Academic Dress The origins of academic dress date back to the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries when universities in England were taking form. The scholars were also clerics and thus adopted robes similar to those of their monastic orders. Caps were a necessity in the drafty buildings and capes with hoods were needed for warmth. In the United States, the use of academic dress has been continuous since colonial times. A uniform system was not widespread, however, until about 1895, when the well-defined dress code was adopted by nearly all institutions of higher education.
