The Climate Crisis is on full display as manifest by extreme weather events and an annual rise in mean global temperatures. The phenomena is hardly new but our inaction to slow the production of global carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is threatening civilization. We must take every action possible and the Clean Cars rule is not difficult. Major vehicle manufacturers are planning to phase out gasoline vehicles which will see a proliferation of electric cars and trucks within just a few years. Let's be proactive, encourage vehicle manufacturers, and show the world again how Minnesota can lead the way. Ten years ago, Apple introduced the Smart Phone. Today, nearly 8 out of 10 Americans own a Smart Phone, and over half of the world’s population own Smart Phones. Smart Phones have literally taken over the world. In 2012, Tesla introduced their revolutionary Model S electric car. It was Tesla’s first attempt at building an entire vehicle designed from the ground up, not just a conversion of an existing vehicle as was the case with the Tesla Roadster. Nobody thought Tesla would succeed as a car company let alone shake up the entire automotive manufacturing industry. Today, Tesla has sold over a million vehicles worldwide and their market capitalization is now worth more than GM and Ford combined! The rest of the auto manufacturers are scrambling to catch up with Tesla’s technology leadership. To date, electric vehicle sales haven’t exactly set the world on fire. The numbers have been growing, but are still only about 2 percent of total vehicle sales in 2019. The relatively small numbers are due to their higher cost (mostly due to the expensive high voltage lithium ion battery), limited availability and public skepticism of their practicality. In addition to this, we note that the seven-year auto loans will become entrenched in some markets such as the US, while contagion fear and environmental concerns will drive consumers to buy cars and adopt electric vehicles (EVs). • The experiences gathered during the lockdown period will define a ‘new normal’ for the autos industry, including improving the online shopping experience, video calls with potential clients to answer their specific questions, and providing secure online applications to finalise paperwork and a renewed focus on autonomous vehicles' importance. • Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will also go through a restructuring process, which will involve EV platform consolidation, automation, supply chain diversification and changes to OEMs' global operational network.
