3 ON THIS 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, Jesus tells Martha in today’s that she does not have her priorities in order and thus He challenges her – and each of us – to get our priorities straight. She was so busy she did not have time to listen and learn from Jesus: “Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so many things and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part and it shall not be taken from her” (Luke 10:41-42). And so, like Martha, we are challenged by Christ to get our priorities in order, fi rst things fi rst, and God comes fi rst of all. Getting our priorities in order means making time for Jesus, His word and His sacraments, time for God, time for the Blessed Virgin Mary, time for prayer and contemplation. On another occasion Jesus said, “Seek the kingdom of God fi rst and all these other things will be given you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) So let us put God fi rst. St. John in his fi rst letter reminds us also of the glorious future ahead of us: “we are already children of God but what we are to be in the future has not yet been revealed; all we know is that when it is revealed we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is” (1 :2). We need to remember every day that each of us are God’s beloved children, that God has a plan for us, that God has established a covenantal relationship with us, and that by following His will, each of us can have a glorious future. Consequently if we don’t have time for God, we are like a train that has derailed, and a train that has derailed goes nowhere. In fact, if we don’t make space for God we will fi nd ourselves to be unhappy and we will try to fi ll that unhappiness with all sorts of things and pleasures that will never fi ll that void, because only God can fi ll the deep longing of our hearts. Saint Augustine expressed it beautifully when he wrote, “You have made us for yourself O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” And so, each of us needs to make time to rest in God, and rest in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, converse with Him, learn from Him, so that we fi nd life “through Him, with Him and in Him.” How do we achieve this? In many ways, actually, but it should always begin with prayer – communication with God and His Son Jesus Christ. This is one of the reasons that I do the lecTio diVina that is included each week in the bulletin. You ought to try lectio every day, even if it is only one single verse of the daily Gospel, because, “It is not on bread alone that man lives but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). When we read the word of God the word speaks to us; when we pray, we speak to the word and so turn our prayer into conversation. And so, through the practice of lectio divina we not only rest in the arms of our Lord, we also fi nd life-giving direction as God’s children and as brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. Pope Saint John Paul II once wrote: “It is especially necessary that listening to the word of God should become a life-giving encounter, in the ancient and ever valid tradition of lectio divina, which draws from the biblical text the living Word which questions, directs, and shapes our lives” (John Paul II, Novo Millennio Ineute, n. 39). The LECTIO DIVINA in our bulletin takes approximately 10-15 minutes each day, and so it is a beginning – something for the beginning of each day, perhaps – but it is also the beginning of learning what God reveals to us through Sacred Scripture, and perhaps the beginning of a desire to read and learn more from scripture, and to meditate, pray and contemplate about what God is revealing to us through scripture. Also, praying before the Blessed Sacrament during a Holy Hour is most spiritually rewarding – we off er two Holy Hours at the Cathedral: Wednesday, following the 5:15 p.m. Mass, and Thursday, from 10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m., prior to the 12:05 p.m. Mass; Confessions are heard during both holy hours. If each of us are available – and if we adjust our time schedules and priorities we can become free – it is benefi cial to attenddaily Mass. It is good to see many people coming to Mass here every day. Many people also listen to Saint Catholic Radio (AM820) or or hymn CDs when they are driving; what a diff erence this makes versus listening to popular music or talk radio. Priests and religious go on retreat every year, spending some days with the Lord. In recent years, I have noticed and increasing number of lay people also going on retreat or on pilgrimages. When you plan a vacation or weekend away consider going on a journey with the Lord by going on a life-giving retreat or pilgrimage. May I suggest the Abbey of Gethsemani, just a four-hour drive south of Columbus; go to www.monks.org for information on the Abbey and to schedule a retreat. Remember, Jesus came so that we would look beyond the present life to eternal life and prepare ourselves here for eternal life with God. “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her” (Luke 10:41-42). With so many loud voices barking these days, take a step back, pause, and listen to the word of the Lord for guidance and comfort. YOU WILL BE PLEASED TO KNOW that Bishop Brennan has appointed Father Bob Kitsmiller to serve as the next Rector of Saint Joseph Cathedral. Father Bob has been in residence here at the Cathedral for the past three years while serving as Judicial Vicar for the Diocese, and serving as Administrator of nearby Saint John the Baptist and Sacred Heart parishes. Father Bob regularly celebrates daily Masses here, and many Sunday Masses – although his primary Sunday duties were at his two parishes. Father Bob and I were in seminary together at the Josephinum and were ordained together on June 26, 2004. He did his undergraduate studies at Xavier University, and he is a Cincinnati Reds fan, but please don’t hold that against him! (A little Cleveland–Cincinnati rivalry there!) Father Bob is a good friend, a rock- solid priest, a hard worker, a very pastoral priest, an excellent Canon lawyer, and just a good guy – it is indeed fortunate that he will be the next Cathedral Rector. Father Bob’s offi cial start date is August 5; my last offi cial day here is August 4. I hope you don’t mind but I declined a very generous off er for a farewell reception and asked not to make a big tadoo. I truly appreciate the gesture but I always prefer the simple, so I believe we’re going to have a nice ice cream social after the 10:30 a.m. Mass on August 4. Hope to see you there!

Mary’s Contemplative Life owever, the life of prayer or the life of contemplation has a supremely important role. t was precisely this that Jesus is trying to teach the world through the incident in ethany and the tension that eisted between Martha and Mary—two very good and holy sisters, but very different in temperament and character. n fact Mary symbolies all the different gestures we should strive to implement so as to live out a more contemplative lifestyle. Let us reflect upon the contemplative gestures of Mary:

Mary was simply sitting loving at the feet of Jesus. ontemplative souls long to sit and to be with Jesus for long periods of time  b ML J. et, Mary simply gaed into the ace and eyes of the Lord Jesus. he salmist epresses this: “Look to the Lord and be radiant with joy.”  c L J. hile sitting in front of Mary we can certainly imagine Jesus speaking to Mary. ry to imagine the way Jesus spoke, the tone of is voice as well as the content of is message. ndeed there is much food for thought  d J. t was not a monologue but a dialogue that must have been carried on between Jesus and Mary in ethany. his is the essence of prayer to listen and to speak to Jesus—a great definition of prayer  e owever, the essence of this encounter between Mary and Jesus in the home of ethany was love. Mary loved Jesus totally and Jesus in turn loved Mary as well as Martha and Laarus.  f he net result of this loving encounter was a dynamic and growing friendship between Mary and Jesus.

y orry ne of the reasons why we fall into the trap of being “Worrywarts” and end up by making others worry too emember, worrying can be contagious is that we can easily neglect the contemplative dimension in our lives. e can easily fall into activism. e can fall into the proverbial modern malady that we call the workaholic. e can fall into Marthaism—a new word that have created related to this topic herefore, when you find yourself nervous, tense, emotionally drained, frenetically moving from one activity to the net, like a robot—in a word, you are all stressed out and really bent out of shape, you will know the reason why ou have become too much Martha and not enough Mary. grace to pray for: eg the lessed irgin Mary for the grace to strike a harmonious blend between the Martha and the Mary in your life, the harmonious integration of a deep prayer life and ealous active life of fraternal charity. May ur Lady the contemplative in the nnunciation and ur Lady actively serving t. liabeth help us to strike the harmonious balance between deep prayer and apostolic eal

8 The Saints...

o eally as Mary Maalene Feast Day: July 22 by Father William Saunders

ontroversy over the identity of t. Mary Magdalene has continued since the early hurch. In the ospels there are three particular characters involved in the controversy: Mary Magdalene a follower of our Lord (n 2:111; the anonymous penitent woman (Lk :35; and Mary of ethany the sister of Martha and Laarus (Lk 1:32. In the West particularly since the time of ope t. regory the reat the three characters have all been identified as t. Mary Magdalene. owever in the ast the three characters have remained separate with t. Mary Magdalene and t. Mary of ethany having separate feast days. t. mbrose t. erome t. ugustine t. lbert the reat and t. homas uinas all refrained from making a final decision. o why would ope t. regory fuse the three characters together irst we need to eamine the specific references to the woman named Mary Magdalene recorded in the ospels. he was one of the women who accompanied esus and the postles: he welve accompanied im and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and maladies: Mary called the Magdalene from whom seven devils had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, , and many others who were assisting them out of their means (Lk :13. (he ospel of t. Mark confirms that our Lord had epelled seven demons from Mary Magdalene (1:. Mary Magdalene also stood at the foot of the cross during the crucifiion (confer Mk 15: Mt 2:5 and n 1:25. he also witnessed Christ’s burial, and on was the first to discover the and then the first to see the risen Lord (confer n 2:11. iven the specific references to Mary Magdalene the second step is to eamine whether Mary Magdalene may also be the penitent woman found in the ospel of t. Luke (:35. emember the penitent woman entered the home of imon the harisee. he wept and her tears fell upon our Lord’s feet. She anointed His feet with perfumed oil and dried them with her hair. Simon the harisee said to himself If this man were a prophet e would know who and what sort of woman this is that touches im — that she is a sinner an obvious reference to her being untouchable because of such a serious sin as adultery fornication or promiscuity. In the end esus forgives the penitent woman. This scene is part of Jesus’ ministry in the area of the Sea of . Also, right after the declaration of forgiveness in the seventh chapter of the ospel of t. Luke Mary Magdalene is mentioned by name as a follower of esus and identified as the one from whom seven devils had gone out (Lk :13. eep in mind that Magdalene is derived from . Magdala located along the ea of alilee near iberias was a wealthy city known for its prosperous fisheries. he omans destroyed the town because of its moral depravity and its participation in the ewish revolt. Interestingly, in the Talmud, from the word Magdalene is derived the expression "curling women’s hair which means adulteress. ven though the penitent woman of Luke is not specifically identified as the Mary Magdalene from whom seven devils had gone out of Luke one could easily draw the conclusion as did ope t. regory. Moreover the early hurch tradition has also upheld this connection. he third and more difficult step to the investigation is to see if Mary Magdalene could indeed be Mary of ethany. ollowing Luke the gospel in the th and 1th chapters relates such stories as the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves the ransfiguration the eorcism of a possessed boy and teachings about discipleship. ur Lord then traveled to a village (i.e. ethany although not specified by Luke to the home of Martha who had a sister named Mary (confer Lk 1:32. here Martha prepared a meal for our Lord. While the ospel of t. Luke does not specifically identify Mary Magdalene with Mary of ethany the ospel of t. ohn helps resolve the issue. In ohn 12:111 esus arrived at ethany the village of Laarus whom esus had raised from the dead. Martha served a meal. Mary anointed our Lord’s feet with perfume and dried his feet with her hair. Keep in mind this is a different scene than the anointing by the penitent woman in the home of imon the harisee in Luke ;

9 nevertheless, the same ind of action in both scenes helps suggests the same actor, namely Mary Magdalene. Moreover, in John , the earlier scene where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, the Gospel reads, "There was a certain man named Lazarus who was sic. He was from ethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. This Mary whose brother Lazarus was sic was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and dried His feet with her hair" Jn . Here Mary is identified as "the one who anointed the Lord." hile some speculate that this identification in John refers to the subseuent anointing in John , why would John need to mae such a reference when the story of John flows right into the story of John More liely, the identification refers to a previous action, namely the story at the home of Simon the harisee. If this argument holds, then Mary Magdalene, the penitent woman, and Mary of ethany are the same. Granted, we are still left with a little mystery. evertheless, I personally agree with ope St. Gregory, who concluded, "She whom Lue calls the sinful woman, whom John calls Mary of ethany, we believe to be the Mary from whom seven devils were eected according to Mar" Homilies on the . St. Mary Magdalene, the repentant sinner, who found both forgiveness and friendship with our Lord, who stood faithfully at the foot of the cross, and who first saw the risen Lord, is a powerful example for each believer. As far as The Da Vinci Code is concerned, what one cannot construe is some of the misconceptions they erroneously present for instance, that Mary Magdalene was the wife of Jesus, the mother of Jesus’ child, a participant at the Last Supper, His prophetic successor and a priestess. Such conclusions, despite the best efforts of historical revisionists who distort the Gospel to meet their political obectives, have no foundation in sacred Scripture, sacred tradition or factual history. hile the revisionists cite the "gnostic gospels," these were reected from the official canon of sacred Scripture because they laced apostolic authorship, were heretical and contained fictitious stories. ne cannot counter Church tradition with spurious evidence from the gnostic gospels. Lastly, the boo cites several individuals who have accused the Church of "a smear campaign" to discredit Mary Magdalene so as to disempower a powerful woman. h please hat greater honor could the Church grant than by recognizing Mary Magdalene as a saint and a model for every sincere Christian who struggles for holiness? Pope St. Gregory realized Mary Magdalene’s beautiful example: a woman who found new life in Christ, not a woman who found a selfempowered political agenda. ranly, more people ought to spend their time reading the ible, the fathers of the Church and the Catechism instead of such bogus print as The Da Vinci Code.

Anointing of the Sick By Fr. William Saunders

ES ecently, when was in the hospital, a lady came to give me the nointing o the Sic She said she was sanctioned y the ealing inistry o my parish to do this hen a priest came to anoint me, told him that had een anointed y a lady rom my parish e said that lay people cannot anoint, nor can deacons, so did not receive the Sacrament my irst anointing was not a sacrament, why does my parish have “healing ministers”?

Extreme Unction only cannot Catechism of the Catholic Church “ Anointing of the Sick” Code of Canon Law “ sters the Anointing of the Sick” “anointing of the sick” — “God has visited His people” “ with oil, and worked many cures” “ cover” “ wers” “ y sins, forgiveness will be his” all, the Church has been continually mindful of our Lord’s command, “Heal the sick” (The Council of Trent cited these passages to refute the charges of the Protestant leaders that Christ had not instituted this sacrament and had not conferred His healing ministry to priests.) “Do ” “ ” or “hospital chaplain”

13 important sacrament of healing, when in fact they have not. A person’s soul could be in jeopardy because of some symbolic anointing that does nothing e must be very careful never to do anything that simulates a sacrament hen a loved one is seriously ill or near death, please call for a Catholic priest who alone can administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, which provides great graces for healing both body and soul

16 a skillul artist, esus painted eoatie pitures with short and simple words. As busy as we are in this day and age, we still need to are out an ample amount o time to listen to the truths o hrist in the gospels, and to learn rom him. his is an eellent start to aring out time to learn the truths of scripture, to think about them, meditate upon them, in order to apply the teachings in one’s daily liing to be a “doer of the word, not a hearer only” (James 1:22).

he mother o the sons o ebedee approahed esus with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him or something. He said to her, “What do you wish?” She answered him, “Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your let, in your Kingdom.” esus said in reply, “You do not know what you are asking. an you drink the halie that going to drink?” They said to him, “We can.” He replied, “My chalice you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my let, this is not mine to gie but is or those or whom it has been prepared by my Father.” When the ten heard this, they beame indignant at the two brothers. ut esus summoned them and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority oer them elt. ut it shall not be so among you. ather, whoeer wishes to be great among you shall be your serant whoeer wishes to be irst among you shall be your slae. ust so, the Son o an did not ome to be sered but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

here are many who seek plaes o honor, position, and prestige. any seem to hae an unuenhable thirst or ame and reognition, to seek the limelight and be the enter o attention, to hae their oie or opinion heard through a web site or eample. Should we be surprised to see some o the disiples o esus thirsting or power, authority, and position? ames and ohn, the sons o ebedee, urged their mother to strike a deal with esus, their aster. hey wanted the distintion o being in the highest position o authority and power, net to esus, o ourse When esus alled the twele apostles to be his inner irle o disiples who would rule on his behal, he did the unthinkable He taught ontrary to their understanding o power and position, by reersing the order o master and serant, lord and subet, irst and last

Almighty eerliing od, who onserated the irst ruits o your Apostles by the blood o Saint ames, grant, we pray, that your hurh may be strengthened by his onession o aith and onstantly sustained by his protetion. hrough our ord esus hrist, your Son, who lies and reigns with you in the unity o the Holy Spirit, one od, or eer and eer. Amen.

What kind o up does the ord hae in mind or us? or some suh a up entails physial suering and the painul struggle o martyrdom. ut or many, it entails the long routine o the hristian lie, with all its daily sariies, disappointments, setbaks, hallenges, struggles, and temptations. As disiples we must always be ready to lay down our lies in martyrdom or the sake o the gospel and be ready to lay it down eah and eery day in the little and big sariies reuired. What makes suh sariie a oy rather than a burden? t is loe — the kind o loe whih od has poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit whih has been gien to us re. omans . An early hurh ather summed up esus teahing with the epression to sere is to reign with hrist. We share in ods reign by laying down our lies in humble serie and loe or one another, ust as esus did or our sake. Are you ready to lay down your lie and to sere others as esus has taught and modeled or us?

n Spain, he is alled l Seor Santiago, the o horsemen and soldiers, and his great shrine at Santiago de ompostela in that ountry has been a plae o pilgrimage or enturies. He is one o those that esus alled oanerges, “son o thunder,” the brother o ohn the angelist and the son o ebedee the isherman rom alilee. St. ames the reater and his brother ohn were apparently partners with those other two brothers, eter and Andrew, and lied in ethsaida, on the north shore o the Sea o alilee. How and where ames irst met esus, we do not know but there is an old legend that makes , his mother, a sister o ary, and i this were the ase, he would hae known esus rom hildhood. Along with eter and his brother ohn, ames was part o the inner irle o esus, who witnessed the ransiguration, were witnesses to ertain o His mirales, like the raising o the daughter o airus, and aompanied Him to the arden o ethsemani. ike his brother, he was atie in the work o eangeliation ater the death o esus, and one legend, ery unlikely, een has him going to Spain ater esus resurretion. His prominene and his presene in erusalem must hae been well known, or sarely a doen years ater the esurretion, he beame inoled in the politial maneuerings o the day and was arrested and eeuted by ing . his was ollowed by the arrest o eter also, so his death must hae been part o a purge o hristian leaders by Agrippa, who saw the new hristian moement as a threat to udaism. esus had oretold this kind o ate when He

17 prophesied that James and his brother John would drink of the same chalice of suffering as imself. The two brothers had asked to be seated at the right of Jesus and at is left in is kingdom, and Jesus told them that they would be with im in a far different way than they epected. Jamess death is the only biblical record we have of the death of one of the postles, and he was the first of that chosen band to give his life for his Master.

Jesus said to his disciples: “Hear the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom without understanding it, and the vil ne comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with oy. ut he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly aniety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. ut the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sity or thirtyfold.”

This parable of Jesus is a warning to those who hear and who preach the word of God. What makes us ineffective and unresponsive to Gods word? reoccupation with other things can distract us from what is truly important and worthwhile. nd letting our hearts and minds be consumed with material things can easily weigh us down and draw us away from the treasure that lasts for eternity. Gods word can only take root in a receptive heart which is docile and ready to hear what God has to say. ne lesson is uite clear: the harvest is sure. While some seed will fall by the wayside and some fall on shallow ground and never come to maturity, and some be choked to death by the thorns nonetheless a harvest will come. The seed that falls on good soil, on the heart that is receptive, will reap abundant fruit.

ord, God of our Fathers, who bestowed on aints Joachim and nne this grace, that of them should be born the Mother of your incarnate on, grant, through the prayers of both, that we may attain the salvation you have promised to your people. Through our ord Jesus Christ, your on, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the oly pirit, one God, for ever and ever. men.

To respond to this parable, we need to look at the story as if we are the seed. Many who hear the Gospel never seem to “get it.” The message is forgotten before it ever takes root. tatistically, of all Catholic youth who receive the sacraments disappear somewhere between age 1 and . hallow roots fail to euip them to take the heat of our secular culture. Then there are the of lifelong, regular churchgoers who, according to a Gallup oll, embrace the values and lifestyles identical to those of their secular neighbors, devoid of anything rooted in the laws of God or the teachings of Jesus Christ. Their Catholic faith has been neutralied by poor theology, poor catechesis, and a focus on worldliness. Then there are those who stay away from serious sin, manage to do some good for some people, but all in all produce a mediocre harvest. Finally there are those who are not satisfied with ust getting by. They sink their roots deep into the truths of cripture, tradition, prayer and the sacraments, and as a result produce a bumper crop. o, what kind of seed are you?

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 21, 2019

The focus of today’s visit by Jesus to the home of Martha and Mary is on many other issues and items usually. Nevertheless, as is always the case in Holy Scripture, there is a stewardship message for us here. We could cite hospitality as both Martha and Mary in their own ways welcome Jesus and make Him at ease. The fi rst and main message for us is that the Lord was welcomed into their home. Each of us is a potential home for Jesus. Do we welcome Him? Or are we too busy with our own pursuits, our own distractions, to fi nd a time each day to welcome the Lord into our homes, our very being? There are so many people who cannot seem to fi nd time for the Lord. They are so busy that Jesus never even gets into their houses. Rather than debate whether Martha or Mary do the right thing, we should fi rst make sure that our Savior is welcomed into our hearts each and every day. (www.thecatholicsteward.com)

YOUR OFFERTORY IS A GIFT TO GOD: If your Off ertory is not made electronically, please use your parish Off ertory envelope to thoughtfully, prayerfully choose your gift and present it eagerly to Our Lord. Using our electronic giving or envelope system makes our job easier and allows us to honestly say, “Yes! This family is registered and actively participating here in our parish!” YOUR OFFERING TO GOD ~ THANK YOU!

“Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor... Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.” ~ Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)
