VS. Naipaul: A Bibliographical Update (198 7-94) KELVIN JARVIS JLHIS IS A bibliographical update of my V. S. Naipaul: A Selective Bibliography with Annotations: 195J-198J, covering the period 1987-94. Since 1 g87 (when An Enigma of Arrival: A Novel in Five Sections appeared), Naipaul has published three books—A Turn in the South ( 1989), India: A Million Mutinies Now ( 1990), and A Way in the World ( 1994)—and more than 18 substantial pieces, in addition to delivering various lectures and acceptance speeches. This checklist is arranged in six parts. Part I contains Naipaul's most recent writings and comments, listed under three head• ings: published books, articles, and interviews, with entries given chronologically. Part II covers recent bibliographical listings of his work. Part III includes 16 full-length books written about him. Part PV lists articles on him in books, reference volumes, journals, and magazines. Part V has book reviews and critical studies of his individual books. And Part VI itemizes doctoral theses exclu• sively or partly on him. Conference papers have featured prominently in the spate of attention Naipaul continues to generate; these papers are usu• ally quite elusive to trace, particularly if they are not published collectively and within a reasonably short time frame. Thus this checklist omits offerings on Naipaul from conferences and all foreign-language citations. It also excludes newspaper articles with imprints prior to 1987. The Enigma of Arrival spans Naipaul's life in England and echoes a finality in his writing career. The protagonist of this novel writes: "with time passing, I felt mocked by what I had already done; it seemed to belong to a time of vigour, now past for good. -

It is all tiresome and repetitious. Edward W.Said The Man and the Prize : The announcement of the 2001 Nobel Laureate for Literature in October that year elicited the kind of reaction that was predictable, given the reputation and the choice, that of Sir Vidhiadar Surajparasad Naipaul. Of Indian ancestry, V.S. Naipaul is a grandchild of Hindu Brahmins who found their way to the Caribbean island of Trinidad as indentured labourers to escape the grinding poverty of Utterpradesh. Naipaul’s was just one of a stream of families that were encouraged to migrate to the West Indies from the former British colonies of India and Chinese enclaves in Mainland China. Slavery had been abolished in the British Empire in 1832 and the former African slaves were no longer available to the sugarcane plantations and labour had to be sought from somewhere. In their natural ingenuity the British devised the new institution of indentured labour, which was really a new euphemism for a new form of servitude. Whereas the slaves were forcibly repatriated against their will, the new indentured labourers had the carrot of landownership dangled in front of them, to lure them to places they had no idea of. The new immigrants added a new dimension to an already complex racial situation, by adding the Asian layer to the Carib, European and African admixtures created by Alternatives: Turkish Journal of International Relations, Vol.2, No.3&4, Fall&Winter 2003 243 waves of migration. -

Appendix A: Naipaul’s Family, A House for Mr Biswas and The Mimic Men Naipaul’s fiction makes imaginative use of actual people. His father Seepersad (1906–53) is the model for Mr Biswas. After Seepersad’s father died when he was six years old, Seepersad and his impoverished mother became dependent on his mother’s sister (Tara of Biswas) and her wealthy husband (Ajodha) who owned rum shops, taxis and other busi- nesses. After some schooling Seepersad became a sign-painter; he painted a sign for the general store connected to Lion House (Hanuman House in Biswas) owned by the Capildeos (the Tulsis) of Chaguanas and married Bropatie Capildeo (Shama). Although his seven children were born in Lion House he usually resided elsewhere. After he had painted advertising signs for the Trinidad Guardian (the Sentinel in Biswas), the editor allowed him to submit articles, then hired him as a reporter. As Seepersad had a highly developed sense of humour his reports and interviews made him well known. After several moves Seepersad became the newspaper’s Chaguanas correspondent but lived by himself in a wooden house away from Lion House until he had a mental collapse – possibly influenced by his resig- nation from the paper after the editor had been fired and its policy changed, and possibly by a fierce quarrel with the very orthodox Hindu Capildeos about religious reform. After his nervous breakdown he became an overseer on a Capildeo estate (Green Vale) and then a shopkeeper (The Chase). He rejoined the Guardian, and moved to Port of Spain where for ten years he lived in various houses owned by the Capildeos before acquiring his own house (the Sikkim Street house). -

V.S. Naipaul, The Masque of Africa: Glimpses of African Belief (Picador, 2010) It is many years since we have had a major work of non-fiction from Naipaul. Since Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions Among the Converted Peoples was published in 1998, there have been some collections of letters and essays, the desolate novels Half a Life (2001) and Magic Seeds (2003), and two rather introspective memoirs, Reading and Writing (2000) and A Writer’s People (2007). I was beginning to think that, in his eighth decade, he had given up travelling with a view to writing the major works which had become the principal channel for his creative energies. But I was wrong: The Masque of Africa is a big, idiosyncratic travel book in the tradition which began with The Middle Passage (1962) and continued through his career with such books as Among the Believers (1981), A Turn in the South (1989) and India: A Million Mutinies Now (1990), gradually displacing fiction (or at any rate the conventional novel) as his most significant contribution to letters. Naipaul’s theme in The Masque of Africa is African belief. He visits six countries: Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Gabon and South Africa. As his subtitle implies, it is not intended as a comprehensive survey of African religion. Islam features occasionally; Christianity a little more often, sometimes because it is found coexisting in an uneasy relationship with indigenous African beliefs. It is an unapologetically personal view, and, as always with Naipaul, the process of seeking information is part of the story, as well as the way his ideas are challenged by what he discovers: I had a romantic idea of the earth religions. -

As citizens of the fin-de-siècle tapped their way through the global fog that surrounded them, into the third millennium, all they knew for certain was that an era of histoiy had ended. Naipaul's works have focused on extremes that have shaped the age, from colonialism and its persistence in the mentality of marginalized peoples of former European empires, to the disorder of decolonization in newly independent states in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, to the ideologies of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, whether Black Power in the West Indies, Peronism in South America, Mobutism in Africa, or Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East. Two recent novels, TheEnigma of Arrival ( 1987) and A Way in the World ( 1994), although recalling previous works, depart from them in important ways and occupy a new space that could be termed fin de siècle with its particular sense of ending, mood, and moral quality. These novels emphasize memory's power to reach be• yond the shortsightedness of the times and to reinterpret and understand anew in the face of fracture and breakdown in today's postcolonial, multicultural societies. They are fin de siècle not in the negative connotation of excess and decadence, but rather in a neutral sense of a transition period in which endings and beginnings are mixed together. -

It examines the structure of their internal relations and the practice of self-reference evident in his work. It explores the way that A House for Mr Biswas alludes to his father’s works: the novel not only describes family relations, but, as a tribute from son to father, is an aspect of them. It contrasts his non-fictional account of family history in "Prologue to an Autobiography", and that of his brother Shiva Naipaul in Fireflies. The narrative technique of his article on Michael X is compared to that of his novel Guerrillas. The novel’s use of the outsider’s perspective is seen as indebted to Conrad’s method in Heart of Darkness. -

A HOUSE FOR MR. BISWAS REAder’s Guide V.S. NAIPAUL V.S. Naipaul immigrant culture, Naipaul uses his childhood to frame one of his classic novels, A House for Mr. Biswas. His maternal grandparents were part of a wave of indentured laborers who left India to work in Trinidad’s vast sugarcane fields. The family eventually acquired wealth and status through Naipaul’s grandfather, an influential “pundit” or Hindu scholar. They became landowners and Naipaul and his siblings moved several times much like the Biswas family. Two of their homes—a large residence in Chauguanas called “Lion House” and another home in the capital of Port of Spain—were models for Hanuman House and the Tulsi’s city residence, respectively. And, as was custom in Hindu families, Naipaul’s father lived with his wife’s extended family in those homes. Middle- class Indian families considered education as the route to prosperity, so Naipaul, like Anand Biswas, was groomed to attend the island’s best secondary (high school), Queen’s Royal College. Naipaul’s father, Seepersad, was a second-generation Indo-Trinidadian, a sign painter who wanted to be a creative writer but ended up a newspaper reporter for the Trinidad Guardian in Port of Spain. In part because his son sympathized with his literary ambitions, and because his modest accomplishments were engulfed by his in-law’s success, Seepersad’s life became the main inspiration for A House for Mr. Biswas, which traces protagonist Mohun Biswas’s tortured path to home ownership and personal freedom.
