Neighborhood Prayer Walk Ideas

Why Prayer-walk? Prayer is the primary critical success factor for the advancement of God’s kingdom in this world; therefore, everything we do is contingent upon prayer! During this unique and challenging season due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, God’s commission to us as witnesses is no less urgent. Though we are practicing social distancing as a measure to keep ourselves and others safe, we still have the opportunity to pray as we go on walks with our family or drives to the store. We can literally take our prayers to our city as we pass by neighbors, stores, people, and communities. As part of our adjusted rhythms, let’s engage in intercessory prayer that includes prayer-walking around one of the most strategic places in your life—your home and neighborhood. Being close to a location allows us to pray clearer as we pray nearer. These prayer-walks can be short or long, in your neighborhood, parks, or other places you find yourself. The difference from a normal walk is that we set aside these walks specifically for prayer.

How to Prayer-walk

● If you are not alone, divide your family or group into smaller groups of two or three, so that everyone is able to hear and participate properly.

● Don’t plan a route that is too long or taxing for everyone walking with you. Decide how much spontaneity you want to allow, dependent on how well you know the area.

● How long are you going to spend? One or two hours is usually what is recommended initially for a group of adults. Thirty minutes or so may be more suitable with children.

● Pray as you walk, out loud, eyes open. Pray shorter prayers. Pass it back and forth. Play off of each others’ prayer-focus on a specific need or opportunity, continue on a prayer-theme. Don’t quit your prayer-walking effort too quickly. Persevere in prayer!

● During prayer-walks, when talking to people and explaining what you are doing, just tell them you are followers of Jesus who are visiting (or live in) the community, meeting new people, and praying for God’s blessings for them. You believe in the power of prayer, and ask people if they need prayer.

What to Pray For

● Prayer strengthens Christians, and it brings evangelists to a neighborhood as we pray for the Lord to send laborers into his harvest.

● Pray Scripture. You can carry a copy of God’s word with you (or have it on your phone) as you prayer- walk. Read it out loud. You can take turns, one reading a verse and then another prayer-walker praying a prayer based on the content of that verse. Then, proceed to the next verse and so on. Base your petitions and praise on selected passages. ● Pray in obedience to the Spirit’s leading. Learn to recognize and respond to his voice as you prayer- walk. God’s Spirit may even direct you with ideas of specific prayers. Pray for God to give insight into his specific kingdom plans and purposes for this community and city.

● Pray for God to give you harvest eyes and a spirit of grace and supplication. Ask for boldness and open doors to this community and city. Confess fears, weaknesses, lack of concern for those “outside.”

● Pray for the Christians and churches in the community or area you are walking in. Pray that our homes and church would be ministry centers of the church in our community.

● Pray for the critical needs in the neighborhood you are walking—social, economic, spiritual, etc. Pray for specific streets, houses, and people you meet. Hit the critical intersections and nerve centers with specific prayer.

● Pray that the gospel would be boldly and unashamedly proclaimed and that our church would be a place for the broken, unwanted, and hurting. Pray that Christ will be offered as the only remedy for the very thing we cannot do, make ourselves better or save ourselves.

● Pray that Romans 8:35–39 would become a reality. Pray for yourself, for your family, for your pastors, and for your church. Pray that our hope would be found in Christ and in Christ alone, and that his hope would produce gospel boldness in our lives.

● Pray Matthew 6:10 over your city. Spend this day replacing the word “earth” with the name of your city (e.g., “In ______as it is in heaven.”).

● Pray that the Spirit would weed out the sin in your life that has kept you from living a life on mission. Pray that he would open up opportunities for you to be present and intentional with the gospel in your neighborhood. Pray for your neighbors by name.

● Pray boldly Psalm 33:8 over your city, that the people would stand in awe before him.

● Pray Habakkuk 3:2 over your city, that the Lord’s love, wrath, justice, and mercy would be made known in the city.

● Pray that the Lord would increase our burden for our city. That our love and growth in the gospel would produce a desire to see others saved and grow in their love and understanding of who God is, what he has done, and what he is doing

*These ideas are taken from Northwest Baptist Church of Wauwatosa, WI. and Trevin Wax’s book How To Pray For Your City

Pray for our Nation

Nehemiah 1:4-11 As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. 5 And I said, “O LORD God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father's house have sinned. 7 We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses. 8 Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, 9 but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’ 10 They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. 11 O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.

• Praise God for His faithfulness to us and His love for us that never fails. • Pray for awareness and forgiveness for the sins of this nation. • Praise God for redeeming us by His power and ability, not ours. • Pray for God to give us strength and success in living and leading this nation.

Nehemiah 4:10-15 In Judah it was said, ‘The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.’ 11 And our enemies said, ‘They will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop the work.’ 12 At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times, ‘You must return to us.’ 13 So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people by their clans, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. 14 And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, ‘Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.’ 15 When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work.

• Recognize the challenges that face our nation, and pray for strength and courage to face them. • Remember 2 Timothy 1:7, “7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” Pray for strength, by the Spirit, for our nation to lead by power and love and self-control, not by fear. • Praise God for the blessings He provides for our nation, which allows us to live and serve Him freely.

Nehemiah 6:15-16 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. 16 And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.” • Recognize and praise God for the work He has done and will do through us. • Pray for our nation to follow God’s direction, and achieve great things by God’s power for God’s glory. • Pray for the nations of the world to see the work God can do in our nation, leading them to marvel at God’s greatness.

2 Timothy 2:1-2 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
