Alle loro spalle Paolo Tiralongo e Matteo Montaguti allenati da Lino Remonti e Daniele Callega - rin e Andrea Noè allenati da Cordiano Dagnoni. L’eliminazione ha vissuto momenti di grande spettacolo quando Scarponi e Garzelli si sono lanciati all’attacco, ma alla fine ha prevalso la maggiore attitudine dei velocisti: nel testa a testa finale Alessandro Petacchi ha avuto la meglio sul brianzolo rampante Giacomo Nizzolo. Con loro sul podio, per essere premiati da Fabio Fontaneto titolare della Fontaneto Ravioli, è salito anche Stefano Garzelli, piazzatosi al terzo posto. Lo spettacolo ad Arona ha toccato il suo vertice nella prova scratch con tra - guardo unico finale, nella quale si sono susseguiti gli attacchi portati ad altissima velocità: decisiva l’azione promossa ad otto giri dalla fine da Nibali, Scarponi, Garzelli, Callegarin e Sarmiento. Troppo alta, però, l’andatura per il giovane Sar - miento e per Callegarin, così a giocarsi la vittoria sono stati i tre eroi del Giro con Vincenzo Nibali che solo a dieci metri dal traguardo ha vinto la resistenza degli avversari. Sul podio, per la premiazione effettuata da Giovanni Fiori Guffanti in rappresentanza della Guffanti Formaggi, sono saliti quindi Nibali, Scarponi e Gar - zelli nell’ordine, poi assediati, come tutti i loro compagni di avventura, dai tifosi a caccia di autografi e di foto ricordo. A chiudere la serata, inserita nel calendario delle manifestazioni della 49a Fiera del Lago Maggiore, aperta fino a domenica prossima, gli interventi del vi - cepresidente della Provincia di Novara, Luca Bona, e del sindaco di Arona, Alberto Gusmeroli, che hanno sottolineato come manifestazioni tradizionali e popolari come la kermesse dei campioni siano un fiore all’occhiello per Arona e per tutto il territorio novarese e del Lago Maggiore. This article develops a socio-economic model that analyzes the doping decision of professional athletes. In their decision to use performance enhancing drugs athletes do not only evaluate the costs and benefits (in terms of potential rank improvement). They also take into account peer-group ap- proval of using drugs. Peer-group approval is modelled as a lagged endogenous variable that depends on the share of drug using athletes in the history of a sport. This way, the model can explain multiple equilibria as “doping cul- tures”. Besides the comparative statics of the equilibrium (how can a doping culture be eliminated?) the article also investigates how the doping decision is affected by standards set by the respective leader in a sport, e.g. Olympic qualification marks, and by the taste of victory, i.e. the disproportionate public veneration of winners.     Tyler Farrar from Wenatchee. For those of you who are following the Tour de France, you will recognize the name Tyler Farrar. He is from the town where I live, Wenatchee. The fact that he is not only in the Tour, but also doing well, has really created a buzz of excitement here. The local newspaper, The Wenatchee World, has a daily spot about the race so we can all keep up to date with how Tyler is doing. What we are holding our breath for, is the sprint into Paris. He will be against Mark Cavendish, the English missile, and other sprinters such as Thor Hushov and Alessandro Petacchi. My husband and I are amazingly addicted to the tour; we have it taped, and so, in the evenings, that's what we watch. Sorry kids, no cartoons. Tyler's father lives and works in Wenatchee; he is a surgeon, and is often seen biking in the local parks. Tyler must have been an unusual child for this area of the States. Most boys become deeply involved in baseball, basketball, or football. Now, soccer and hockey are also popular. However, Tyler started competitive biking when he was only thirteen years old. His father said that from then on, he knew that cycling was what he wanted to do. He is still young, only twenty-seven, so he has many years of cycling ahead of him. As far as his training is concerned, he lives in Ghent, in Belgium. His upbringing here in Wenatchee served him well for building strength and stamina for cycling.

Mark Cavendish was not present at the start and as a consequence Tom was the only rider able to reach Oellibrandt’s record. Bernucci, Pronk, Brutt and Louder formed the traditional early breakaway and the maximum gap between the four breakers and the bunch reached 6’56”. A first crash involving Ciolek and Haussler amongst other riders took place at 40 km from the finishing line. At the entrance of the last local lap, the four leaders still had an advantage of 1’07”. Knaven and Hammond counterattacked but at 4 km from the line, the bunch was packed together again. Van Avermaet launched his sprint too early and Petacchi, without his teammates’ help, chose the right side of the road to come to the front in a very impressive way. Nothing and nobody was still able to defeat him when a very big massive crash happened just behind him. Robbie McEwen, Tom Boonen, Greg Van Avermaet and many other riders were the victims of that crash and made acquaintance with Churchill Avenue asphalt. Nobody was badly hurt except McEwen who suffered a brain concussion. It may seem incredible but that was Alessandro Petacchi’s first victory on Belgium territory except for Aalst Criterium. La 1ª edición de la Vuelta, con 3.425 km repartidos en 14 etapas, se disputó en 1935, siendo organizada por el diario Informaciones (en base a la idea original de Clemente Lopez Doriga) y con victoria para el belga Gustaaf Deloor. Los primeros años fueron muy complicados, tanto por las dificultades económicas de los organizadores como por causas externas, dejando de disputarse la carrera durante la Guerra Civil española, la 2ª Guerra Mundial, en 1949, y de 1951 a 1954, cuando el Diario Ya renunció a organizar la prueba (se había hecho cargo en 1945). En 20 años de existencia apenas se habían podido celebrar 9 ediciones. A partir de 1955 la carrera ya no sufrió más interrupciones, primero bajo el mando del El Correo Español/El Pueblo Vasco (1955 a 1978), y mas tarde de Unipublic, organizadora de la prueba desde 1979 hasta la actualidad. Pero eso no significa que La Vuelta haya atravesado un “camino de rosas” desde entonces, estando a punto de desaparecer en 1979 y teniendo que cambiar en 1995 las tradicionales fechas de abril/mayo por el mes de septiembre para poder mantener una participación aceptable.
