Here, in these pictures fr om an evening section o.fEnglish I 02, students from all over the world are reading, together, a research paper published in an earlier edition o.f the Anthology�·as a model.for writing research-based papers of their own. Th e analysis of a student-written text in this fo rmat is invaluable fo r providing direction and inspiring confidence. The Harper Anthology has served in this capacity for twenty years, now, with countless students in Harper classrooms having read the work of hundreds of other Harper students whose papers have graced these pages. Th is latest edition of the Anthology should serve well in continuing this tradition o.fguidance, as it fe atures numerous essays and papers fr om English composition courses, as well as a fe w fr om outside of the English discipline, and a number of papers from Harpers Learning Communities program. Th e richness and diversity of academic study at Harper is evident in this volume, fe aturing papers on ofi-read "ancients" such as Shakespeare and Aristotle, but also incorporating a paper about a comic book series (p. 7 I); an account of a Harper Honors Program trip to Japan (p. 9); an analysis of a novel by a Nigerian author (p. I 44); and an insightful review of Israeli-Palestinian relations (p. 76). Also, the various entries for the "Harper Students on Wr iting"feature thatfollows the Ta ble of Contents are some of the most intelligent com­ mentaries on writing that I have ever read. Th e evening class in which the cover pictures were taken experienced a process of discovery as they read and outlined another Harper students published work. I can recall the engaged group reading and discussion as being a high point of the semeste1� and the reading and writing experience developing fr om that evening resulted in a high number of questions about "the research paper" being asked and resolved. On behalf of The Harper Anthology committee, I thank all fa culty who have submitted papers to this journal in the past and who use it in their classes, and I encourage more fa culty to incorporate the reading of Anthology essays in their classes. Writing is an art form unlike any other. Ideas articulated Aside from being just good writing advice, this made me feel verbally vanish in an instant, but ideas committed to paper and empowered.     15. »Sh-Boom« Die Gesangsgruppen Martin Pfleiderer In den USA gab es bereits im 19. Jahrhundert professionelle Gesangsgrup- pen. So reisten etwa im Rahmen von Minstrelsy und Vaudeville zahlreiche singende Familiengruppen, insbesondere von Immigranten aus Deutsch- land und Österreich, durchs Land (vgl. Friedman/Gribin 2013: 3–9). Im 20. Jahrhundert veränderten sich die Traditionen des Gruppengesangs aufgrund der fortschreitenden Professionalisierung und der neuen Me- dientechnologien, aber auch aufgrund gesamtkultureller Veränderungen. Im Folgenden sollen einige der stilistischen Entwicklungen des populären Gruppengesangs in den USA zwischen 1900 und 1960 dargestellt werden. Die zentrale Fragestellung richtet sich auf die Art und Weise, wie die ver- schiedenen Gesangsstimmen einer Vokalgruppe zusammenwirken. Diese Gestaltungsweisen, ihr Auftreten in verschiedenen Musikgenres und ihre historischen Veränderungen sollen exemplarisch anhand von einflussrei- chen Aufnahmen und Vokalgruppen dargestellt werden.     Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

Two Angry Women is likely to have played at the same venue in the same year. What may these echoes tell us about the ethos and practices of the Lord Admiral’s Men, about the dramatists who wrote for them, and about the company’s place in the literary and dramatic milieu of the time? I want to argue that the presence of these echoes reveals a degree of inte- gration into urban literary fashion. And I will also suggest that some of the company’s playwrights exhibit the kind of knowing playfulness that was soon to characterize the repertory of the children’s companies and which was already shaping the satires and epigrams to reach print publication at this time.

    REVIEW: DION – BLUES WITH FRIENDS (2020) BY ANDY THORLEY JUNE 13, 2020 With no disrespect meant to Dion, it’s the “With Friends” bit of this that you almost have to start with. There’s no need to list all his mates, either. They are front and centre on the cover. Right there. And he’s got a Nobel Prize winner doing the sleeve notes too. Robert Zimmerman no less, says this about Dion: “Dion knows how to sing, and he knows just the right way to craft these songs, these blues songs…… in the end, it’s Dion by himself alone, and that masterful voice of his that will keep you returning to share these Blues songs with him.” As he so often does, there, Mr. Dylan has nailed it, because bluntly – and call me a philistine if you like – when I listen to a record, I don’t care who is playing what, I only care about the songs. On this collection those are, for the most part, top class. Dion DiMucci has had a career that many – even including some of the legends that are on this record – would be envious of. A quick scan of his discography reveals some of the all time great singles. The ones that the world and their dogs have heard of. These days Dion (like Cher) he goes by one name only, plays the blues. And this, as he explained, is his dream: “I wanted an album of songs that were strong and memorable and told stories that were worth telling.” The first one, has got Joe Bonamassa sprinkling his kind of gold dust on “Blues Coming On” and it’s a cracker.

He is a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Watercolour Society. After completing Art school in Worthing and studying at The Central School of Art and Design Holborn, he worked for several years as a graphic designer and taught at Hornsey College of Art and several other colleges. Leman started painting in 1969 and ten years later he had published his first illustrated book Comic and Curious Cats with the text by Angela Carter. His most recent book is, Martin Leman, A World of His Own.
