She has helped movements in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Ireland, Switzerland and Austria with their campaigns against genetic engineering. In 2003, when the US initiated a dispute against the EU to remove the bans and moratoria on genetically modified crops and foods, Dr. Shiva launched a global citizens campaign on GMOs in the WTO. Dr. Shiva was one of the first Honorary Patrons of Planet in Focus, along with Dr. David Suzuki. Canadian Eco-Hero: Activist and Musician, Amy Millan Amy Millan is a Canadian indie rock singer and guitarist. She has recorded and performed with the bands Stars and Broken Social Scene as well as having a successful solo career. However her current role as an environmental activist and leader. ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 School of Sciences and Mathematics Annual Report 2014‐2015 Executive Summary The 2014 – 2015 academic year was a very successful one for the School of Sciences and Mathematics (SSM). Our faculty continued their stellar record of publication and securing extramural funding, and we were able to significantly advance several capital projects. In addition, the number of majors in SSM remained very high and we continued to provide research experiences for a significant number of our students. We welcomed four new faculty members to our ranks. These individuals and their colleagues published 187 papers in peer‐reviewed scientific journals, many with undergraduate co‐authors. Faculty also secured $6.4M in new extramural grant awards to go with the $24.8M of continuing awards. During the 2013‐14 AY, ground was broken for two 3,000 sq. ft. field stations at Dixie Plantation, with construction slated for completion in Fall 2014. These stations were ultimately competed in June 2015, and will begin to serve students for the Fall 2015 semester. The 2014‐2015 academic year, marked the first year of residence of Computer Science faculty, as well as some Biology and Physics faculty, in Harbor Walk. In addition, nine Biology faculty had offices and/or research space at SCRA, and some biology instruction occurred at MUSC. In general, the displacement of a large number of students to Harbor Walk went very smoothly. Temporary astronomy viewing space was secured on the roof of one of the College’s garages. The SSM dean’s office expended tremendous effort this year to secure a contract for completion of the Rita Hollings Science Center renovation, with no success to date.

  • Turtle Rock Guitar Book 5.Pdf
Preface to the 5th Edition This book and the Guitar Club that went with it started because one of my old counsellors put a few guitar chords into the official camp song book. Those chords were the reason I learned to play. That summer, when we were last-year campers, regular activities were cancelled one day because of stormy weather. We all piled into the lodge, where we sat with Ryley and her guitar, singing all afternoon. It was the first time a lot of us had ever sung our favourite camp songs with a guitar. At the time, I'd never even heard recordings of most of them. (This is before Napster, kids.) I remain ever thankful that we didn't play Rainy Day Bingo that afternoon. At the end of the summer I started writing in chords for the rest of the song book, which gradually led to the first edition of The Mi-A-Kon-Da Guitar Book. Since then, this book's seen a few new places and met a lot of new songs. It seemed about time to give it a name that would bring everything and everyone together. Turtle Rock does just this. On Birch Island, it's where the whole camp meets after lights out on Mi-A-Kon-Da night to sing quiet songs by the fire, listen to the camp legend, and watch the full moon rise over the lake. It's also where we meet for special cook-outs, reflections, and early in the morning to watch that bittersweet Last Sunrise of the Summer.

PRESS RELEASE // JASON COLLETT // IDOLS OF EXILE ARTS & CRAFTS TO RELEASE NEW JASON COLLETT STUDIO ALBUM ‘IDOLS OF EXILE’ IN CANADA ON JUNE 14, 2005 April 18, 2005. Toronto. Arts & Crafts is thrilled to announce that on June 14 we will be releasing Idols Of Exile, the new studio album by Jason Collett. Written during the two years he spent touring with Broken Social Scene and recorded this past winter with producer Howie Beck, Idols of Exile showcases Collett at his best. Collett’s 2003 Arts & Crafts release, Motor Motel Love Songs, was received with glowing critical acclaim around the world. A compilation of material from his earlier indie albums, the New York Times labeled it, “recommended to disillusioned Ryan Adams fans everywhere” while our own Now Magazine declared it “a marvelously intimate feat of singer-songwriting craft on par with Ron Sexsmith’s best work.” Idols Of Exile marks a powerful move forward for Collett; a summary of his time spent juggling a burgeoning solo career and a family, all the while honing his song craft touring the world with Broken Social Scene. The album features performances from many of Jason’s closest friends; including most of the Broken Social Scene (Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff) and extended Broken Social Scene; Metric’s Emily Haines and James Shaw; Stars’ Amy Millan and Evan Cranley; Apostle Of Hustle’s Andrew Whiteman and Julian Brown; Do Make Say Think’s Charles Spearin; and Feist. Jason’s also enlisted some of Canada’s finest to play on Idols Of Exile including, Andrew Cash, Chris Brown, Tony Sherr, Bob Egan, Jason Tait, Afie, Julie Penner and Liam O’Neil.

Ian Dahlman ii “A Big, Beautiful Mess”: Collectivity, Capitalism, Arts & Crafts and Broken Social Scene Ian Dahlman Master of Arts, Program in Communication and Culture Ryerson University and York University 2009 Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to critically examine the emergence of new forms of collectivity in Canadian independent popular music. A case study was conducted centring on the Toronto-based collective Broken Social Scene and its label Arts & Crafts, and original interviews were conducted with Stuart Berman, Charles Spearin, Jason Collett, Jeffrey Remedios, and Brendan Canning. An analysis of the major labels and a history of the sensibilities of independent artists establish the habitus of an independent artist at the end of the 1990s.

BIO // AMY MILLAN // HONEY FROM THE TOMBS // MAY 2006 “Her lyrics are dense and elemental, thick with imagery of sun, moon and sky. Millan’s voice is intimate and still like country air, while biscuit-box beats, electric guitar and New Orleans brass build on a bluegrass foundation... She comes over like Tammy Wynette crossed with Parker Posey – an indie queen with a Kentucky twang.” – Uncut Available in stores and online at arts-crafts.ca Tom Waits has inspired countless records. King Tut’s influence, on the other hand, has generally been restricted to the Bangles. At least until now. “It’s from a Tom Waits interview that I read, where he had a couple songs that were quite old on his new record that was coming out,” Amy Millan says, explaining the title of her new album. “He said mummies were buried with honey because it never went bad. So when the archeologists pulled them up, there was all this honey that was still fine. So he said, that’s kind of how I think of the songs. That they’ve been buried for a long time, but they’re still sweet.” Amy Millan is not, to our knowledge at least, an ancient Egyptian queen. Nor are her songs, so far as we know, edible. But on all other accounts the above bit of folklore is the story of the 12 songs that make up her solo debut, Honey From The Tombs. Little reminders of your impossibly romantic early 20s – preserved, aged, then dug up and discovered to have lost none of their original sweetness.
