  • The Western Screenwriter in Japan: Screenwriting Considerations in Transnational Cinema
The Western Screenwriter in Japan: Screenwriting Considerations in Transnational Cinema by Alexander McAulay Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Media and Communication Bournemouth University May 2017 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with its author and due acknowledgement must always be made of the use of any material contained in, or derived from, this thesis. 2 Alexander McAulay The Western Screenwriter in Japan: Screenwriting Considerations in Transnational Cinema Abstract This PhD investigates the writing of a feature film screenplay for mainstream Japanese-language cinema by a British screenwriter. As a long-term resident of Japan with production credits in Japanese cinema, I have for many years been interested in how to write stories set in Japan that will appeal to domestic and international audiences. The study examines the challenges I face as a Western screenwriter writing a screenplay for Japanese cinema, and how those challenges inform my creative practice, bringing into being a screenplay that is intended to enhance screenwriting craft in mainstream Japanese cinema and provide new knowledge to transnational cinema and screenwriting research. The critical commentary that accompanies the screenplay takes a dialogic approach in practice-led research to explore how various issues emerge for the Western screenwriter in Japanese cinema. These problems are examined with regard to relevant theory, and contextualised in considerations of various films in Japanese-language cinema written by non-Japanese screenwriters. One salient issue is the application of the Hollywood ‘universal’ model of screenwriting to stories about Japan.

  • J-Film Series January 2008
J-Film Series June 2008 Presented by Japan Information & Culture Center, Embassy of Japan (JICC) and Japan Commerce Association of Washington DC (JCAW) After the Rain 雨あがる ©ame agaru production committee Monday June 23 6:30PM After the Rain is the final screenplay written by Akira Kurosawa before his death in 1998. Takashi Koizumi, longtime assistant to Kurosawa, brought the film to life as director of his first feature film. Koizumi did his best to stay true to the vision of Japan’s greatest director. The result is a beautiful, but often overlooked, classic samurai tale. Respecting the model of such timeless films as Sanjuro, Red Beard, and Yojimbo, After the Rain follows another wandering samurai on his travels through the land. The movie is based on a short story by Shugoro Yamamoto. After the Rain features a host of Kurosawa’s leading men, including Akira Terao (AKIRA KUROSAWA’S DREAMS), Yoshiko Miyazaki (RAN), Hisashi Igawa (AKIRA KUROSAWA’S DREAMS), Tatsuya Nakadai (KAGEMUSHA) and Toshiro Mifune’s son, Shiro Mifune. After the Rain won 8 awards at the Awards of the Japanese Academy in 1999 including Best Film, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Screenplay. This presentation will feature a guest appearance by Teruyo Nogami, who assisted Koizumi in directing this film and was involved in the writing of many of Kurosawa’s masterpieces. She and actor Tatsuya Nakadai- who plays Gettan Tsuji in the film - will be visiting the United States for the beginning of a seven-week retrospective on Mr. Nakadai’s career at Film Forum in New York City.

  • After the Rain
After the Rain Dir: Takashi Koizumi, Japan/France, 1999 A review by Shulamit Almog, University of Haifa, Israel After the Rain is Takashi Koizumi's feature film debut, made in 1999, Shoji Ueda and Takao Saito as cinematographers. Akira Kurosawa wrote the screenplay, and Takashi Koizumi, who pays the late Japanese master a tribute in this film, attempted to make a film from Kurosawa's script, as he would have wished. The tribute quality of the film manifests itself most eminently when one puts After the Rain alongside Rashomon, Kurosawa's 1950 masterpiece, that is still possibly the best known Japanese film outside Japan. On the face of it, there is not much in common between the sombre, infinitely intriguing Rashomon and the delightful, lighthearted and light flooded After the Rain. In actual fact, there is a delicate web of links and connections between those two articulations, that correspond with each other. In both films most characters participate in several forms of judging, formal and informal, external and internal. They all judge and are being judged, cast adjudication and are subjected to it. In Rashomon a formal trial is depicted, alongside the internal ones. In After the Rain there is no formal trial, but all characters involved perform continuous ethical judgments of themselves and others. Rashomon begins in rain and ends with rain. Three people, who find shelter from the rain under the Rashomon gate, engage in narration. Two crimes -- a murder of a Samurai and rape of his wife -- are presented four times, in four different ways. The people at the gate renarrate the story of the formal judgment, where the different versions were first narrated, and, while doing so, judge the narrators, the characters of the narrative, and themselves.
