On 10 December 1986 we submitted to you our Reports Nos. 521 and 522 following our consideration of the review of the City of Exeter's boundary with the Districts of East Devon and Teignbridge in the County of Devon, and of part of the parish review of the District of East Devon. 2. In our Report No. 522 we proposed the realignment of the boundary between the Parishes of Woodbury and Clyst St. George in order to place the village of Ebford within Clyst. St. George. \3e made this proposal under section 51 of the Local Government Act 1972 in advance of our other proposals on the East Devon parish review, with the request that the proposal be implemented concurrently with those on the District of Exeter boundary review if they were implemented. In your Department's letter of 3 April 1987 we were informed of your decision to make an Order under section 51(2) of the Act giving effect to the proposal set out in our Report No. 522 without modification. 3. We considered the District Council's parish review report, the Council's Working Party's report and associated comments, in accordance with the requirements of section 48(9) of the Act, together with the enclosed representations which were received direct, and which are listed in the attached Schedule A.

    Greater Exeter Strategic Plan Issues Report Summary of Responses Introduction The councils of East Devon, Exeter, Mid Devon and Teignbridge consulted on an “Issues” paper in February 2017 designed to stimulate debate early in the process of preparing the Greater Exeter Strategic Plan. The questions were deliberately broad and non-specific, and therefore the comments received have inevitably been wide ranging. It is therefore appropriate to publish a reasonably full summary of the responses, rather than to attempt to bring them all together into a more general summary which could lose some of the finer points raised. The full responses can be found at https://www.gesp.org.uk/consultations/issues/ It is not currently possible to provide a full response to each comment at this stage, in advance of the publication of the draft plan. This summary is therefore an interim one, pending further work on the plan. However, the comments will be taken into account during the preparation of the draft GESP and a fuller response provided with the draft’s publication. Therefore, any point made has been noted and is being actively considered, even in the absence of a specific comment. A revised summary will be published with a fuller set of notes/responses alongside the draft GESP.     ‘A Master in the Art’: Harry Hems and St Peter’s Revelstoke, Noss Mayo, Devon by Sue Andrew Extracted with permission from Ecclesiology Today Issues 55 & 56 2017, published May 2018 ‘A Master in the Art’: Harry Hems and St Peter’s Revelstoke, Noss Mayo, Devon Sue Andrew SCULPTOR AND CARVER Harry Hems (1842–1916) Having spent many years gazing established the highly-prolific and internationally-renowned upward at medieval roof bosses, Sue Andrew has come to appreciate Ecclesiastical Art Works in Exeter in the late nineteenth century, carvings at lower level and later date, yet he has been comparatively little studied. In part this may be especially the late nineteenth- and because the archive of original documents from his business was early twentieth-century work of Harry almost certainly destroyed when his sons retired in 1938,1 but Hems of Exeter. letters from Hems to a patron concerning the furnishing and decoration of one particular church built in 1880–82 – St Peter’s Revelstoke, Noss Mayo, Devon – do survive.2 These letters, together with the rich and varied carvings at the church, and contemporary photographs of the work taken at Hems’s studios, afford us a rare and fascinating glimpse of the man and his methods (Fig. 1). Carving a career – the early years of Harry Hems Hems was born in Islington, and seemed destined to spend his working life in the cutlery business, his mother’s family being the Wostenholms, owners of a firm of highly successful cutlers based in Sheffield. An apprenticeship with the firm did not suit, however, although Hems did adopt as his personal motto the firm’s trademark: I.X.L.

(Fields between Winslade Park and lane from Kenniford Cross to Clyst St George) Clyst St Mary. The Devon Countryside Access Forum (DCAF) is a local access forum under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CRoW Act). Its statutory remit is to give independent advice “as to the improvement of public access to land in the area for the purposes of open-air recreation and the enjoyment of the area…” The DCAF currently has fifteen members, appointed by Devon County Council, who represent the interests of landowners/managers, access users and other relevant areas of expertise such as conservation and tourism. The timing of this consultation did not coincide with a meeting of the Devon Countryside Access Forum. The comments are in accordance with advice previously provided by the Forum and the response will be on the agenda for formal approval at the next meeting on 9 October. The DCAF supports in principle this section of the aspirational Clyst Valley Trail. A multi- use route is welcomed and will provide new sustainable transport links and recreational access opportunities for walkers, dog walkers, cyclists, disabled users and horse riders. The link to the Exe Estuary Trail and potentially northwards, in time, to Killerton will deliver an important and very popular trail.

    For the People of Modbury & Brownston Volume 18, Issue 233 September 2018 MODBURY WI - JANET WINS THE CUP Janet Thomas was the first winner of the trophy in the new WI Craft Class at this year’s Modbury Fruit and Produce Show. Janet submitted a bag she had woven in a complex checked pattern and made up herself, which was a real tour de force and a very worthy winner. Our new programme starts in September after an August meeting break and we will meet on the first Tuesday evening of the month from now on, which we hope will encourage new members as Friday evenings have proved problematic in the past. The next meeting will take place at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 4th September in the MARS Pavilion, Queen Elizabeth II Recreation Ground, Chatwell Lane, Modbury when the speaker will be hypotherapist Grace Jones from Elegant Thinking. In addition to our monthly meetings we have book, craft, walking and cinema going groups as well as visits to places of interest in the locality.
