Base64 Character Encoding and Decoding Modeling Isnar Sumartono1, Andysah Putera Utama Siahaan2, Arpan3 Faculty of Computer Science,Universitas Pembangunan Panca Budi Jl. Jend. Gatot Subroto Km. 4,5 Sei Sikambing, 20122, Medan, Sumatera Utara, Indonesia Abstract: Security is crucial to maintaining the confidentiality of the information. Secure information is the information should not be known to the unreliable person, especially information concerning the state and the government. This information is often transmitted using a public network. If the data is not secured in advance, would be easily intercepted and the contents of the information known by the people who stole it. The method used to secure data is to use a cryptographic system by changing plaintext into ciphertext. Base64 algorithm is one of the encryption processes that is ideal for use in data transmission. Ciphertext obtained is the arrangement of the characters that have been tabulated. These tables have been designed to facilitate the delivery of data during transmission. By applying this algorithm, errors would be avoided, and security would also be ensured. Keywords: Base64, Security, Cryptography, Encoding I. INTRODUCTION Security and confidentiality is one important aspect of an information system [9][10]. The information sent is expected to be well received only by those who have the right. Information will be useless if at the time of transmission intercepted or hijacked by an unauthorized person [7]. The public network is one that is prone to be intercepted or hijacked [1][2]. From time to time the data transmission technology has developed so rapidly. Security is necessary for an organization or company as to maintain the integrity of the data and information on the company.

Please do not take this text as a literal translation, but as a help to understand the standard GB 18030-2000. Insertions in brackets [] are used throughout the text to indicate corresponding sections of the published Chinese standard. Thanks to Markus Scherer (IBM) and Ken Lunde (Adobe Systems) for initial critical reviews of the text. SUMMARY, EXPLANATIONS, AND REMARKS: CHINESE NATIONAL STANDARD GB 18030-2000: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY – CHINESE IDEOGRAMS CODED CHARACTER SET FOR INFORMATION INTERCHANGE – EXTENSION FOR THE BASIC SET (信息技术-信息交换用汉字编码字符集 Xinxi Jishu – Xinxi Jiaohuan Yong Hanzi Bianma Zifuji – Jibenji De Kuochong) March 17, 2000, was the publishing date of the Chinese national standard (国家标准 guojia biaozhun) GB 18030-2000 (hereafter: GBK2K). This standard tries to resolve issues resulting from the advent of Unicode, version 3.0. More specific, it attempts the combination of Uni- code's extended character repertoire, namely the Unihan Extension A, with the character cov- erage of earlier Chinese national standards. HISTORY The People’s Republic of China had already expressed her fundamental consent to support the combined efforts of the ISO/IEC and the Unicode Consortium through publishing a Chinese National Standard that was code- and character-compatible with ISO 10646-1/ Unicode 2.1. This standard was named GB 13000.1. Whenever the ISO and the Unicode Consortium changed or revised their “common” standard, GB 13000.1 adopted these changes subsequently. In order to remain compatible with GB 2312, however, which at the time of publishing Unicode/GB 13000.1 was an already existing national standard widely used to represent the Chinese “simplified” characters, the “specification” GBK was created.

Some of the most common file formats for digital data used in eScience (CSV, XML, and JSON, for example) are built atop plain text standards. Plain text representations of digital data are often preferred because plain text formats are relatively stable, and they facilitate reuse and interoperability.

This process is prone to failure and usability the web, primarily because of its low cost and compatibility studies suggest that a significant number of users will be un- with any device which allows a user to input text. Yet text is not able to use a password they remember conceptually because universal. Computers must use a character encoding system to convert human-comprehensible writing into bits. We examine they cannot reproduce the precise representation [33]. for the first time the lingering effects of character encoding A further conversion must take place to convert the on the password ecosystem. We report a number of bugs at abstract concept of “text” into a sequence of bits suitable large websites which reveal that non-ASCII passwords are often for computer manipulation. For example, the letter m at the poorly supported, even by websites otherwise correctly sup- beginning of the password above is commonly represented porting the recommended Unicode/UTF-8 character encoding system. We also study user behaviour through several leaked using the eight bits 01101101. This process is known as data sets of passwords chosen by English, Chinese, Hebrew character encoding and, despite decades of work towards and Spanish speakers as case studies. Our findings suggest a universal standard, there remain dozens of schemes in that most users still actively avoid using characters outside of widespread use to map characters into sequences of bits.

Page 1 of 7 AP Computer Science Principles Scoring Guide Review for Quiz 1 The binary number system is the only system flexible enough to allow for representing data other than numbers. It typically takes fewer digits to represent a number in binary when compared to other number systems (for example, the decimal number system) It's impossible to build a computing machine that uses anything but binary to represent numbers It's easier, cheaper, and more reliable to build machines and devices that only have to distinguish between binary states. 3. Which best describes a bit? A binary number, such as 110 A rule governing the exchange or transmission of data between devices. Steps to Replicate: Prerequisite: The Learn environment has converted to Blackboard Annotate. 1. Log into Blackboard Learn as System Administrator 2. Set the Language Pack to a non-English language, such as Arabic, Spanish, Korean, or Japanese 3. Log in as Instructor 4. Navigate to a Course with Assignments 5. Grade any assignment using Blackboard Annotate Expected Behavior: The user interface displays proper characters for the language chosen. Observed Behavior: Symbols such as §, © and ¶, or characters from other languages appear. Symptoms: Incorrect characters appear in the Blackboard Annotate User Interface. Cause: Characters consist of one or more binary bytes indicating a location in a 'codepage' for a specific character encoding, such as CP252 for Arabic. Information regarding the encoding used needs to be sent by the server to the browser for it to use the correct codepage. If an incorrect codepage is used to look up the characters to be displayed, unintelligble characters known as "Mojibake" will appear because the locations in one codepage will not will not necessarily contain the same characters as another.

  • Unicode Characters and UTF-8
Software Design Lecture Notes Prof. Stewart Weiss Unicode and UTF-8 Unicode and UTF-8 1 About Text The Problem Most computer science students are familiar with the ASCII character encoding scheme, but no others. This was the most prevalent encoding for more than forty years. The ASCII encoding maps characters to 7-bit integers, using the range from 0 to 127 to represent 94 printing characters, 33 control characters, and the space. Since a byte is usually used to store a character, the eighth bit of the byte is lled with a 0. The problem with the ASCII code is that it does not provide a way to encode characters from other scripts, such as Cyrillic or Greek. It does not even have encodings of Roman characters with diacritical marks, such as ¦, ¡, ±, or ó. Over time, as computer usage extended world-wide, other encodings for dierent alphabets and scripts were developed, usually with overlapping codes. These encoding systems conicted with one another. That is, two encodings could use the same number for two dierent characters, or use dierent numbers for the same character. A program transferring text from one computer to another would run the risk that the text would be corrupted in the transition. Unifying Solutions In 1989, to overcome this problem, the International Standards Organization (ISO) started work on a universal, all-encompassing character code standard, and in 1990 they published a draft standard (ISO 10646) called the Universal Character Set (UCS). UCS was designed as a superset of all other character set standards, providing round-trip compatibility to other character sets.

  • Unicode Identifiers and Reflection
Unicode Identifiers And Reflection D1953R0 Reply to: [email protected] Audience: SG-7, SG-15 Abstract SG-16 members are looking at extending the basic character set to support Unicode Identifiers. SG-7 is designing tools to convert identifiers to string (as well as the reverse). Therefore it will be necessary to be able to reflect (and reifere) on identifiers containing characters outside of the basic character sets. We explore solutions Unicode Identifiers Extending the basic character set is an area of ongoing research, but the general direction is: ● Based on TR31 ● Specified Normalization of identifiers at compile time (more likely NFC) - to ensure consistent behavior (and mangling) across translation units and implementations. ● Limited to (assumed) UTF-encoded files, because no one wants mojibake in their identifiers The general motivation is not to encourage Unicode characters in identifiers but to ensure a consistent, reliable behavior across platforms. However, the goal of that paper is not specified how Unicode identifiers should work but rather to open a discussion as to how they should be reflected upon. C++ Text Model Primer For people not familiar with the work of SG-16, here is briefly how C++ handle text ● Each token is converted from the “source character encoding” (which is determined by the compiler in an implementation-defined way - GCC and Clang assumes UTF-8 by default while MSVC uses UTF BOMs and user locale to determine the “source character encoding” - Both GCC and MSVC provides flags to let their user override that behavior) ● To the internal character encoding, which is not specified but implied to be a Unicode encoding ● String literals are further converted to the _execution encoding_ whose character set is a subset of the internal character set.
