Новий літак повинен був замінити застарілий Percival P.40 Prentice. Згідно з цими вимогами на фірмі Percival був розроблений літак P.56 Provost. Він представляв собою вільнонесучий низкоплан з трьохопорним шасі (з хвостовим колесом). Прототип (WE522) літака здійснив перший політ 24 лютого 1950 року. Були побудовані три дослідні зразки: два з двигуном Armstrong Siddеley Cheetah 18 і один з двигуном Alvis Leonides Mk 25. The Percival P.56 Provost was a British ab initio trainer that was developed for the Royal Air Force in the 1950s as a replacement for the Percival Prentice. It was a low-wing, monoplane with a fixed, tailwheel undercarriage and had an unusual side-by-side seating arrangement. The Provost has the distinction of being the last piston-engine basic trainer aircraft to be operated by the RAF. The Provost was later adapted to make use of a turbojet engine, producing the BAC Jet Provost.     THE ROYAL AIR FORCES ASSOCIATION Rutland Branch THE FLYING HORSESHOE Branch Newsletter March 2012 Annual General Meeting Our March meeting is of course by tradition the Rutland RAFA Branch AGM along with all the excitement that it throw’s up. Someone asked me if I had brought the matchsticks for my eyes which I suppose indicates what is expected at this annual event; and of course traditionally there is no speaker. However members were not to be daunted and showed up in great numbers. Perhaps it was the food!! But never the less they came along. Following the business of the meeting and a short break to top up glasses our President Sir John Sutton treated us too a highly amusing insight into his life in the Royal Air Force. Sir John went on to say, that as he was to talk to an ex Royal Air Force audience, that it would perhaps be appropriate if he talked about his own flying experiences, mixed with other stories that may raise a smile. Like most 18 year olds in 1950 he was called up for his two years national service. He didn’t come from a service family, but living in Lincolnshire and surrounded by RAF Stations, he felt that he would join the Royal Air Force. At this time, in the early 50s, there was growing concern about the Korean War and the RAF decided to expand and accept national servicemen for pilot training and Sir John was one of them. The training had to be completed within two years to enable the fully operational pilot to leave and serve on an auxiliary squadron.

    From Martlesham To Muscat - 1943 to 1996 A flying career: Air Commodore Robert Lightfoot Some readers will know that I have spent the large part of my life flying: in the military from the Piston Provost to the Tornado and in civil aviation from the Tiger Moth to the Boeing 747. This flying career began at Martlesham Heath. It is this Martlesham connection that leads to this article following a prompt from Bob Metson who is one of our MHAS members. My parents chose to move to Martlesham during the war from the small mining village of Audley in Staffordshire. There, the bombing risk came from near misses on the factories in Crewe and if there ever was a hit near our house I was too young to remember. In Martlesham however, at the very young age of four years I can recall the excitement of watching the Luftwaffe flying low over our house in Bealings Road and often chased by our fighters. The V1 was an equally exciting, albeit frightening, event but fortunately they were very rare. Waiting for the explosion after the pulse jet engine had cut out was an experience well embedded in my memory. Our protection was a steel frame in the house under which as many as possible would crawl but there was one between two houses and after my brother Ken, David Cook from next door and I had crept in there was no room for adults! Readers who lived on the base might like to note that this house, in common with many rural Suffolk houses at the time, had no mains water or drainage utilities.

    Profile provided by Warbird Alley, with permission of Buck Wyndham PROFILE: BAC 167 Strikemaster (Variants/Other Names: None) HISTORY: Grandchild of the propeller-driven Hunting Percival Provost training aircraft, and close sibling to the Jet Provost trainer, the two-seat, jet-propelled BAC 167 Strikemaster multi-role attack aircraft was deemed especially well-suited for advanced training, counterinsurgency, ground attack and reconnaissance functions. A direct derivative of the Jet Provost T Mk 5, the Strikemaster was modified with an up-rated engine, wing hard-points, a strengthened airframe, new communication and navigation gear, up-rated ejection seats, a revised fuel system, and shortened landing gear. Capable of operating from rough air strips, with dual ejection seats suitable even for low-altitude escape, it was widely used by the air forces of Botswana, Ecuador, Kenya, Kuwait, New Zealand, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Yemen and Sudan, and saw combat in Ecuador, Oman and South Yemen during its service life. In its combat configuration the Strikemaster was fitted with two .303 machine guns, each with 525 rounds of ammunition. With eight hard-points, the wings could carry an external load of 3,000 lbs. of bombs, rockets or Napalm. Of the 16 Strikemasters acquired by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1972, use of the aircraft was reduced from 1981 onward, after cracking was discovered in the main wing structures. Turbulence and high usage were given as the probable cause. Considering the necessary re-winging of the aircraft to be an unwarrantable expense, the RNZAF retired them in 1994, replacing them with the Aermacchi MB339-CB.
