Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela was a very important person in the South African anti-apartheid movement having spent twenty-seven years in prison for fighting against the government. He was also the first black South African President from 1994–1999. Apartheid (say: a-part-hite) was the separation of black and white people in South Africa. Early Life Nelson Mandela was named Rolihlahla Mandela when he was born in Mvezo (say: m-vay-zo), South Africa on 18th July 1918. He was given the name Nelson by his teacher at school. He did well at school and went to the University of Fort Hare. However, he was expelled because he joined a student protest. When he returned home, his family told him he they would arrange a marriage for him if he did not return to Fort Hare to finish his degree. Mandela ran away to the city of Johannesburg (say: Joe-han-ez-burg) where he managed to finish his degree through the University of South Africa and eventually became a lawyer. Politics and Prison From 1942, he was becoming more and more involved with politics and by 1944, he helped create the youth section of the African National Congress (ANC), a political party in South Africa. Later, in 1952, he was chosen as the National Volunteer-in-Chief of the Defiance Campaign which was a movement to fight against apartheid. The following years were full of fighting and arrests because of trying to stop apartheid. In 1962, he was arrested again and given a life sentence in 1964. -

The Scatterling Rebecca Alderson The Scatterlings is a body of work that depicts my family. It seeks to share my family’s story, by making a connection between the artwork and the viewer to encourage them to wonder and question my family’s story. The theme was developed through the love of my family and our cultural roots. My family and I were born in Durban, South Africa; we are immigrants and strangers in this country. ‘And we are scatterlings of Africa, On a journey to the stars, Far below we leave forever, Dreams of what we were’ These are the lyrics from a 1982 song, The Scatterlings Of Africa by Johnny Clegg and Juluka. These lyrics represent my family’s journey to Australia leaving behind our family and safety. As the artist the foundation was making my artwork convey my happy family through bright colours and careless brushstroke techniques while making it interchangeable between any race, age or religion and to showcase my family’s story and journey. I began researching various art styles and painting techniques that would convey the right story. I settled on doing an abstract style of painting. The works of Ben Quilty and Andrew Salgado both used broad brushstroke techniques with bold colours. These artists inspired me with my own work so much I practiced and incorporated their styles to develop my own style. The reason for choosing this style is because of the rough yet playful look with lots of texture. Doing abstract techniques meant that I could use vibrant and vivid colours, while light direction and intense brushstrokes assisted in conveying a playful attitude and composition. -

He is a singer, songwriter, dancer, anthropologist and musical activist whose infectious crossover music, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms, has exploded onto the international scene and broken through all the barriers in his own country. In France, where he enjoys a massive following, he is fondly called Le Zulu Blanc – the white Zulu. Over three decades, Clegg has sold over five million albums of his brand of crossover music worldwide. He has wowed vast audiences with his audacious live shows and won a number of national and international awards for his music and his outspoken views on apartheid, perspectives on migrant workers in South Africa and the general situation in the world today. Clegg’s history is as bold, colorful and dashing as the rainbow country which he has called home for more than 40 years. Clegg was born in Bacup, near Rochdale, England, in 1953, but was brought up in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Between his mother (a cabaret and jazz singer) and his step-father (a crime reporter who took him into the townships at an early age), Clegg was exposed to a broader cultural perspective than that available to his peers. -

Prof. Alessandro Scarsella Laureanda Irene Pozzobon Matricola 828267 Anno Accademico 2013 / 2014 ABSTRACT When a system of segregation tries to oppress individuals and peoples, struggle becomes an important part in order to have social and civil rights back. Revolutionary poem-songs are to be considered as part of that struggle. This dissertation aims at offering an overview on how South African poet-songwriters, in particular the white Roger Lucey and the black Mzwakhe Mbuli, composed poem-songs to fight against apartheid. A secondary purpose of this study is to show how, despite the different ethnicities of these poet-songwriters, similar themes are to be found in their literary works. In order to investigate this topic deeply, an interview with Roger Lucey was recorded and transcribed in September 2014. This work will first take into consideration poem-songs as part of a broader topic called ‘oral literature’. Secondly, it will focus on what revolutionary poem-songs are and it will report examples of poem-songs from the South African apartheid regime (1950s to 1990s). Its third part will explore both the personal and musical background of the two songwriters. Part four, then, will thematically analyse Roger Lucey and Mzwakhe Mbuli’s lyrics composed in that particular moment of history. Finally, an epilogue will show how the two songwriters’ perspectives have evolved in the post-apartheid era.
