DESCRIPTORS *Comics (Publications); Cultural Differences; *Cultural Influences; French; Japanese; *Translation ABSTRACT This article explores translation strategies in English and French versions of Japanese comic books, comparing English and French dialogue text regarding local color, atmospherics, and characterization. Section 1 describes Japanese comic books. Section 2 examines translation strategies. Sections 3 and 4 discuss local color and character locus (translation of culture-specific items and of non-standard dialect and foreigner talk). Section 5 discusses the translation of register (situations of language use) .Section 6 highlights comic book character role (the soldier, schoolgirl, and vamp) .Section 7 discusses atmospherics (jargonization) .Section 8 concludes that American translators used naturalizing strategies, both culturally (name changes and insertion of references to American culture) and linguistically (stereotypical use of dialects and use of heavily marked register). Strategies used in the French versions are less naturalizing than those used in the American versions. Culturally, they are more foreignizing in conserving names and culture-specific items. Linguistically, in some translations, transfers and calques from the English version are used, and as a result, the dialogue reads like a translation, but not from the Japanese original. Other French translations reveal linguistic neutralization with regard to dialect and register. -

Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history. -

Email: [email protected] Virtual office hours: Monday-Friday, 12:00-12:50, and by arrangement Text: Reading packet posted under “Files.” Course Description: In this class we will consider the history, achievements and problems of comic books, manga, and graphic novels. Comics, under one name or another, have been around for many years, but have achieved legitimacy relatively recently. We will study how they grew to become accepted and respected media. By considering examples from different times and places, we will have opportunities to learn how comics have functioned as part of global system of cultural power and influence. Creating and studying comics can contribute to the goals of the Humanities in several ways. These include by helping us to think more creatively and critically; to understand the world more widely and deeply; to communicate more clearly; and, by building empathy, to become more fully human. Course Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. explain how comics, manga and graphic novels have evolved, as formats, as industries, and as means of expression 2. describe the works of some cartoonists from various times and places 3. apply the basic principles of cartooning to create an original and understandable work in comics format 4. research a question related to sequential art (comic books, manga, or graphic novels) and present your findings Course Method: The methods most frequently used in this class will include the instructor’s illustrated lectures (recorded with Panopto); reading the assigned materials; writing assignments; and cartooning lessons. -

Selling Marvel's Cinematic Superheroes
Stream: Culture/Politics/Technology 2016, Vol 8(2), 23-35 © The Author(s), 2016 http://journals.sfu.ca/stream Selling Marvel’s Cinematic Superheroes through Militarization Brett Pardy School of Communication Simon Fraser University Abstract The Marvel comics film adaptations have been some of the most successful Hollywood products of the post 9/11 period, bringing formerly obscure cultural texts into the mainstream. Through an analysis of the adaptation process of Marvel Entertainment’s superhero franchise from comics to film, I argue that militarization has been used by Hollywood as a discursive formation with which to transform niche properties into mass market products. I consider the locations of narrative ambiguities in two key comics texts, The Ultimates (2002-2007) and The New Avengers (2005-2012), as well as in the film The Avengers (2011), and demonstrate the significant reorientation towards the military of the film franchise. While Marvel had attempted to produce film adaptations for decades, only under the new “militainment” discursive formation was it finally successful. I argue that superheroes are malleable icons, known largely by the public by their image and perhaps general character traits rather than their narratives. Militainment is introduced through a discourse of realism provided by Marvel Studios as an indicator that the property is not just for children. An Elective Course for Undergraduate and Graduate Students of any discipline and for English Language Students GRAPHIC NARRATIVE IN CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE & ART: EVOLUTION OF COMIC BOOK TO GRAPHIC NOVEL Basic Requirements: Appropriate language skills required by the University. This course should be of interest to anyone concerned with verbal & visual communications, popular forms, mass culture, history and its representation, colonialism, politics, journalism, writing, philosophy, religion, mythology, mysticism, metaphysics, cultural exchanges, aesthetics, post-modernism, theatre, film, comic art, collections, popular art & culture, literature, fine arts, etc. This course may have a specific appeal to fans and/or to those who are curious about this vastly influential, widely popular, most complex and thought-provoking work of contemporary literature and art form, the ‘Comics’; however it does not presume a prior familiarity with graphic novels and/or comics, just an overall enthusiasm to learn new things from a new angle and an open mind. Prerequisites: FA489: ‘By consent’ selection of students. FA490: Upon successful completion of FA489. Co-requisites: FA489: Freshmen who graduated from a high school with an English curriculum or passed BU proficiency test with an A; & sophomore, junior, senior students. FA490: Successful completion of FA 489. No requisites: FA 49I, FA49J, FA49V. Recommended Preparation: Reading all of the required readings and as many from the suggested reading list. Idea Description: Is ‘comics’ a form of both literature and art? Certainly the answer is “yes” but there are many people who reject the idea, yet many other people call those people old-school intellectuals. However, in recent years, many scholars, critics and faculty alike have accepted ‘comics’, often dubbed by many publishers as ‘graphic novel’, as a respected form of both literature and art. -
