The Academy of the Annunciation began here at the end of last year when Bishop Philip came to the Oratory to celebrate the Diocesan Mass of Thanksgiving for the Canonization of our Oratorian Cardinal, Saint John Henry Newman. The Advent Study Day was enthusiastically received by a mixture of Bournemouth Parishioners and students from other dioceses. As we enter upon the Academy’s first year, you are invited to come on a course - outlined overleaf - take some brochures from the back of Church to promote among your friends, visit the website, and meet our now resident Doctors of ! Theology after Sunday Mass over coffee and cake. Visit: www.aoa-edu-com THE GOD WHO SPEAKS ~ YEAR OF THE WORD: The Academy’s first year topics respond particularly to the Bishops of England & Wales dedicating this year to Sacred Scripture, and in 2021 will focus on Bishop Philip’s follow-on initiative of a Year of the Eucharist. THE REDEDICATION OF ENGLAND AS THE DOWRY OF MARY, announced on 1st January 2020 (Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God), by the Catholic Bishops of England & Wales, invites us all to rejoice in our Catholic history. Pope Leo XIII said: “When England comes back to Walsingham, then Our Lady will come back to England.” Our Academy of the Annunciation is under the patronage of Our Lady of Walsingham (“England’s Nazareth” and our National Marian Shrine) to which we are arranging a pilgrimage later this year for our Parish and the Academy. Meanwhile, on the Friday before Ash Wednesday (21st February) all Catholics are invited to begin a personal 33 day consecration to Jesus through Mary and go to Confession during Lent. On 25th March, Solemnity of the Annunciation, all who are following the consecration will consecrate themselves to Jesus through Mary on this day. From Thursday 26 to Saturday 28 March a triduum of prayer will invite everyone to pray the Rosary and go to Confession in preparation for Sunday 29 March when the personal rededication of England as the Dowry of Mary takes place at Walsingham, in every Catholic Cathedral, every parish, and in as many homes as possible. We are meanwhile encouraged to prepare spiritually for the rededication by praying the Angelus daily before or after our parish Masses (as we already do at the Oratory) and personally during each day - early morning, noon, and six o’clock each evening.     St. Luigi Scrosoppi of Udine Catholic.net Youngest of three brothers born to Domenico Scrosoppi, a jeweler, and Antonia Lazzarini; his brother Carlo was ordained when Luigi was six, and his brother Giovanni several years later. When Luigi was 11 or 12 years old, his home region was struck by drought, famine, typhus, and smallpox in quick succession; the sight of such misery, complete poverty, and the number of orphans had a lasting effect on the boy. In his teens, Luigi felt a call to the priesthood, and he entered the same seminary as his brother Giovanni. Deacon in 1826; ordained on March 31, 1827 at the cathedral in Udine; he was assisted at his first Mass by his brothers. Director of the Pious Union of the Heart of Jesus Christ. Helped manage the children‘s center run by his brother Carlo. Franciscan tertiary. Assistant director of Carlo’s orphanage in 1829. The orphanage fell on harder times than usual; Luigi, in desperation, hit the streets to beg for their support, and the school soon had a great lesson in faith – and enough money to buy their building. As there were more orphans than space, the brothers decided to enlarge the house; Luigi went through the countryside to beg building materials and labor. Work began in 1834 with Luigi coordinating, begging, supervising, and working construction; it was completed in 1836, and named the House for the Destitute. That year also saw another cholera epidemic, and the orphanages, again, were full. The need of the orphans, and the constant work of the brother priests, attracted the attention of several area women who were also working with the poor and the abandoned.

Carl and Paula Koch 2 Letter From The Executive Director The Holy Father has called for a Year of Faith from 11 October 2012 until 24 November 2013, the Solemnity of Christ the King. This Year of Faith coincides with two important anniversaries of our Church: the 50th anniversary of the opening of Vatican Council II, called by Blessed Pope John XXIII on 11 October 1962 and the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church by Blessed Pope John Paul II on 11 October 1992. Pope Benedict XVI encourages each of us to familiarize ourselves with some of the basic documents that followed the council. He suggests we begin with Gaudium Et Spec and include some of the encyclicals of John Paul II, such as Laboren Exercents and Sollicitude Rei Socialis. Participation in these components of the Year of Faith will provide us, as Disciples of Christ, with the means to enhance our understanding of the foundations of our faith. Becoming familiar with the Catechism of the Catholic Church during the Year of Faith will lead us naturally to be more effective witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Roach of St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minn., said at the Catholic Theological Society of America’s annual convention in Milwaukee. In a major address to the convention, the archbishop described the various voices that a bishop must listen to — some of them strident, some angry and bitter, some learned, some flowing out of deep pain. First is the voice of God through Scripture and tradition, “ a continual source for prayer and preaching and decision-making for a bishop,” said Archbishop Roach, vice president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. “ The Holy Spirit, who inspired the sacred writers, is continually at work in the faithful transmission of the word of God.” A big and constant danger, he said, is that the bishop will not be quiet enough to hear the small voices, the muted ones, through which God has spoken often through the centuries. These people need to be heard and sometimes even prompted to speak — the poor, oppressed, unborn, aged, parents, those in pain, and even those of little faith. Another important voice is that of theologians and philosophers. “ A bishop would be a fool not to turn to his body of theologians regularly,” he said, “ since he rarely has time to pursue in depth their varied voices.” .

They join Crescencio Sepe, Cardinal Archbishop of Naples and the appointed members of the Ecclesial court for the Cause of the Saint to participate in the opening of the investigative process into a Postulator General, Sr. Nicla Spezzati, ASC, presents the case for the miracle to Cardinal miracle that we believed occurred through the Sepe and the Ecclesial Court. intercession of Venerable John Merlini. The investigation is a requirement for the Beatification process of Venerable John Merlini. The alleged miraculous healing of Mr. Ciriaco Cefalo occurred in February of 2015 in a Naples hospital.     Riflessione sulla spiritualità di S. Luigi Scrosoppi in occasione del II Centenario della nascita (1804-2004) [ Italiano - Español - English ] 1. “Padre Luigi entra nella Congregazione dell’Oratorio e ne fa un dinamico centro di irradiazione di vita spirituale” rilevava il Santo Padre nell’omelia della beatificazione, il 4 ottobre 1981. La scelta dell’Oratorio, a leggere nella vita di Padre Luigi il riferimento agli anni della sua infanzia ed ai primi anni del sacerdozio, non risulta sorprendente. Se “quasi natus”, come dicono da sempre le Costituzioni oratoriane, è la condizione di chi è chiamato all’Oratorio, Luigi Scrosoppi si presenta con le migliori credenziali. Egli conobbe la “scuola” di Padre Filippo fin dall’infanzia; si può dire che crebbe alla “scuola” di San Filippo. Il fratello P. Carlo, nato dal primo matrimonio della madre e di quattordici anni maggiore di Luigi, era stato costretto a ritirarsi in famiglia a causa della soppressione della Congregazione dell’Oratorio in cui era entrato nel 1809 con un vero atto di coraggio, dal momento che sull’Oratorio di Udine la bufera già si addensava: Napoleone Bonaparte si era annesso nel 1805 il Friuli ed era iniziata, anche in queste terre, la nefasta opera di smantellamento delle Comunità religiose. Al maturare della vocazione oratoriana giovò profondamente a Luigi il contatto con il fratello, apprezzato confessore e maestro di spirito, a cui egli guardò per tutta la vita con rispetto riverenziale; e giovò pure la frequentazione assidua della chiesa di S. Maddalena, vero centro di fervida spiritualità, in cui i Padri, pur costretti a vivere senza la propria Comunità, continuarono a svolgere l’attività pastorale.

    THE BOURNEMOUTH ORATORY in Formation Sacred Heart, Bournemouth & University Catholic Chaplaincy served by the Fathers and Brothers of the Oratorian Community of Saint Philip Neri ______________________________________________________ Monthly Newsletter ~ JANUARY 2018 ______________________________________________________ Dear Friends, ORATORIANS LAUNCH INITIAL 3 YEAR PLAN of Renewal, Rededication and Mission The start of a New Year gives us all an opportunity for a new start and, after these past seven months since our arrival on 31st May, it is time to move forward with an initial three year programme (followed by strategic development plans for future five year periods) so that we have direction, purpose and structure for the future of the Oratory, the Parish, and our mission here. 2018 will be our Parish Year of Renewal, 2019 a Year of Rededication, and 2020 a Year of Mission. This three year initial programme is designed to build on Bishop Philip’s vision for our Diocese of Bringing People to Jesus through His Church, incorporates his four priorities (mission / evangelization, converting Catholics, trust in God, and looking outwards), and draws on his Christmas gift book “Rediscover Jesus”, to renew our relationship with Jesus and His Church. The Fathers and Brothers of the Oratory are immensely appreciative of the warm welcome which we have received, and the positive and cooperative attitude of so many at Sacred Heart. The recent Parish Census indicators of increased participation, and increased giving in response to ‘Stewardship Sunday’ bode well for the future. While there’s still some way to go to meet the day-to-day expenditure, the separate Parish Development Fund (‘extra money for extra things') enables projects to proceed to enhance the church, for example, with Phase 2 of our restored main entrance on Richmond Hill (which completes the recent disabled-ramp access and new signage) with interior air-lock glass doors to keep the cold out! The organ restoration should be completed early in the New Year.
