Exeter Livestock Centre Market Report EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT Friday 20th April Store Stock Market EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD 01392 251261 [email protected] www.kivells.com 659 STORE CATTLE, STIRKS & BEEF BREEDING STOCK – 10AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Steers to £1395 Heifers to £1275 The better weather looked to encourage greater numbers forward on Friday and with ‘turnout’ time coming to most area’s demand was as strong as we have seen of late. Top priced steers rose to £1395 for a smashing Simmental (25m) from April Hayden of Kingsbridge with a South Devon (23m) off the same farm selling for £1305 and further bunches of Simmental bullocks (24m) to £1225 and £1210. A grand Angus steer (25m) from Graham Tancock, Broadclyst sold well at £1340 as did Limousin steers (21m) at £1285 from G Woodman of Chulmleigh and £1280 (23m) from David & Mary Stark of Denbury. An eye catching pen of five South Devon steers (28m) from David Allen up from Probus fetched £1245 a piece whilst a trio of Charolais sorts (22m) from Chris Bailey, Iddesleigh saw £1200 a life. No really forward Blue bullocks on offer but very decent grazing sorts (18m) from James & Naomi Law, Broadhempston drew £1085. Later born steers from Steve & Anne Dennis of Inwardleigh looked good money at £1060 for a single Limousin (15m) whilst their bunch of four slightly younger cattle (13m) with the same comments hit £960 apiece. Holstein Friesian steers (25m) topped at £1050 for John Simmons of Poltimore, John also headed the heifers section with a smart Charolais (25m) reaching £1275. Simmental females (25m) saw £1265 for April Hayden with Blue’s (22m) to £1225 for RJ & MB Brown of Woodbury and Limousin’s (24m) reached £1150 for David & Mary Stark. Angus heifers (24m) again from John Simmons attained £1065. Younger heifers from Paul Robinson, Lawhitton drew £800 for three super Limousin and Blues closely followed by a lovely group of six Blue cross heifers (15m) from Will & Allison Clack of Kenn at £795 apiece. 225 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS – 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935 Steers to £855 Heifers to £735 Weather conditions switching the farm mind set of some that said a good crown present ensuing a strong trade for the cracking entry present. David Pyle of North Tawton back again with a smaller line up, this week topping at £855 for Limousin cross steers (7m), Matthew Wreyford of Blackawton achieved £845 for strong Parthenaise cross steers (12m) with Blues steers a little younger attaining £790. Phil Hutchings of Chagford showed quality Charolais crosses which topped at £845 (13m), South Devon steers from Tom Pollard of North Bovey hit £825 (12m) with others being younger achieving £795. Bruce Ellett of Exmouth showed smart Charolais crosses which hit £780, with his Devon and Angus steers realising £770. Strong Angus steers from BW Dymond of Awliscombe attained £765 whilst a smashing entry from SR & SM Crocker of Lewdown saw Charolais steers (7m) realised £760 and £750. LJ & JM Bradford of Iddesleigh topped at £750 for Limousin cross steers (12m), with Geoffrey Tapp of Rackenford attaining the same for well presented Hereford cross steers (9m). Heifers continued with a good trade topping at £735 for Charolais crosses from SR & SM Crocker (x2), Sim heifers from Geoffrey Tapp & (10m) attained the same, further Sim crosses (12m) from David Pyle hit £730, Paul and Steve Bowden of Drewsteignton realised £705 for Charolais crosses (11m), BW Dymond hit £700 for Angus heifers, South Devon heifers from Charlie Chick Lewdown, looked a cracking trade reaching £670 (11m), Blue heifers from Andrew Lawrence of Helston achieved £665, Bruce Ellett levelled out at £660 and £650 for Charolais cross heifers, whilst Phil Hutchings attained £650 again for Charolais cross heifers (12m). Native calves saw smart Aberdeen Angus 1 50 50 bulls to £375 & £345 for Messrs AG & GD Bond & Holstein / Friesian 12 70 30 Son and £280 for Messrs Bampfield Farms of Barnstaple. Hereford bulls to £240 for Malcolm Harris of Kingsbridge. Heifers topped at £315 for a Simmental heifer for Messrs C & EC Mills who sold another at £295. British Blue heifers to £302 for Messrs KF & LW Mitcham of Axminster with others to £285 for David & Adrian Cole of Bradninch. Aberdeen Angus heifers topped at £315 for Phil Sanders of Cullompton. Friesians to £70 for Messrs KF & LW Mitcham. 1581 SHEEP – 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 161 ORPHAN LAMBS Another sizable sale of 161 orphan lambs (bringing our total sold so far this year to over 1700!) sold to the usual crowd of buyers at a level price. Forward sorts to £23 (x9) for Lyn Loosemore of Yeoford, £22 for both Brian Lavis of Bridestowe (x2) and H Swan of Shaftesbury and £20 for numerous vendors. Samller lambs from £8 to £16. Av. £13.84. 498 STORE HOGGS Hogg numbers are certainly bringing to tighten with all but 500 store hoggs selling to a slightly stronger trade reaching £113.50, £107.50 (x2), £104 & £99 (x2) for the best of a good run from Micky Tylor of Helston. Other nice hoggs to £108 for Paul Vanstone of Bratton Clovelly, £105 for WH & M Tucker & Son of Brentor and £104 for Colin Trant of Kingsbridge. Farming hoggs from £80 to £100 depending on size and only the real tail enders less than £50. Av. £88. 119 GRAZING EWES Grazers topped at £108.50 again for Micky Tylor followed by D Saunders of Belstone at £107.50 and £105 for Stephen & Susan Sallis of Jacobstowe. Other medium ewes looking well sold from £88 to £99 and every bit as dear as our Monday sale. 339 EWES & 464 LAMBS (803 LIVES) 339 ewes with their 464 lambs were an ever so slightly dearer trade with doubles reaching £225 & £191 for nice 4T age ewes with month old lambs from K Mowll of Dawlish, £210 for similar with slightly younger lambs from Nicky Cleave of Bratton Fleming, £207 for FM Suffolk cross doubles from MG & SR Kingdon of Swimbridge and £206 for Suffolk cross young ewes from Milborne Wick Farms of Sherborne. Singles to £168 again for K Mowll with similar comments to her doubles, nice Mule Hogg singles looking value against a few week’s from JA &YJ Hopkins of Brent Knoll at £148 and a strong double penning of flock aged singles from TE & J Middleton & Son of Ashreigney achieved £144. Others singles regularly £120 to £135 and doubles regularly £150 to £185. 140 PIGS – 10.15AM Auctioneer: James Morrish 07814 010133 Another useful entry of 140 saw some regular consignments missing as now the fine weather has at last arrived there is important work to do on the land. That said, there was no shortage of interest for the prime pigs which saw a top call of £136 for the best pen of heavyweights from Richard Knox of Whiddon Down going off to their new home near Tiverton. Richard & Vikcy Gibbins of Poltimore saw somewhat of a bidding war for their first-quality prime pigs topping at £127 going to Bristol and £125 going to Dorset. Nigel & Sandra Tope of Blackawton sold their first pen of superb finished pigs at £126 going to Plymouth, with others at £119. Medium weights also saw a very strong trade with Messrs Bament at £100 (x3) aswell as Timmy Stockwell of Kingsbridge also hit £100 for his team of six. Other quality lightweights came in from Messrs Turner of Coombe Martin at £91. Numbers in the sow pens were quite disappointing with the trade no better. Top of the day was £103 for Timmy Stockwell with Richard Dunning close up at £88. Although only a small number of bulls forward top of the day was 4400gns for “Trenestrall Miner” a 2016 bull by Trenestrall Isobar from Messrs WF Palmer & Son Truro who also sold another bull at 2900gns. A sweet yearling heifer “Polgoda Nigela” by Davally Impeccable from David & Bernie Stacey of St Austell, she sold at 1150gns. Commercial bulls sold to an exceptional trade with a purebred Charolais bull at £3350 for Messrs AW & AR Gale of Teigngrace. Two smart Pedigree Charolais bulls from Alan Cottle of Barnstaple to £3300 & £2500. A smart Blonde bull sold at £2000 for Messrs RL Davis & Son of St Ives.
