Daardie persoon het somtyds geraai aangesien hulle nie van beter geweet het nie. Dus moet nie die gegewens as korrek aanvaar voordat dit bevestig nie. Voorbeelde is: my vrou se oupa se doopnaam was Willem, op sy SK was dit aangegee as William. In die famillie was daar 'n aantal Willems so het hy met die naam William opgeeindig. Op elkeen van my ma, broers en susters is die ouma se geboorteplek as vyf verskilende provinsies aangegee. Sy was gebore in die Transvaal, Vrystaat, Noord Kaap en Betsjoannaland. Haar man, die oupa, het elke keer wanneer die kind geregistreer is geraai omdat hy nie seker was nie. Dit het heelwat navorsing gekos om vastestel dat sy in Taung gebore was. Vir my was straatname (ens) die sous oor die kool. Nou is ek weer by straatname. In die Boesmanland brief is daar twee vanne wat ek herken: Mouton en Alheit. In Carnarvon het ons gewoon in nommer een Moutonstraat, en daar was ook ‘n Alheitstraat – trouens, die enigste Alheit wat ek ooit geken het. Na wie is hierdie strate vernoem? Die kwaal het lank gelede sy greep gekry toe ek begin het om inligting oor die familie op te skrywe, en ek ook besonderhede van die dooies bekom het. Nuuskierigheid oor hulle wat lankal weg is, sleep my die argiewe in. Eers is dit net my eie voorsate, maar dan begin ek wonder oor die families waar hulle ingetrou het. Met die grawery besef ek hoe swak die genealogie in ons geweste nagevors is. Dit maak my vies: moet ons dan hier ook afgeskeep word? En ek grawe wyer. Die gevolg is dat ek nou beskik oor heelwat inligting oor Boesmanlandse takke van die volgende families: Barnard, Bezuidenhout, Blaauw, Burger, Buys, Callaghan, Compaan, Compion, de Vries, Engels, Fitzgerald, Grobler, Hayes, Hendrikse, Hoepfner, Horn, Hough, Knouwds, Kruger, Lubbe, Mouton, Nolte, Richter, Stadler, Thirion, van der Colff, van Sittert, van Taak, van Tiddens, Visser en Wolhuter. My werkswyse is rofweg soos volg. Ek werk stelselmatig deur gemeentes se registers en skryf elke liewe doop en huwelik uit hierdie families op. Eers kom die "rand" (Clanwilliam, Prins Albert en om tot Victoria-Wes) tot 1900, dan dié wat "nader" is (Calvinia, Carnarvon en Prieska) tot 1920, en laaste my "hartland" (Brandvlei tot by Upington") tot 1950. Dit word aangevul met inligting uit die sterfkennis en grafskrif van elkeen wat ek kan opspoor. En dan kom die plesierigheid: om elkeen van hierdie persone aan 'n geslagregister te koppel. Dis lekkerder as om diamante te delwe! Jy werk nie alleen nie. Langs die pad ontmoet jy wonderlike mense wat graag inligting uitruil; wat help en aanspoor. Só beskik ons "span" tans oor meer as 10,000 foto's uit kerkregisters en begraafplase in die hartland. Vele persone hoor van die gesoek, en stuur hulle takkie se besonderhede. Die oogmerk hiermee is om inligting uit die Boesmanland in gerieflike formaat in die openbare domein te kry waar navorsers dit kan benut. Daarom is ek dankbaar dat die Genealogiese Genootskap van Suid-Afrika aangebied het om hierdie werk later vanjaar op 'n kompakskyf te versprei as deel van hul Omnibus-reeks. Dan is dit wyer bekend en landswyd beskikbaar. Intussen is ek oortuig dat daar onder julle, en verder die Boesmanland in, mense is wat belangstel in die inligting wat ek reeds beskikbaar het. En ek is ook oortuig dat daar mense is wat graag inligting oor hulle tak wil deel sodat ons die prentjie van hulle familie meer volledig kan maak. Miskien het iemand uit "my families" met iemand uit "jou familie" getrou. Hierdie is 'n ope uitnodiging aan julle om my te skakel sodat ons kan praat oor hoe ons inligting kan uitruil. Ek soek nie geld nie, net meer inligting - altyd maar meer inligting. Soms, as ek oor hierdie onderwerp dink, kry ek 'n koudte om die hart. Daar is soveel kosbare inligting oor ons geweste wat mense getrou versamel het, en wat saam met hulle begrawe gaan word. Daar het al veel daarvan oor my pad gekom. Soos die verhaal van 'n vrou wat 1918 op Alheit gebore is, en saam met haar ouers Duitswes toe getrek het, of ds Jacob Wasserfall van Keimoes se dagboek (1918), of 'n storie uit die Maass-familie oor die beginjare op Namies. Hoeveel grafte lê vergete op nou verlate plase? In hoeveel families is daar Bybels en geskrifte met unieke inligting? Kan ons nie 'n volgende Omnibus-geleentheid as medium gebruik om sulke inligting te "publiseer" en te bewaar nie? As die Here my nog gesondheid gee, gaan ek in elk geval volgende jaar met 'n tweede sarsie families begin en deurwerk. Dit gee ons rede tot 'n volgende CD.     A Brief History of Colesberg with reference to the Arnots and their family home, now The Barracks Much of the contents of this brief and specific history of Colesberg comes from the excellent book “The Microcosm” written by Dr. Thelma Gutsche and published by Howard Timmins in 1968. Millions of years ago, the present landmark of Colesberg – Coleskop (originally known as Toverberg and Toorenberg) - was level with the surrounding landscape. Floods and gales gradually wore away the surrounding areas so that, today, Coleskop stands proud and can be seen from great distances as travelers approach. The earliest inhabitants were the Bushmen (Khoisan) followed by the Hottentots and later by the Ama-Xhosa moving down the eastern seaboard to escape the dangers from the marauding Zulus. From the south-west came the Griquas – a race born out of the inter-breeding of Hottentots with Whites and Bushmen. Whites first came to the area in the middle of the 18th Century when farmers brought their cattle over the Sneeuwbergen from the Camdeboo for winter grazing and hunting of the teeming herds of game with their long-barreled heavy muzzle-loaders. These same guns were also used in attempts to exterminate the Bushmen and Hottentots. To the Bushmen, a gariep was a river and they were seldom far from water, albeit a spring such as was found in Colesberg. The rivers in the vicinity – now known as the Zeekoerivier, Van der Walt’s Rivier and Oorlogspoortrivier - provided, besides the precious water, food in the form of mussels, fish and hippos. However, with the hunting equipment available to them, the numerous species of game that roamed the plains provided a much easier supply of meat than the dangerous hippos.

Slegs die Oorvaalse gebied was vir die Voortrekkers oor en hier was daar drie duidelike geografies-politieke groepe: Wes-Transvaal (Pot­ chefstroom) onder Andries Pretorius, Noord-Transvaal (Zoutpansberg) onder Potgieter, en Oos-Transvaal (Lydenburg) - Ohrigstad is weens die koor:; ontruim - onder 'n eie Volksraad. Die Transvaalse Trekkergemeenskap het egter die noodsaaklikheid ingesien om hulle geledere te sluit en 'n eenheidstaat te bewerkstellig. So het in 1849 weI 'n vereniging tussen Potchefstroom en Lydenburg tot stand gekom, maar Zoutpansberg was afsydig. Pretorius en Potgieter kon mekaar nie vind nie. Pretorius wou met die Britse gesag oor onafhanklikheid onderhandeI, terwyl Potgieter geen heil in so 'n beleid gesien het nie. Die Britse gesag in die Oranjerivier-Soewereiniteit was aan die wankel onder talryke moeilikhede, waaronder die republikeinsgesindheid van sy inwoners nie die minste was nie. Die Basoeto's het die Warden-bewind bedreig; in die Kaapkolonie het die Agtste Grensoorlog gewoed; in Natal was daar gerugte dat die Zoeloes Pretorius se hulp ingeroep het om die Engelse uit Natal te verdryf. Daarby het die Brit"e regering op hierdie stadium 'n anti-koloniale beleid voorgestaan onder die oortuiging dat verdere koloniale uitbreiding slegs meer koste en geen werklike voordeel meebring nie. Van hierdie omstandighede het Andries Pretorius handig gebruik gemaak deur hom bereid te verklaar om te onderhandel.

LEANDER STARR JAMESON, whose strange adven­ turous story is the subject of this book, was born in Edinburgh on February 9, 1853. The middle of the nineteenth century was an expansive age for the British people; they were then developing the world heritage left to them by their forefathers, and Jameson was one of a family of no less than eleven children. These J amesons came, so the tradition goes, from the Shetland Islands; and both their origin and their crest, a ship in full sail, with ' Sine motu' for motto, suggest that they once followed a seafaring life. But they had been long settled in Leith and Edinburgh. Thomas Jameson, Leander's great­ grandfather, and Thomas's son, also Thomas, the grandfather, were shipowners and merchants of the port and burgesses of the city, and it is said that the grandlather made· a fortune in whale-oil and soap-boiling during the French wars, and lost part of it by reason of the peace.
