Portland Portland Winemakers Club Winemakers Club August 2016 Monthly Rant Scheduled Meetings January 9, 2016 Annual Gala – Archer Winery; 4-9 PM January 20, 2016 Crush Talk / Planning February 17, 2016 Bordeaux Tasting March 16, 2016 At a recent ETS seminar I went to along with Ken Stinger, the speaker talked Speaker: Curtis Patience about a study they had just completed on so-called native yeasts in the on distilling Brandy & Grappa. winemaking process. 6 wineries participated in a multi-year study: Ken Wright Cellars, Beaux Frères, Bethel Heights Vineyard, Cristom Vineyards, Penner April 20, 2016 Barrel / Carboy Sample Ash Wine Cellars and NW Wine Co. They experimented with allowing native Tasting yeast (those present in the vineyard) to run the fermentation on their own fruit as well as fruit from other vineyards in the study, and also ran the same with April 23, 2016 Tour: Patricia Green inoculations of commercial cultured yeasts as controls. They results were Cellars quite a surprise to everyone involved. In most cases, in the non-inoculated May 18, 2016 batches the native yeast was only barely present in the must at the end of Faults & Flaws primary, and even if it had started out as the dominant strain its population June 15, 2016 dropped off steeply by mid-fermentation, presumably contributing only Speaker: Tom Feller, marginally to the resulting wine’s character. In many cases the commercial winemaker from Artisanal yeast inoculations became the dominant and final strains, but curiously not Wine Cellars. always. The real shocker was that a large number of the musts showed the June 26, 2016 dominant yeast present to be a previously used (but discontinued) Portland Winemakers commercial yeast.

  • Pinotfile Vol 11 Issue 19
A Sip of Pinot is Worth a 1000 words Volume 11, Issue 19 February 20, 2018 What Do You Prefer in Oregon Pinot Noir: Double or Triple Digit? Oregon experienced the greatest increase in direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales of all wine-producing regions in the U.S. in 2017 with a 31 percent gain according to an annual report by Wines & Vines magazine and Sovos. Oregon’s DTC wine shipments have increased 214 percent since 2012, with more than half of that volume due to Pinot Noir. Much of this increase is said to be due to tasting room sales. The Wines & Vines report also noted that the average price per bottle increased in Oregon by 2.8% to $39.16 in 2017. I looked at the average price per bottle of all Oregon Pinot Noirs I reviewed from the 2005 to 2014 vintages. My data show an average bottle price increase from $40 in 2005 to $48 in 2014, a gain of 20%. Along with the rise in average bottle price, there was an increase in the number of bottles of Oregon Pinot Noir I reviewed from the 2005 through 2014 vintages priced at $70 and above of approximately 33%. The growth rate by price point of Oregon wines exceeds all other wine producing regions of the world as shown by the 52 week change ending December 2, 2017: It was only a few years ago that it was rare to find Oregon Pinot Noirs priced above $70 and extremely rare to find Oregon Pinot Noirs priced at triple digits.

Awards & Accolades Vuylsteke Family-FAMILY FOUNDERS AWARD- Oregon State Wine Industry Recognition Awards ~ Pinot Gris ~ Wine Enthusiast Magazine-“Oak Knoll’s Pinot Gris is a sturdy, steady expression of the grape’s main strengths. Vintage in and vintage out, the wine has plenty of ripe apple and pear fruit flavors, with citrusy highlights and a splash of refreshing acidity.” Santé Magazine August 2015 - “Clean and crisp, with aromas of green apple, pear, Meyer lemon, and limestone. Refreshing on the palate, with white peach and apricot notes over crisp lemon and minerals. Smooth and lush on the finish, with great acid/fruit balance.” Great value. Dan Berger Vintage Experiences August 2015 – “Stylish fruit of Kiwi/tropical fruit with hints of tea and minerals. An extra year in the bottle has helped broaden the mid-palate” Wine Enthusiast Magazine April 2014 - 89 points – “Spicy pear and Yellow-apple fruit flavors roll through this well-structured Pinot Gris. The relatively low alcohol, high acidity and threshold-level residual sugar give it both texture and tangy vitality.” Best Buy Wine & Spirits Magazine June 2014 - 91 points – “With its initial scents of tale and citrus pith, the Meyer lemon richness of flavor comes as a surprise. With plenty of nerve and energy, this has the lift and cut to pair with a plate of roast oysters.” Best Buy Great Northwest Wine Competition 2015 Silver Medal San Francisco International Wine Competition 2015 Silver Medal Pacific Rim Wine Competition 2015 Silver Medal ~ Pinot Noir ~ Santé Magazine August 2015 - “Aromas of black cherry, red currant, and ripe raspberry, with floral, spice, sandalwood and hints of earthy minerals.
