The Minerals Safeguarding Development Plan Document (DPD) has been through two previous consultations since 2013. This will be the last consultation before the DPD is submitted to Government for independent examination. The consultation starts at 9am 12th June 2017 and closes at 5pm on 7th August 2017. Only comments made during this period have a statutory right to be considered by the Inspector. The changes set out in the document are expressed in the conventional form of strikethrough for deletions and underlining for additions of text. Introduction Cornwall's mining history stretches back 2,000 years; its mineralogy dates from comparatively recent times. In his Alphabetum Minerale (Truro, 1682) Becher wrote that he knew of no place on earth that surpassed Cornwall in the number and variety of its minerals. Hogg's 'Manual of Mineralogy' (Truro 1825) is subtitled 'in wich [sic] is shown how much Cornwall contributes to the illustration of the science', although the manual is not exclusively based on Cornish minerals. It was Garby (TRGSC, 1848) who was the first to offer a systematic list of Cornish species, with locations in his 'Catalogue of Minerals'. Garby was followed twenty-three years later by Collins' A Handbook to the Mineralogy of Cornwall and Devon' (1871; 1892 with addenda, the latter being reprinted by Bradford Barton of Truro in 1969). Collins followed this with a supplement in 1911. (JRIC Vol. xvii, pt.2.). Finally the torch was taken up by Robson in 1944 in the form of his 'Cornish Mineral Index' (TRGSC Vol. xvii), his amendments and additions were published in the same Transactions in 1952. All these sources are well known, but the next to appear is regrettably much less so. it would never the less be only just to mention Purser's 'Minerals and locations in S.W.

The site lies within Area 3 of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site but not close to any other designated heritage assets. The key issue in terms of historic environment planning policies is therefore identified as the effects of the proposed development on the significance (Outstanding Universal Value in UNESCO parlance) of the World Heritage Site – lying in the degree to which it helps to illustrate the distinctive mining landscapes of the period 1700-1914. The site lay historically within a common grazing area known as Perran Downs. A record on the Tithe Award suggests ‘burrows destroyed by mining’ lay to the immediate east of the site.

Despite constant digging and almost continuous activity in this region for the greater part of the year the results were somewhat disappointing. There was also however continuing activity in other parts of N.Wales particularly in the Minera area, although access difficulties severely limited visits to Ogof Dydd Byraf. A study of local canal tunnels proved quite interesting and different from the normal run of caving trips, as also was an investigation into some so called “secret” passages under a Denbighshire gentleman’s residence.

King The catalogue is organised geographically commencing with British material and ranges across the world in the standard geographical format. The British material is grouped under two main headjngs: Cornubia; and the Rest of Britain. Cornubian specimens are grouped under the geographical headings (i-xii) used by Dines (1956). Localities falling outside those boundaries appear within the area geographically nearest to them. The mines andlor localities in every case are entered alphabetically. Nearby place names have been used as points of reference. Where possible, modern geographical nomenclature has been used. In some cases, however, where it has not been possible to locate small localities on modern maps, the 'given' nomenclature has been retained, and it should be borne in mind that these may contain errors resulting from the imperfect interpretation of handwriting on old labels. Each item in the catalogue bears the specimen's accession number within the King Collection; the date of collection from the field where known; a short description of the specimen's physical features where of value; and bibliographic data where of use and where available. Any controversy concerning the species identification or locality is entered. Much of the material listed is from the Harwood (Deganwy) Bequest. Each item from the latter bears the letter H. The sources of much of the Hatwood material are unknown but letters exist in the author's files indicating that Harwood acquired much, if not all, of the Saxon and the Bohemian material by exchange with the Narodni Museum of Natural History in Prague.
