Experiences of University Institutions in the rescue of the heritage in Uruguay By Yoanna Lizett Diaz Vázquez (*) (*) Member of the Research Center in Musical and Performing Arts of the Salto Headquarters, University of the Republic (Udelar), Uruguay 1.- Introduction Reflections from access and collaboration with Documentation Centers and Music Archives linked to the University of the Republic of Uruguay, through the Research Group of the Department of Musicology (GIDMUS) of the University School of Music (EUM) of Uruguay and the Center for Research in Musical and Performing Arts of the Northwest Coast, in the rescue of the musical heritage of Uruguay. Projects developed along with the cooperation of public and private institutions in Uruguay, and international collaboration. In Uruguay, for several years there were difficulties in accessing the public archives by researchers in music; these "had to face several problems: difficulties for a fluid access, the state of preservation of the documents, the absence of guides, catalogs or even listed non systematic. Neither was there, in most public institutions, competent personnel for the treatment of materials in various supports. By the end of the 20th century, almost all of the country's public collections were in serious deterioration, with very few possibilities for access, much less professional management of documents1. 2.- GIDMUS and CIAMEN collaboration projects for rescuting the Urguayan Musical heritage 2.1.- Center of Documentation, Research and Dissemination of the Performing Arts (CIDDAE as Spanish acronym) CIDDAE was created in 2004 just when the Solís' Theater in Montevideo was reopened. The center is located at Theatre's building, and it contains documents produced by the Theater along time and obtained from private donations. The General Archive of the Solís' Teatro has: Hand Programs Posters Handwritten and Printed Scores Pictures Books of proceedings of the Board of Directors Bordereaux Sketches Press articles Scenic models 1 Fornaro, M. Part of the digitized collection is now available at URL: http://teatrosolis.org.uy/uc_647_1.html Since November 2004, a collaboration between CIDDAE and the Musicology Department of the EUM takes place. Three projects2 have been implemented together with the Solís' Theater as an associated institution. They are found at various stages of development: • 2005 - 2006: "The Archives of the Teatro Solis de Montevideo: an intervention from musicology and archivology"3. • 2007 - 2008: "The Solis Theater in the Uruguayan sociocultural framework"4. • 2009 to date: R & D project "Popular music in the Solís' Theater of the cupleteras and the carnival dances to the Uruguayan Popular Song"5. Results: • An Entertainment Programs Fund was created, suitable to initiate the elaboration of data bases and the analysis of the activity of the Institution. (Http://teatrosolis.org.uy/uc_647_1.html) • Organization of materials: classification, ordering and description • Inventory of the Shows Program Fund • Design of database in CDS-ISIS format for the base on show programs. • Dump information in the database. • Stamping of programs with identification of the File and document signature. • Advice on musicological aspects. • Participation and community outreach. 2.2.- Comisión Honoraria de Patrimonio Histórico de Salto The archive is housed in the headquarters of the Historic Heritage Honor Commission (CHPHS) in Salto, created in 1985, and contains documents rescued by CHPHS members, and donations made by the community. MLA 2017 (Orlando, FL) “IAML, Latin American Forum”—Uruguay Feb. 23, 2017 A).- Projects: Larrañaga Theater Archive • 2004: "The curtain of Larrañaga's Theater in Salto: a cultural reference in the region", conducted by the Chair of History of Music6, Music in Music, University School of Music CENUR Litoral Norte-Salto. • 2008 to date: "The musical and performing arts of the Larrañaga de Salto Theater" by CIAMEN7 This is a collaboration between the follwing Udelar's institutions: Seat of Music History, tehcnical classes en Música, EUM, and CIAMEN. Results: • Show programs which were adhered at back side of the curtain by the artists, have been photographied and cataloged. • The work model applied for the 2008 project was designed for work at the Teatro Solís in Montevideo. • The Fund for Shows Program has 76 fields and was applied for obtaning information of more than 3000 programs from the Larrañaga's Theater. • Digitalization of theater programs. • Design of the periodical press 13 field database. • Permanent and temporary exhibitions. • Catalogs, teaching materials, and publications. B).- Projects under execution: By using the donated documents from the Choral Association of Salto8, and the collection of popular scores by the local accordionist Tomás Lucas, CIAMEN developed the following two projects: • 2016: "The Choirs and the River: the activity of the Coral Association of the Department of Salto" • 2017: "Uruguay is not a river... Music and popular theater on the left riverbank of Uruguay river". 2.3.- Servicio Oficial de Difusión, Radiotelevisión y Espectáculos (SODRE) It is an institute dependent of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay dedicated to the diffusion and generation of information, art and culture in general. Project: "OSSODRE9 Symphonic Scores Archive" Results: • Ordering of OSSODRE symphonic scores. • Design of database in CDS-ISIS format. • Database with more than 5000 entries of symphonic scores (general scores and partials) of OSSODRE 6 Responsible: Mag. The library of the music belongs to the library net of the Udelar and has the following collections: -Books -Newspaper publications -Sheet music -Vinyl records -Magnetic tapes. -CDs -Videos -Laserdisks -DVD -Microfiche works of National Composers Rolls and sets of microfilms files belonging to the project "Database of Uruguayan composers" has been storaged. URL: https://www.eumus.edu.uy/eum/biblioteca 3.- Private institutions associated with university projects Before the creation of GIDMUS, several of its current members were part of projects linked to private institutions that contain musical documentation. We will mention some previous projects: 3.1. Project "Database of Uruguayan Composers" – 1997 Collaboration between several members of the Association of Graduated in Musicology named "María Leonor Ilarraz Association” (AMLU as Spanish acronym): MA Graciela Carreño, Rosa Scaltritti and MA Marita Fornaro, propose the project to the National Music Fund (FONAM). The project consisted on microfilming manuscripts of the main composers academic of Uruguay. This is the first time made for the preservation and diffusion of the original complete manuscripts of Uruguayan composers. Results: Th • All works of nine outstanding composers of the 20 century have been microfilmed. • A microfilmed copy of the work of each composer and the microfilm cards were given to the legal depositories of each composer's work. • A second roll and set of microfilm files belonging to ALMU were deposited in the Library of the University School of Music of the University of the Republic. 3.2.
