Front Matters UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Between Sovereignties: Chinese Minor Settler Literature Across the Pacific A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature by Yu-ting Huang 2015 © Copyright by Yu-ting Huang 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Between Sovereignties: Chinese Minor Settler Literature Across the Pacific by Yu-ting Huang Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature University of California, Los Angeles Professor Shu-mei Shih, Co-chair Professor Elizabeth DeLoughrey, Co-chair Taking as its subject Chinese immigrant-settler literature across the Pacific, this study introduces the concept of minor settler to describe settlers who are marginalized within settler society, as later-coming immigrants, racialized minority, or colonized peoples. Maintaining that their experiences of settlement differ from those of dominant settlers, and also foregrounding their role and responsibility as settlers perpetuating Indigenous dispossession, this dissertation is motivated by two research questions: (1) how minor settler aspiration for identity and belonging may corroborate settler ideology of non-native right to place, and (2) whether and how their minority struggle may lead to productive engagement with Indigenous decolonization. To answer these questions, I examine contemporary literary fictions by Chinese minor settler authors in Hawai‘i, Aotearoa New Zealand, and Taiwan. Using critical insights from settler colonial studies and Indigenous critical theories, I analyze Chinese minor settler narratives against each location’s layered settler colonial history, Indigenous political expressions, and racial and !ii national discourses, illustrating how these different conditions of literary production give rise to specific themes, formal qualities, and political commitments in minor settler literary narratives across national contexts. In each case I scrutinize instances where minor settler articulations facilitate ongoing settler hegemony and Indigenous silence, and also seek moments when they turn to Indigenous historiography and values for alternative relations and conversations. This study concludes that minor settler narratives can and do engage with both dominant settler and Indigenous narratives, as these coincide on the same geographical site and through interlocking historical processes. Despite their marginality, in narrating identity, belonging, place, and history, minor settler authors commit into writing their understanding of nation and subjectivity, and contribute to the ongoing negotiations between settler and Indigenous sovereignties. !iii This dissertation of Yu-ting Huang is approved. It is both bizarre and fitting that it was in Los Angeles, the paradigmatic postmodern third space, that I first came to perceive my identity as a Han settler in my home country of Taiwan and a foreigner-resident on unceded Native American land. Wherever I stand, my belonging is a debt. This dissertation acknowledges, before all else, my unshakable responsibilities to Indigenous peoples and lands. Yet in the process of writing this dissertation, I have also accumulated numerous debts that are immediate and deeply felt. Many people’s love and support sustain the research and emotional work in these pages: First and foremost, I will remain forever grateful to Shu-mei Shih for inviting me to consider comparative literature as an intellectual calling during our first chance meeting in Taiwan almost ten years ago, and for being my mentor and advocate in the many years that follow. Shu-mei's unwavering support, trail-blazing scholarship, and intellectual curiosity provide the unparalleled foundations for my intellectual adventure. Her guidance and friendship nurture my confidence as a scholar that I could not otherwise obtain. This project, and my career as a comparatist, would have been truly impossible without her. I am equally and infinitely indebted to Elizabeth DeLoughrey, who introduced me to the literary worlds of the Indigenous Pacific and new ways of looking at postcolonial literature environmentally and tidalectically.     TEACH UYGHUR PROJECT EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH DOCUMENT UYGHUR AMERICAN ASSOCIATION / NOVEMBER 2020 Who are the Uyghurs? The Uyghurs are a Turkic, majority Muslim ethnic group indigenous to Central Asia. The Uyghur homeland is known to Uyghurs as East Turkistan, but is officially known and internationally recognized as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. Due to the occupation of their homeland by the Qing Dynasty of China and the colonization of East Turkistan initiated by the Chinese Communist Party, many Uyghurs have fled abroad. There are several hundred thousand Uyghurs living in the independent Central Asian states of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, as well as a large diaspora in Turkey and in Europe. There are and estimated 8,000 to 10,000 Uyghurs in the United States. The Uyghur people are currently being subjected to a campaign of mass incarceration, mass surveillance, forced labor, population control, and genocide, perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). About the Uyghur American Association (UAA) Established in 1998, the Uyghur American Association (UAA) is a non-partisan organization with the chief goals of promoting and preserving Uyghur culture, and supporting the right of Uyghur people to use peaceful, democratic means to determine their own political futures. Based in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area, the UAA serves as the primary hub for the Uyghur diaspora community in the United States. About the "Teach Uyghur Project" Education is a powerful tool for facilitating change. The goal of this project is to encourage teachers to teach about Uyghurs, and to persuade schools, and eventually state legislatures, to incorporate Uyghurs into primary and secondary school curriculum.

These students add a great deal of cultural and intellectual diversity to college campuses, but they also bring racial stereotypes that can affect cross-racial interaction as well as campus climate. Forty-seven interviews with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean graduate and undergraduate international students were conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles, regarding these students’ racial stereotypes and how contact with diverse others challenged or reinforced these stereotypes over time. Results indicated that a majority of students had racial hierarchies, which affected with whom they roomed, befriended, and dated. American media images and a lack of cross-cultural/racial interaction in home countries led to negative views toward African-Americans and Latinos. Positive cross- racial interactions, diversity courses, and living on-campus did change negative stereotypes; however, a lack of opportunities to interact with racial out-groups, international and domestic student balkanization, and language issues led to stereotype ossification in some cases. This research shows that there is a need for policy and programmatic changes at the college level that promote international and domestic student interaction.

The experience of migration has been a reality for many years for these Dias- pora Uyghurs. They reside in about 50 different countries around the world, but two locales where Uyghurs reside, Turkey and the US, will be the focus of this paper. First, I will describe the migrations to Turkey—when, why and how they were treated. Then I will focus on the US. Following that, I will describe and analyze the differing experiences of the various waves of migrants in light of five topics. The first topic is religion, where I will compare the traditional dichotomy of migration to a Muslim and/or a non-Muslim state, the Dār al- Islām and Dār al-Kufr. The second topic will be the issue of law and the imple- mentation of changing laws during the periods of migration. The third topic is society, specifically the integration of migrants into their new home cultures. The fourth is residence, which encompasses both legal and illegal means of staying or residing in a country and how this impacts the fifth topic, citizen- ship.

New Zealanders like buying used cars (mainly direct import from Japan) due to their affordability and reputation of good condition of the Japanese car. It has been mentioned for many years that Chinese ethnic group is not only one of the largest immigrants in NZ but also one of the most attractive customer groups in NZ market. This research aims to identify what are the NZ Chinese customers’ preferences and perceptions in purchasing Japanese used vehicles and how the used car dealers in NZ can successfully attract and convince their Chinese customers to purchase from them. Based on the survey results, Chinese customers agreed that price, fuel efficiency as well as style and appearance are all the important factors when they decide which Japanese vehicles to buy. Other than that, used car dealers with good reputation as well as friends and family recommendations are also some of the important factors for Chinese customers in helping them to select the right seller to purchase their Japanese used vehicles.     U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad On December 7, 2016, Governor Branstad announced that he had accepted the nomination from President-elect Donald Trump to serve as Ambassador of the United States to the People’s Republic of China. He was confirmed by the Senate on May 22, 2017, and was sworn in on May 24, 2017. Ambassador Terry Branstad was born, raised and educated in Iowa. A native of Leland, Branstad was elected to the Iowa House in 1972, ’74 and ’76, and elected as Iowa’s lieutenant governor in 1978. Branstad was Iowa’s longest-serving governor, from 1983 to 1999. As the state’s chief executive, he weathered some of Iowa’s worst economic turmoil, during the farm crisis of the ‘80s, while helping lead the state’s resurgence to a booming economy in the ‘90s. At the end of his tenure, Iowa enjoyed record employment, an unprecedented $900 million budget surplus, and the enactment of historic government overhauls that led to greater efficiencies in state government. As a result of Governor Branstad’s hands-on, round-the-clock approach to economic development, Iowa’s unemployment rate went from 8.5 percent when he took office to a record low 2.5 percent by the time he left in 1999. Following his four terms as governor, Branstad served as president of Des Moines University (DMU). During his 6-year tenure, he was able to grow the university into a world-class educational facility. Its graduates offer health care in all 50 states and in nearly every Iowa county.

    Chapter 11 The Cultural Fabrication of Identity 1851-1928 Words such as ‘race’, ‘ethnicity’, ‘culture’, ‘religion’ and ‘identity’ are caught up, in 19th and 20th century usage, with concepts such as ‘citizenship’ and ‘nationality’. In earlier times, in Europe, the words ‘Christian’ and ‘Christendom’ might also have been added in trying to define an individual. In China, for more than a thousand years, ‘Confucian’ and perhaps ‘Buddhist” and ‘Daoist’ probably performed a function not unlike that of ‘Christian’ in Europe. Cheong’s life is a case study of an ethnic Chinese whose adult identity was shaped outside China by a different set of cultural influences to those that would have applied if he had lived out his life in Guangdong Province, or in the other centres of the Chinese Diaspora. He differed from most diaspora Chinese in that his family, as a result of his father’s conversion to Christianity in 1860, and his subsequent work as a Presbyterian catechist, provided educational and other opportunities that were rare among his ethnic contemporaries in Australia. It is a commonplace to observe that migration brings about more than just a generational change in the children of immigrants. Few Chinese families, and fewer Chinese children, migrated to Australia during the 19th century. Although evidence is scanty, it is a reasonable estimate that less than twenty families emigrated from China to Victoria and the number is probably less than that. The majority of ‘Chinese’ children identified in the various Victorian census collections were of mixed origins, usually with a Chinese father and a Chinese mother.

Compare with many other studies on ethnic groups in China, Hakka study and research is still in her early childhood. This despite Hakka is one of the longest existing groups of people in China. Uncertainty within the ethnicity and origin of Hakka people are among the topics that will be discussed in the following chapters. This thesis intends to give an introduction in the nature and origin of Hakka identity and to figure out whether it can be concluded that Hakka identity is fluid and depending on situations and surroundings. In that case, when do the Hakka people consider themselves as Han Chinese and when do they consider themselves as Hakka? And what are the reasons for this fluidness? Three cases in China serve as the foundation for this text. By exploring three different areas where Hakka people are settled, I hope this text can shed a light on the reasons and nature of changes in identity for Hakka people and their ethnic consciousness as well as the diversities and sameness within Hakka people in various settings and environments Conclusions that are given here indicate that Hakka people in different regions do varies in large degree when it comes to consciousness of their ethnicity and background.
