Nonhwest Anlhropological Research Notes 25(1):103-115. (1991). A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF JAMES A. TEIT RODERICK SPRAGUE University of Idaho A brief eleven-item bibliography of James Alexander Teit [born Tait] (1864- 1922) accompanied two obituaries written by Boas (1922, 1923). More recently a brief bibliographic sketch with the same bibliography was published as a tribute to Teit's contribution to the study of British Columbia pictographs (Comer 1968). Unfortunately these bibliographies are incomplete and contain several bibliographical errors. Additionally, twelve works have been published under Teit's name since the issuance of the original obituaries. Researchers utilizing G. P. Murdock's Ethnographic Bibliography will also find frequent errors in the year of publication for Teit's entries. The most recent and by far the most complete bibliography of Teit is one put together by his son Sigurd for a commemorative issue of the Nicola Valley Histoncal Quarterly issued in 1979. While still not complete and suffering from stylistic problems, it did add one source to this work (Menitt Herald 1967). Voegelin and Harris (1945) in their list of manuscripts in the Boas linguistic collection did not list any of the Teit manuscripts among those that had been published. However, several titles appear to have been published, for example compare Ms. 306 and Teit 1930a. Manuscripts listed in Freeman (1966) and Voegelin and Harris (1945) often have different titles for the same item. Of the items published under Teit's name, over two-thirds of the titles or 96% of the pages are still available in reprint form. An attempt is being made to acquire copies of all publications and photocopies of all manuscript material for the Pacific Northwest Anthropological Archives at the University of Idaho. A complete collection in one facility of all items in this bibliography would be of immeasurable help to anyone wishing to research the work of Teit. There are over 2200 printed pages in 42 sources by him, over 650 in 73 sources about him, and at least 5000 manuscript pages in 34 sources by him. Additions and corrections are solicited. The importance of Teit to the study of Plateau ethnology, folklore, linguistics, and ethnographic analogy in archaeology often has been overlooked by researchers in that culture area. This bibliography, collected casually over a twenty five year period, is presented not only as an aid to research but also as an indication of and a tribute to James A Teit's contribution to the study of aboriginal populations in the Plateau. Sources both by and about Teit are included. The style follows no specific journal or discipline but rather attempts to include all possible information as required by any field. Pages listed in brackets are specific to Teit when found in a more general work. Numerous people have helped with this bibliography. Special thanks are due Doris Lundy and Grant Keddie for British Columbia items, Barbara Daniels Swannack for items in Ottawa, and Allan H. Smith for introducing me to the works of James A Teit many years ago and for recently reviewing the manuscript. 103 104 Sources by James A Teit Teit, James A 1895 The Tinneh Tribes of Nicola Valley, edited by Franz Boas.
