Shot in Super 16 mm and featuring a quartet of nuanced, understated performances from JEFF DANIELS (Something Wild), LAURA LINNEY (Mystic River), JESSE EISENBERG (The Social Network), and OWEN KLINE, this comic and poignant drama, peppered with autobiographical elements, deftly captures the heartache and confusion of a fracturing family. In his only directing stint, Brando captures the rugged landscapes of California’s Central Coast and Mexico’s Sonoran Desert in gorgeous widescreen, Technicolor images, and elicits from his fellow actors (including KARL MALDEN and PINA PELLICER) nuanced improvisational depictions of conflicted characters. Though overwhelmed by its director’s perfectionism and plagued by production setbacks and studio re-editing, One-Eyed Jacks stands as one of Brando’s great achievements, thanks above all to his tortured turn as Rio, a bank robber bent on revenge against his one-time partner in crime, the aptly named Dad Longworth (MALDEN). Brooding and romantic, Rio marks the last, and perhaps the most tender, of the iconic outsiders Brando imbued with such remarkable intensity throughout his career. In a visually sumptuous journey through the master’s unconscious, tales of childlike wonder give way to apocalyptic visions: a young boy stumbles on a fox wedding in a forest; a soldier confronts the ghosts of the war dead; a power-plant meltdown smothers a seaside landscape in radioactive fumes. Interspersed with reflections on the redemptive power of art, including a richly textured tribute to Vincent van Gogh (played by MARTIN SCORSESE), Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams is both a showcase for its maker’s imagination at its most unbridled and a deeply personal lament for a world at the mercy of human ignorance. • Greenberg (2011)
Greenberg (2011) “You like me so much more than you think you do.” Major Credits: Director: Noah Baumbach Screenplay: Noah Baumbach, from a story by Baumbach and Jennifer Jason Leigh Cinematography: Harris Savides Music: James Murphy Principal Cast: Ben Stiller (Roger Greenberg), Greta Gerwig (Florence), Rhys Ifans (Ivan), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Beth) Production Background: Baumbach, the son of two prominent New York writers whose divorce he chronicled in his earlier feature The Squid and the Whale (2005), co-wrote the screenplay with his then-wife, Jennifer Jason Leigh, who plays the role of Greenberg’s former girlfriend. His friend and sometime collaborator (they wrote The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou together), Wes Anderson, co-produced Greenberg with Leigh. Most of Baumbach’s films to date deal with characters who are disappointed in their lives, which do not conform to their ideal conceptions of themselves. At whatever age—a father in his 40s, his pretentious teenage son (The Squid and the Whale), a college graduate in her late twenties (Frances Ha, 2012)—they struggle to act like grownups. The casting of Greta Gerwig developed into an enduring romantic and creative partnership: Gerwig co-wrote and starred in his next two films, Frances Ha and Mistress America (2015). You can read about Baumbach and Gerwig in Ian Parker’s fine article published in New Yorker, April 29, 2013. Cinematic Qualities: 1. Screenplay: Like the work of one of his favorite filmmakers, Woody Allen, Baumbach’s dramedy combines literate observation (“All the men dress up as children and the children dress as superheroes”) and bitter commentary (“Life is wasted on… people”) with poignant confession (“It’s huge to finally embrace the life you never planned on”).

Kennedy had just been assassinated, the Civil Rights Act was mere months from inception, and the US was becoming more heavily involved in the conflict in Vietnam. It was 1964, and at The Factory in New York, Andy Warhol was experimenting with film. Over the course of two years, Andy Warhol selected regulars to his factory, both famous and anonymous that he felt had “star potential” to sit and be filmed in one take, using 100 foot rolls of film. It has been documented that Warhol shot nearly 500 screen tests, but not all were kept. Many of his screen tests have been curated into groups that start with “13 Most Beautiful…” To accompany these film portraits, Dean & Britta, formerly of the NY band, Luna, were commissioned by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to create original songs, and remixes of songs from musicians of the era. This endeavor led Dean & Britta to a third studio album consisting of a total of 21 songs titled, “13 Most Beautiful..

It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. This thesis uses the methodological framework of intertextuality to ground its treatment of the sources, but does not follow all of the assumptions of intertextual theorists. iii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. Superman was created in 1938, but the character developed significantly from his earliest incarnations.

  • Smart Cinema, DVD Add-Ons and the Re-Educated Viewer
MIT Conference May 13-15th 2011. Unstable Platforms: The Promise and Peril of Transition ‘Teaching Smart Cinema: DVD Add-ons and New Audience Pleasures’ Pat Brereton © [Extracts from ‘Cinema in Transformation: Smart Cinema, DVD Add-ons and New Audience Pleasures’ Palgrave Press 2011/2] Many scholars categorize new digital films, using concepts ranging from database narratives (Manovich), forking path narratives (Bordwell), multiple draft narratives (Branigan and Bordwell), twist films (Wilson 2006), complex narratives (Staiger, 2006), modular narratives (Cameron, 2006), puzzle films (Buckland, 2009) including Elsaesser‟s mind-games taxonomy. All of these terms help to flesh out this study‟s exploration of smart cinema, alongside new forms of digital film making and contemporary audience consumption. The term „Smart cinema‟ acquired popular currency in academic circles in the late 1990s. The most coherent explanation has been put forward by Jeffrey Sconce‟s essay (Screen 2002), who argues that smart films reflect the presence of a growing „culture of irony‟ and parody. Its intended audience is apparently the disillusioned yet highly educated new generation who display a form of ironic contempt and emotional distancing from their surroundings and socio-cultural existence. Smart movies like Donnie Darko broadly encapsulate what have been described as reflexive and playful postmodern texts, which in turn are augmented by the specific attributes of new digital media. These new attributes draw upon technological innovations facilitated by the computer and the internet, alongside the proliferation of video games and music videos, together with other new generational e-pleasures and e-cultural tastes. This paper will use films like Be Kind Rewind to demonstrate the importance of smart cinema for new generations, while drawing on the special issue on DVD add-ons for Convergence (2007) which I edited, that focused on how add-ons can strengthen the overall appeal of this consumer fan-driven medium and at the same time incorporate significant educational applications.
