  • ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 School of Sciences and Mathematics Annual Report 2014‐2015
ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 School of Sciences and Mathematics Annual Report 2014‐2015 Executive Summary The 2014 – 2015 academic year was a very successful one for the School of Sciences and Mathematics (SSM). Our faculty continued their stellar record of publication and securing extramural funding, and we were able to significantly advance several capital projects. In addition, the number of majors in SSM remained very high and we continued to provide research experiences for a significant number of our students. We welcomed four new faculty members to our ranks. These individuals and their colleagues published 187 papers in peer‐reviewed scientific journals, many with undergraduate co‐authors. Faculty also secured $6.4M in new extramural grant awards to go with the $24.8M of continuing awards. During the 2013‐14 AY, ground was broken for two 3,000 sq. ft. field stations at Dixie Plantation, with construction slated for completion in Fall 2014. These stations were ultimately competed in June 2015, and will begin to serve students for the Fall 2015 semester. The 2014‐2015 academic year, marked the first year of residence of Computer Science faculty, as well as some Biology and Physics faculty, in Harbor Walk. In addition, nine Biology faculty had offices and/or research space at SCRA, and some biology instruction occurred at MUSC. In general, the displacement of a large number of students to Harbor Walk went very smoothly. Temporary astronomy viewing space was secured on the roof of one of the College’s garages. The SSM dean’s office expended tremendous effort this year to secure a contract for completion of the Rita Hollings Science Center renovation, with no success to date.

  • Carefully Pieced Together Around Feist
FEIST ‘Let It Die’ is very much a voice album in close up, “eye to eye and ear to ear”. Carefully pieced together around Feist’s seductive and jhai* voice, the album forms the missing link between ye old folk (storytelling), the Brill building era (the quest for the hook), doo-wop (melody and mood) and minimal modern pop arrangements. Like line drawings as opposed to detailed paintings, these songs leave you space to fill in the emotional blanks. Its lack of complication makes ‘Let It Die’ standout from much of today’s musical offerings; put simply, a beautiful slice of sonic escapism to illustrate and interrupt the little moments that together tell us stories. A history not lacking in variety, the Canadian born singer has accomplished much in her few tender years, so for those inquisitive journo types, here are the last few years in a nut shell… “My first proper gig was supporting the Ramones at an outdoor festival when my high school punk band won a battle of the bands contest. We played together for about 5 years. I moved to Toronto from Calgary to see a musical injuries doctor, after losing my voice on my first cross-Canadian tour when I was 19. Not knowing a soul in Toronto I spent 6 months in a dark basement apartment with a 4 track and having been told not to sing I got a guitar to do it for me. A couple of years later I was playing guitar in By Divine Right and toured for 6 months opening for the Tragically Hip, mostly in front of stadium crowds of around 40,000.

  • Bio // Jason Collet // Rat a Tat Tat
BIO // JASON COLLET // RAT A TAT TAT Album: Rat A Tat Tat Catalogue #: A&C052 Format: DD / CD / 1xLP Canada Release Date: March 9, 2010 International Release Date: March 9, 2010 They say that life begins at 40, but in the case of Jason Collett, that’s not just some overly optimistic bumper- sticker slogan. To many indie-rock fans, Jason Collett is the wise, big-brother character in Broken Social Scene: the calm, cool, collected totem of stability in a band defined by drama and chaos — “our Tom Petty figure,” as BSS figurehead Kevin Drew once (half-jokingly) dubbed him. But this reading of Collett belies the restless, curious spirit that he’s exhibited throughout his solo career outside of Broken Social Scene. For someone who’s been a fixture on the Toronto live-music circuit for two decades, you could totally understand if an artist of Collett’s experience and vintage settled into a country-rock comfort zone, and kept strumming the same ol’ songs until his ears gave out. But at the core of Collett’s big brotherly wisdom is the idea that, the older you get, the more you realize there’s still so much to learn. To wit, Rat a Tat Tat: the fourth album to bear Jason Collett’s name, but the first to make you double-check who you’re actually listening to: as the opening elegy “Rave On Sad Songs” blossoms from a solitary serenade into an Irish-pub last-call waltz, we hear a voice that’s several degrees more conversational and starkly unaffected than the one heard on previous Collett signatures like “Tiny Ocean of Tears,” “Almost Summer” or “Out of Time.” But it’s a gesture that perfectly suits a song wherein Collett seemingly bids farewell to the maudlin confessionals that can define — and restrict — many a singer-songwriter.

  • Exclusive Album Premiere: Zeus, 'Busting Visions'
PRESS KIT 2012 Exclusive Album Premiere: Zeus, ‘Busting Visions’ Toronto band returns with second album Toronto’s Zeus play a rootsy, melodic brand of rock that earned the band consideration for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize upon the release of their 2010 debut, Say Us. They’ve been issuing a steady stream of singles leading up to the release of their second album, Busting Visions, which comes out March 27th. In the meantime, you can stream the full release exclusively here. ZEUS PRESS KIT ROLLING STONE MARCH 2012 Could Toronto’s Zeus be the next great Canadian band? BEN CAPLAN At a sound check at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern, with beers on their amplifiers, Zeus rips through their new album, Busting Visions. They switch instruments, obsess over sound levels and noodle inces- santly across the past six decades of popular tunes. Zeus have been touted by Broken Social Scene’s Jason Collett as the next great Ca- nadian rock band and now they’re headlining Friday night’s marquee event at the end of Canadian Music Week. For the four musi- cians from small town Ontario, the group may finally be arriving at a sound they’ve been working toward since they were kids. “I woke up the other day and something felt different. I can feel it, potential, and it makes for some nervous energy,” says Neil Quin, 26, one of three members of Zeus who writes songs, plays bass and guitar and also sings. “We’ve definitely put in our time and rose up through the ranks,” adds Mike O’Brien, 31, who fell in with his bandmates when Afie Jurvanen, who records as Bahamas, left their group to play stadiums with Feist.

  • Turtle Rock Guitar Book 5.Pdf
Preface to the 5th Edition This book and the Guitar Club that went with it started because one of my old counsellors put a few guitar chords into the official camp song book. Those chords were the reason I learned to play. That summer, when we were last-year campers, regular activities were cancelled one day because of stormy weather. We all piled into the lodge, where we sat with Ryley and her guitar, singing all afternoon. It was the first time a lot of us had ever sung our favourite camp songs with a guitar. At the time, I'd never even heard recordings of most of them. (This is before Napster, kids.) I remain ever thankful that we didn't play Rainy Day Bingo that afternoon. At the end of the summer I started writing in chords for the rest of the song book, which gradually led to the first edition of The Mi-A-Kon-Da Guitar Book. Since then, this book's seen a few new places and met a lot of new songs. It seemed about time to give it a name that would bring everything and everyone together. Turtle Rock does just this. On Birch Island, it's where the whole camp meets after lights out on Mi-A-Kon-Da night to sing quiet songs by the fire, listen to the camp legend, and watch the full moon rise over the lake. It's also where we meet for special cook-outs, reflections, and early in the morning to watch that bittersweet Last Sunrise of the Summer.
