 and 1901, Gustave made several short flights in a series of improved aircraft. His 1901 flight in #21 traveled about a half mile before reversing course and safely returning to its starting point. A 1902 flight in #22, a seaplane, took off from Long Island Sound and travelled 7-miles before returned to its starting point. Although witnessed, without photographs his accomplishments were disputed. Thus, the Wright brother’s claim may only be the first photographed flight. On 18 January 1911, Eugene Ely (1886 -1911) successfully landed a flying machine aboard USS Pennsylvania while anchored in San Francisco Bay. The temporary flight deck consisted of a wooden platform (30’ x 120’) constructed on the stern of the armored cruiser. The deck was pitched upward 2° and sandbags attached to the arresting wires provided the deceleration necessary to stop the 40 mph flying machine. -

China has been steadily building a modern and powerful navy since the early to mid-1990s. China’s navy has become a formidable military force within China’s near-seas region, and it is conducting a growing number of operations in more-distant waters, including the broader waters of the Western Pacific, the Indian Ocean, and waters around Europe. Observers view China’s improving naval capabilities as posing a challenge in the Western Pacific to the U.S. Navy’s ability to achieve and maintain control of blue-water ocean areas in wartime— the first such challenge the U.S. Navy has faced since the end of the Cold War. More broadly, these observers view China’s naval capabilities as a key element of a broader Chinese military challenge to the long-standing status of the United States as the leading military power in the Western Pacific. China’s naval modernization effort encompasses a wide array of platform and weapon acquisition programs, including anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs), anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs), submarines, surface ships, aircraft, unmanned vehicles (UVs), and supporting C4ISR (command and control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) systems.
