    16 Textiles in defence* Richard A Scott Defence Clothing and Textiles Agency, Science and Technology Division, Flagstaff Road, Colchester, Essex CO2 7SS, UK 16.1 Introduction To be prepared for War is one of the most effectual means of preserving Peace (George Washington, 1790)1 Defence forces on land, sea, or air throughout the world are heavily reliant on tech- nical textiles of all types – whether woven, knitted, nonwoven, coated, laminated, or other composite forms. Technical textiles offer invaluable properties for military land forces in particular, who are required to move, live, survive and fight in hostile environments. They have to carry or wear all the necessities for comfort and sur- vival and thus need the most lightweight, compact, durable, and high performance personal clothing and equipment. The life-critical requirements for protecting indi- viduals from both environmental and battlefield threats have ensured that the major nations of the world expend significant resources in developing and providing the most advanced technical textiles for military use. 16.2 Historical background Military textile science is not new, and one of the earliest documented studies can probably be credited to Count Rumford, or Benjamin Thompson.     Identifying Woven Textiles 1750–1950 DATS in partnership with the V&A 1 Identifying Woven Textiles 1750–1950 This information pack has been produced to accompany two one-day workshops taught by Katy Wigley (Director, School of Textiles) and Mary Schoeser (Hon. V&A Senior Research Fellow), held at the V&A Clothworkers’ Centre on 19 April and 17 May 2018. The workshops are produced in collaboration between DATS and the V&A. White cotton was generally preferred for hot summer days. Black dyes had the terrible reputation of staining the feet. 2 - Petticoat 1889 Victorian women’s dress concealed layer upon layer of underwear. By the late 19th century this was usually made of washable, undyed cotton fabrics discreetly trimmed with ‘broderie anglaise’ and simple embroidery. Many who could afford it purchased ‘a dozen of everything’ and clothing was worn in rotation. The family wash took up to a week. The earliest form was a good tweed jacket, a hat and a pair of goggles; as the technology of aviation developed - flying faster, higher and longer - better and differing levels of protection were required. Conflict invariably brings rapid technological development and during the two World Wars, and the lingering Cold War, development of aircraft required complementary development of protective flying clothing. The later advent of electronics, computing and lightweight optics provided a new and additional role for flying clothing, particularly flying helmets, to supplement the weapons systems, primarily in the form of helmet mounted sights and displays. This paper looks briefly at the role and development of flying clothing, over the last century or so, in the protection of aircrew Introduction Over the last 100 years or so, aircrew or pilots have been the been airborne to direct aircraft operations, controlling the flight and performance, managing the aircraft systems, maintaining communications and providing, in war, much of the tactical intelligence. This approach has been highly successful and development of aircraft has been rapid, particularly during the two World Wars and the Cold War, when greater levels of finance for research, experimentation and development were available than in times of peace. There is, however, a downside to using a human in the loop.
