John Cale, L'avant-Gardiste Du Rock, Revisite Ses Classiques Culture / Culture Il a “contribué” à l'évolution naturelle de la musique John Cale, l'avant-gardiste du rock, revisite ses classiques “Le chemin m'a toujours intéressé plus que la destination”, affirme John Cale, cofondateur du Velvet Underground avec son “frère ennemi” Lou Reed et éternel avant-gardiste du rock, qui revisitera son œuvre de lundi à mercredi à la Philharmonie de Paris. C'est dans un studio de répétition caché dans le labyrinthe d'un immeuble de Los Angeles, que l'artiste gallois de 77 ans à la carrure impressionnante reçoit l'AFP, entouré de ses instruments, piano, guitare et violon avec lesquels il apprit enfant la musique. Féru d'Erik Satie, passionné par le dadaïsme, il parfait sa formation classique auprès du compositeur Aaron Copland à New York, “où une révolution culturelle bat son plein en 1963”. “Tout le monde faisait de la musique, des films, partout dans les rues, les maisons. Je me retrouvais dans le cœur du réacteur artistique”. Rapidement, il fait la rencontre d'un électron nommé Lou Reed et le courant passe immédiatement. “C'était à une fête organisée par une boîte de production de musique classique qui se lançait dans le rock. Lou leur faisait des chansons à la Beach Boys. Il venait d'écrire ‘Venus in Furs’ et ‘Heroine’ et me disait : “Jamais on me laissera enregistrer ça. Ça m'a rendu dingue”, raconte John Cale, qui le convainc de le faire eux-mêmes. Ainsi débute l'aventure Velvet Underground. Au sein du groupe, également composé du bassiste/guitariste Sterling Morrison et de la batteuse Moe Tucker, les atomes crochus laissent vite place à une électrique rivalité. “Mais j'ai tellement appris de lui et lui a tellement appris de moi, qu'il se passait toujours quelque chose à l'arrivée”, souligne-t-il. Leurs premiers concerts font tellement de bruit, que le public n'entend... que du bruit. “En fait, on travaillait énormément ça. Il y avait plein de nuances, de combinaisons intéressantes à explorer. Cette musique ne nous mènerait sûrement nulle part, mais on a sauté à pieds joints dedans”. Le parrain du pop- art Andy Warhol les repère et les produit au sein de la Factory. Il contribue à sa façon à la conception du premier album, The Velvet Underground and Nico, en créant la fameuse pochette à la banane. Insatisfait par le rock. Il impose aussi la présence du mannequin Nico, dont on entend la voix grave sur Femme Fatale, I'll Be Your Mirror et All Tomorrow's Parties. “Andy n'aimait pas notre look. Avec elle, le groupe deviendrait beau. On ne s'en rendait pas compte, mais lui savait très bien ce qu'il faisait”, sourit Cale. “Pourtant on ne voulait surtout pas plaire. Notre musique était déstabilisante. Mais j'étais conscient qu'on créait un son nouveau, unique dans le rock”, assure celui qui quittera toutefois le groupe après White Light/White Heat en 1968. En 1970, John Cale se lance en solo avec Vintage violence, un album pop. Sûrement trop à ses yeux... “Tu veux gagner ta vie et on te dit quoi faire pour ça. La maison de disques voulait que je suive une direction. Je l'ai fait. Je ne le referai plus. On ne peut pas aller loin en prétendant être ce qu'on n'est pas”, insiste l'artiste, qui sort trois ans plus tard son œuvre maîtresse 1919, dans laquelle il fait entrer en osmose rock et classique. “J'étais ce Gallois vivant à Los Angeles, qui se souvenait de toutes ces choses en Europe qui me manquaient. Pure nostalgie”, décrypte son auteur qui réfute l'idée de ne pas être né à la bonne époque. “Devenir un compositeur classique, je savais comment y arriver. Mais j'ai préféré contribuer à l'évolution naturelle de la musique”, répond-il. En parallèle, John Cale prête ses talents d'arrangeur et de producteur aux autres: Iggy Pop, “quelqu'un de très organisé”, pour le premier album avec les Stooges, Patti Smith sur Horses, Brian Eno “qui était je pense aussi insatisfait que moi par le rock”. “J'aime voir chez les autres ce qu'ils ne savent pas d'eux-mêmes. Les musiciens savent ce qu'on attend d'eux, mais pas forcément de quoi ils sont capables. C'est là que le producteur entre en jeu”, explique John Cale, qui admet avoir été frustré d'être plus reconnu pour son travail pour les autres. “On fait des progrès chaque fois qu'on le peut. L'essentiel c'est que je continue de progresser. Il y a un nouvel album qui sort en janvier et j'en suis très content. Il faut toujours respecter sa propre créativité”. AFP.
