Experiences in Conservating and Archiving of the Musical Heritage In Experiences of University Institutions in the rescue of the heritage in Uruguay By Yoanna Lizett Diaz Vázquez (*) (*) Member of the Research Center in Musical and Performing Arts of the Salto Headquarters, University of the Republic (Udelar), Uruguay 1.- Introduction Reflections from access and collaboration with Documentation Centers and Music Archives linked to the University of the Republic of Uruguay, through the Research Group of the Department of Musicology (GIDMUS) of the University School of Music (EUM) of Uruguay and the Center for Research in Musical and Performing Arts of the Northwest Coast, in the rescue of the musical heritage of Uruguay. Projects developed along with the cooperation of public and private institutions in Uruguay, and international collaboration. In Uruguay, for several years there were difficulties in accessing the public archives by researchers in music; these "had to face several problems: difficulties for a fluid access, the state of preservation of the documents, the absence of guides, catalogs or even listed non systematic. Neither was there, in most public institutions, competent personnel for the treatment of materials in various supports. By the end of the 20th century, almost all of the country's public collections were in serious deterioration, with very few possibilities for access, much less professional management of documents1. 2.- GIDMUS and CIAMEN collaboration projects for rescuting the Urguayan Musical heritage 2.1.- Center of Documentation, Research and Dissemination of the Performing Arts (CIDDAE as Spanish acronym) CIDDAE was created in 2004 just when the Solís' Theater in Montevideo was reopened. The center is located at Theatre's building, and it contains documents produced by the Theater along time and obtained from private donations. The General Archive of the Solís' Teatro has: Hand Programs Posters Handwritten and Printed Scores Pictures Books of proceedings of the Board of Directors Bordereaux Sketches Press articles Scenic models 1 Fornaro, M. Part of the digitized collection is now available at URL: http://teatrosolis.org.uy/uc_647_1.html Since November 2004, a collaboration between CIDDAE and the Musicology Department of the EUM takes place. Three projects2 have been implemented together with the Solís' Theater as an associated institution. They are found at various stages of development: • 2005 - 2006: "The Archives of the Teatro Solis de Montevideo: an intervention from musicology and archivology"3. • 2007 - 2008: "The Solis Theater in the Uruguayan sociocultural framework"4. • 2009 to date: R & D project "Popular music in the Solís' Theater of the cupleteras and the carnival dances to the Uruguayan Popular Song"5. Results: • An Entertainment Programs Fund was created, suitable to initiate the elaboration of data bases and the analysis of the activity of the Institution. (Http://teatrosolis.org.uy/uc_647_1.html) • Organization of materials: classification, ordering and description • Inventory of the Shows Program Fund • Design of database in CDS-ISIS format for the base on show programs. • Dump information in the database. • Stamping of programs with identification of the File and document signature. • Advice on musicological aspects. • Participation and community outreach. 2.2.- Comisión Honoraria de Patrimonio Histórico de Salto The archive is housed in the headquarters of the Historic Heritage Honor Commission (CHPHS) in Salto, created in 1985, and contains documents rescued by CHPHS members, and donations made by the community. Results: • Show programs which were adhered at back side of the curtain by the artists, have been photographied and cataloged. • The work model applied for the 2008 project was designed for work at the Teatro Solís in Montevideo. • The Fund for Shows Program has 76 fields and was applied for obtaning information of more than 3000 programs from the Larrañaga's Theater. • Digitalization of theater programs. • Design of the periodical press 13 field database. • Permanent and temporary exhibitions. • Catalogs, teaching materials, and publications. B).- Projects under execution: By using the donated documents from the Choral Association of Salto8, and the collection of popular scores by the local accordionist Tomás Lucas, CIAMEN developed the following two projects: • 2016: "The Choirs and the River: the activity of the Coral Association of the Department of Salto" • 2017: "Uruguay is not a river... Music and popular theater on the left riverbank of Uruguay river". 2.3.- Servicio Oficial de Difusión, Radiotelevisión y Espectáculos (SODRE) It is an institute dependent of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay dedicated to the diffusion and generation of information, art and culture in general. Project: "OSSODRE9 Symphonic Scores Archive" Results: • Ordering of OSSODRE symphonic scores. • Design of database in CDS-ISIS format. • Database with more than 5000 entries of symphonic scores (general scores and partials) of OSSODRE 6 Responsible: Mag. The library of the music belongs to the library net of the Udelar and has the following collections: -Books -Newspaper publications -Sheet music -Vinyl records -Magnetic tapes. -CDs -Videos -Laserdisks -DVD -Microfiche works of National Composers Rolls and sets of microfilms files belonging to the project "Database of Uruguayan composers" has been storaged. URL: https://www.eumus.edu.uy/eum/biblioteca 3.- Private institutions associated with university projects Before the creation of GIDMUS, several of its current members were part of projects linked to private institutions that contain musical documentation. We will mention some previous projects: 3.1. Project "Database of Uruguayan Composers" – 1997 Collaboration between several members of the Association of Graduated in Musicology named "María Leonor Ilarraz Association” (AMLU as Spanish acronym): MA Graciela Carreño, Rosa Scaltritti and MA Marita Fornaro, propose the project to the National Music Fund (FONAM). The project consisted on microfilming manuscripts of the main composers academic of Uruguay. This is the first time made for the preservation and diffusion of the original complete manuscripts of Uruguayan composers. Results: Th • All works of nine outstanding composers of the 20 century have been microfilmed. • A microfilmed copy of the work of each composer and the microfilm cards were given to the legal depositories of each composer's work. • A second roll and set of microfilm files belonging to ALMU were deposited in the Library of the University School of Music of the University of the Republic. 3.2.     Report on the IX Reflection Forum 2019 “Building inclusive societies under the new development paradigm” Montevideo, Uruguay, 2 - 3 October 2019 Executive Summary On 2 and 3 October 2019 the IX EU-LAC Reflection Forum took place in Montevideo (Uruguay), jointly organised by the Uruguayan Agency for International Cooperation (AUCI), the Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Development Centre of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations (ECLAC), the EUROsociAL+ Programme and the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB). In accordance with its mandate to promote debate on matters of priority to the EU-LAC Strategic Association and to encourage contributions to the inter-governmental process from the economic and academic sectors and other sectors of civil society, the EU-LAC Foundation regularly organises Reflection Forums in its member states. To do so, documentary research, photographic documentation, and field research were carried out in order to explore the opportunities of mural tourism in small locations in Uruguay. In the nineties, a new type of artistic production was created in Uruguay, initially characterized by its decentralization. This was somewhat of a revolution in the muralist field as, until this time, Montevideo had been the center of cultural tradition, considered the intellectual focus of the country, and had concentrated the largest number of murals. For this reason, the birth of new muralist nuclei in small rural enclaves, which traditionally had not had much access to culture and no link to muralism, is remarkable. Secondly, this new movement sought to diversify economic activity given the consequences of the severe economic crises and environmental catastrophes that were and are still prevalent in these areas.

The literature on the cultural setting in which player development embedded is scarce, even though many researchers call for more contextual based research. Uruguay with its 3,46 million inhabitants appears to be unique in terms of producing elite football players and achieving results from international competitions with their national team. The purpose of this study was therefore to explore the success of Uruguayan football, which was done through investigating how Uruguayans experience and describe their football culture and how best practice in athlete development is perceived. The study was designed as an explorative case study. The data collection was based on interviews with seven professionals with insight in Uruguayan football (two active players, two ex-professionals, one coach, one football-jurist and one agent) and week of fieldwork in Uruguay, consisting of observations from six games and informal conversations. The Environment Success Factors (Henriksen, 2010) were employed as the conceptual framework for this thesis. The central findings show that the proud history and intense culture for football appears to have created several basic assumptions that facilitate expertise development in Uruguayan football. Within this culture, Uruguayan football players learn numerous psychological skills associated with expertise development in football such as ambition, commitment to succeed, collective efficacy and the ability to manage adversity.

This paper analyzes style and interactive fluency in the body movements that generate sound and music, following the meanings attributed to each drum by noted expert drum musicians. It is argued how African cultural principles organize the musical performance suggesting that these music and dance practices may be fruitfully approached from an Afrocentered hermeneutical perspective. Further, an argument is advanced about the expressivity, philosophy and values embedded in Candombe drumming performances which responds to African cultural senses as well as encoding a local history of epic resistance and revitalization of consciousness.

    One-direction gaps Notes on the origins of video art in Uruguay and Slovenia (Fragment) Francisco Tomsich Introduction There is a growing interest in comparing art histories from Eastern Europe and South America in the field of visual arts, especially concerning the period from about 1960 to 1989. There are three factors that justify this concern. The first one is the direct relationship between the two regions, partly created by the different waves of migration in both directions and their historical processes, and partly by cultural exchange, linked to them or not. The second one is the confirmation and analysis of certain points in common between South America and Eastern Europe in the field of artistic creation since the 1960s1. The third factor is the "contemporaneity" (PREDA, 2015: 56) of "dictatorial regimes" in several countries from both regions in the 1970s and 1980s, a context in which "strategies for dealing with all kinds of political measures of repression were simultaneously being cultivated" (DRESSLER, 2010)2. We face a set of problems, however, when discussing the Yugoslav case in relation to the third factor in the list, given its peculiar political, economic and social characteristics. This circumstance leads to some authors to distinguish between “the Eastern Bloc, Yugoslavia and South America", for example (DE BAERE, 2012: 2), while Caterina Preda's work in this field of comparative analysis often puts apart Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia because of the relative openness and tolerance of the socialist governments of these two countries towards critical artistic practices (PREDA, 2013: 12). This text deals with some aspects of the origins of video art in Uruguay and Slovenia, two countries which have, despite their enormous differences, certain similarities3.
