Sure, some critics mentioned the writers when they declared the film "cliché" and attacked it. Since the previous Walt Disney Los Angeles film based on one of its theme park attractions was the unbear- able The Country Bears, Pirates of the Caribbean is surprisingly Above The Fold 370 N. It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. Smart Cinema, DVD Add-Ons and the Re-Educated Viewer

Unstable Platforms: The Promise and Peril of Transition ‘Teaching Smart Cinema: DVD Add-ons and New Audience Pleasures’ Pat Brereton © [Extracts from ‘Cinema in Transformation: Smart Cinema, DVD Add-ons and New Audience Pleasures’ Palgrave Press 2011/2] Many scholars categorize new digital films, using concepts ranging from database narratives (Manovich), forking path narratives (Bordwell), multiple draft narratives (Branigan and Bordwell), twist films (Wilson 2006), complex narratives (Staiger, 2006), modular narratives (Cameron, 2006), puzzle films (Buckland, 2009) including Elsaesser‟s mind-games taxonomy. All of these terms help to flesh out this study‟s exploration of smart cinema, alongside new forms of digital film making and contemporary audience consumption. The term „Smart cinema‟ acquired popular currency in academic circles in the late 1990s. The most coherent explanation has been put forward by Jeffrey Sconce‟s essay (Screen 2002), who argues that smart films reflect the presence of a growing „culture of irony‟ and parody. Its intended audience is apparently the disillusioned yet highly educated new generation who display a form of ironic contempt and emotional distancing from their surroundings and socio-cultural existence. Smart movies like Donnie Darko broadly encapsulate what have been described as reflexive and playful postmodern texts, which in turn are augmented by the specific attributes of new digital media. These new attributes draw upon technological innovations facilitated by the computer and the internet, alongside the proliferation of video games and music videos, together with other new generational e-pleasures and e-cultural tastes. This paper will use films like Be Kind Rewind to demonstrate the importance of smart cinema for new generations, while drawing on the special issue on DVD add-ons for Convergence (2007) which I edited, that focused on how add-ons can strengthen the overall appeal of this consumer fan-driven medium and at the same time incorporate significant educational applications. -

1 2019 Seminar Abstracts: Shakespeare in Film History Greg Semenza, University of Connecticut SAA Seminar Description: Shakespeare in Film History (#42). Saturday, April 20th. 4:00-6:00 PM. In spite of increased sensitivity within Adaptation Studies to the importance of history for adaptation and appropriation, the literary text too often continues to dominate the conception and structure of most studies of literature on film. This seminar seeks to redress this imbalance by exploring how Shakespeare films have functioned and evolved in the context of the film industry. Papers are welcome on the cultural and political forces at work in various eras of film history from 1895-2018. Seminar Respondent: Courtney Lehmann, University of the Pacific Eric Brown, University of Maine at Farmington “The Lost Years: All Is True and the Branagh Lacuna” For the better part of a decade, no film director did more to build and popularize cinematic Shakespeare than Kenneth Branagh. Critical and box office successes, his films were the crown jewels of 1990s Shakespeare on screen. At the turn of the 21st century, Branagh was poised to deliver increasingly experimental adaptive works: a musical Love’s Labor’s Lost, a Mafioso Macbeth, and a version of As You Like It set in Japan. Love’s Labor’s Lost, however, was perhaps the greatest flop of 2000 and doomed the others—As You Like It was eventually completed but had minimal theatrical release and maximal poor reception. Macbeth was never made. Twelve years have passed since Branagh’s last Shakespeare film, during which time he morphed from the gritty upstart crow of Henry V to a polished deliverer of recent Hollywood blockbusters. -

Klein’s Beer: Futurama Comedy and Writers in the Classroom Sarah J. Greenwald Appalachian State University Introduction Futurama [1] is an animated science fiction comedy with math, science, or programming jokes in almost every television episode. In the same way that history can provide context to mathematics in the classroom, the rich mathematical history of the show’s writers and the stories of their writing motivations can engage students. A combination of comedy references from the show and quotes from the writers is especially effective in helping to alleviate math anxiety and motivate students to learn and connect to mathematics. In this article we will examine numerous Futurama activities for the classroom, including discussions related to the writers and the representation of mathematics in popular culture, as well as activities related to humorous Futurama math references, including computational number theory and geometry. Figure 1: Klein’s Beer [1, 3ACV12 (The Route of All Evil)] Writers and Humor in the Classroom In the course of earning an undergraduate degree in the mathematical sciences, students study a broad range of mathematical techniques and disciplines. The need to master the fundamental skills of mathematics leads in many instances to a perspective in which mathematics exists unconnected to anything else. Students can become so focused on the present that they perceive mathematics as “closed, dead, emotionless, all discovered... [Teachers] can rescue students from the island of mathematics and relocate them on the mainland of life that contains mathematics that is open, alive, full of emotion, and always interesting” [3]. In the same way that real-life applications and technology can help students connect to mathematics, humorous popular culture references and the related history of the writers who create them can also foster connections. -

Our theoretical framework is Pettigrew’s (1990, Pettigrew, 1992, Pettigrew et al., 2001) process view of strategy development and Stacey’s (2000, Stacey et al., 2000) ‘bottom-up- teleology’. The contextual variables in which bricolage was enacted were: the history of the project plus four of Caves’ (2000) properties of the creative arts; namely the ‘nobody knows’ property, art for art’s sake, the motley crew property and the O-ring theory of production. Coppola’s account of how the movie project was crafted was transcribed using Nvivo and analysed using content analysis. The authors attempt to show that Coppola can be considered a bricoleur in the sense used by Lévi-Strauss (1962) rather than more recent interpretations. Coppola as bricoleur used human resource acquisition strategy; human resource development; and capability development and acquisition of resources as his repertoire of tools and resources to fashion his masterpiece. -

New and talented young producers such as Bert Schneider took great advantage of the new opportu- nities this system offered. Orson Welles, still self-exiled in Europe, himself wanted to take advantage ofthe changed climate in Hollywood. Thanks to the support of his new partner, Oja Kodar, Orson Welles decided that his films would explore sexuality in a more explicit way. Nudity, corporeity, and sex (though already appearing in his previous films) are copiously dealt with in The Other Side of the Wind, whose initial con- ception and realization was largely due to Oja Kodar. One of the film’s most iconic sequences, the “car sex scene”, features well-known Wellesian techniques as applied to the depiction of dominant female sexuality.
