2017 FB Week 3 Notes.indd 4 9/13/2017 5:16:16 PM SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 3 5 SWAC PLAYERS ON PRESEASON AWARD WATCH LISTS STATS FCS Walter Payton Watch List SWAC lands two on STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team (STATS) – Two players from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) were selected to the STATS QB Devante Kincade - Grambling State Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Preseason All-American Third Team on Monday with Jackson State defensive lineman Keontre Anderson and Southern defensive back Danny Johnson receiving top recognition for the conference.

97 players were chosen from all 13 FCS conferences with 55 schools represented.

Anderson, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior, had 55 tackles (31 solo), nine sacks (tied for second in the SWAC), six hurries and was the leader in the nation in tackles for a loss with a whopping 25.5 to account for 107 yards lost from opposing offenses.

Earlier this month, Anderson was also named the All-SWAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year as well as to the All-SWAC First Team.

Johnson, the 5-foot-10, 195-pound senior, had 57 tackles (43 solo) with the second most passes defend- ed with 16 (nine pass break ups and a nation-best seven interceptions with one returned for a touch- down). Additionally, Johnson also made the All-SWAC Preseason First Team as a defensive back.

STATS FCS Walter Payton Award Watch List (STATS) – Many talented players adorn the preseason watch list for the 2017 STATS Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Walter Payton Award, announced on Wednesday.

Even more precise, many familiar names.

Eighteen of the 22 players were nominees for the outstanding offensive player of the year in the FCS last season, including 14 finalists.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) will be represented once again this season as Grambling State redshirt senior DeVante Kin- cade was named to the Payton Watch List.

The quarterback is off the heels of a season in which the choice for the SWAC’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year completed 219-of-342 passes for 2,999 yards with 31 touchdowns against just four interceptions.

The Payton Award, first handed out in 1987, has had past winners such as Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, John Friesz, Brian Finneran, Jimmy Garoppolo and Cooper Kupp move on to the NFL.

The watch list will have updates during the season. A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcast- ers, writers and other dignitaries will vote on 25 finalists following the regular season.

The breakdown of the watch list by position: 10 quarterbacks, five wide receivers, four running backs, one fullback, one tight end and one offensive tackle.

Also this season, STATS will present the Buck Buchanan Award (FCS defensive player of the year), Jerry Rice Award (FCS freshman of the year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS coach of the year) and Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year. STATS will hold its national awards banquet the night of Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the FCS national championship game.
