NO. 13 Municipal, offices Durban 15-12-61 9.15.p.m. I investigated – I did not go to investigate personally. YUTAR: Bruno has given us details. NO. 14 I went to the scene early the following morning against room 16. I found 1 gl tin, 2/3 petrol – bulging outwards – same explosion had occurred. Lid of tin nearby bicycle tube attached with string. This was detonator – split out no damage. The bic. tube contained sulphur potasium chlorate office used by security police. A Bantu Det. Who was on call was to come to office next door. Ronnie Kasrils is thought to be responsible and he was COD member of Executive. Last saw him early in 1963. He attended Trade Union meetings. ACT 62 Similar tin in train whilst train in motion. Passenger train in 3rd class coach. Suburban train – Line frequently used – heavy traffic. Also powder on floor – tin also contained petrol. Bicycle tube also found containing - J 2 - sulphur and potasium chlorate. No damage was done. 4 Indian males charged Ebrahim Ismail N 4 Not. Bobenia N 1 G. Sammy Singh N 24 David Pinamol

N1 organiser for NIC N4 & N2 members for NIC David – not known – he gone No. 4 and N 1 pleaded guilty to Oct 62 ACT. 79: 14th 15th 10th 1962 William Ron Tin Bicyle and petrol – same mixture. Extent of damage R495 – the result of that and two others led to darkness Durban 3/4 hour. The Springfield Hospital and Nursing Home were in darkness also the Sanatorium. Ronnie Kasrils and one Absolom Dume still at large. ACT 104: Pylon next to railway line – main line – only one side – 3 supports – 1 portion shot out - safety fuse with matches – R1271-92 – cancellation and delay of several trains. 2 arrested - Bruno and Solomon Mbanjwa. ACT 120: 5-12-62 – Electric standards Durban Corp. serving one factory south of Durban – at the foot of a large hole in ground dent in standard – hole 3 ft down – estimated R100 – no explosives found – 4 Indians: Kirstein Moonsamy (N 13) Kirsten Dorsam (N 2X) Royowon Kirstein Sammy (N 6) Noronsammy Padeyachee - J 4 -

These four not know to me. N. Padaychee who committed perjury – State accepted plea for. ACT 122: Office of Kazee – front door – dynamite safety fuse timing device – match box – extensively damaged R100 – places of safety fuse. AS Kajee President – N10 opposed to NIC – he attended State Presidents – along a passage gives entrance to flats – office and residential block. Obvious danger to others. Ebrahim Ismal (4) Sing (24) David --- gave evidence (4) pleaded guilty (24) not guilty ACT 123: Similar – most on main line or few miles away. The most was severed on both sides just above ground level – cortex used to set onto two at the same time – safety fuse – R1271 Delay. Diversion and cancellation of trains. ACT 126, 127 and 128: Kwa Mashu Township 12-12-62 10.p.m. pipe bombs – 1 2/8” – 2 stopcorks – bedroom window – damage caused – window panes shattered – a hole through pelmet --- handed in bottle – next door in third case – no damage was done – they were sent for analysis.

The occupants were members of B. Residence Committee – The underground movement formed a Residence. - J 5 -

Association in opposition – thickly populated area. No arrests were made – he is outside outside Justice Mpanza (N 14) and one of trainees (27) 133: Main Post Office West Street Durban – galvanised iron piping – through --- mail letter box – large number of letters – galvanised iron in sorting room. No arrests – Ronnie Kasrils is suspected. 134: Pipe bomb – similar 133 – attached to cable – did not explode – powder --- capsule ½ eaten through with add – dock area is served. It is a busy place. Ebrahim Ismal No. 4 Sammy Singh (N 14) Ebrahim Ismail pleaded guilty to same. 135: The guards van passed over – cancellation of trains. It was obvious that safety fuse and cotex. It was concluded that attempts made to blow up whilst train running. No arrests – no suspects – damage 137: 11-1-63 – a pipe bomb – same a letter box – It blasted away a brick and letter box – the remains of pipe bomb – paper found – the office is first – car park. No persons arrested – Ronnie Kasrils . 139: Dynamite and safety fuse. The safety fuse still on the scene. Placed in chamber. The charge caused chamber to crash and the top to crumble up. The man hole flung – telephone wires cut. Served industrial area. The telephone wires reconnected. The chamber cost R260-00. Arrests: Moonsammy (13) Doosamy (2) K Don (6) Pleas of not guilty – Don discharged. 147: Mc Cord Hospital – room part of compound. - J 6 -

The room occupied by Induna – similar to main post office – placed against front right – metal frame bent and cardboard flung into room. The induna was asleep in explosion. Bantu males arrested but no figure. Mduli was P.E. and left country. 146: ATALIER I proceeded to the building having heard the explosion – I was 1½ miles away. The building had basement in which press was found Natalier – 1st floor Nationalist party. Dynamite and safety fuse – ledge above pavement – vertical concrete louvres 2 plate glass windows – the charge against a wall – severe damage to furniture and building inside outside – portion of concrete loovre struck a pedestrian with her husband and child. The streets was littered with debris from buildings. Windows of --- Industries. Hairdressers Engineering Works Robertson 96 . There was a car of employee in front also. Scholtz and his wife in the building. His wife was in basement she had to be treated for shock. The buildings were with radius of 20 yds. 2 Bantus. Michael Nbule he gave evidence and David Mkize (11) and information that Justice Mponzo was also there. Its office and residential area. Fairly thickly populated – damage R1000-00. 150: 3 telephone poles and three supports were sawn off – serve WE community. Riot Mkanazi (N 12) was arrested. I have seen him at meetings of Sactu – R100. 154: Municipal Beer Hall – Sunday afternoon – full of men – pipebomb was found in the beer hall – 2 men - J 7 - injured and received medical treatment – found remains of bomb and paper – similar to thae one at main P.O. 175: The door of the office where identity cards are issued – it was the same door item 79. The building is on the corner – an asbestos and wooden structure – Casa Mia Hotel also adjacent. The office R53-52 – Casa Mia R 104 – definite danger to kitchen staff of Casa Mia Hotel where window bent. No arrests – Bantu female Thereza shezi (N23) and others. Thereza not known to me. She worked Dr. Meidlinger. 176: Railway line 21-3 – both main lines – up and down. The communication cables also damaged. The rail of up main line 27” out off altogether on face of on coming passenger trains – it passed over the gap – a unit passed over and had cut the cortex and that charge did not explode 0 they had laid it across – the second charge intact – dynamite and cortex – numerous trains and cancelled. It has passengers found for Port Shepstone. 4 Indian males arrested: Ebrahim (4) Mdhenia (1) Singh (24) Pineman gave evidence. The 4 and 1 pleaded guilty to this charge 131: 7-4-63 – petrol bombs know as Molotov cocktails – I wooden constructed coach to catch fire – the fire was put out by crew – travelling whites and 2 non whites – 7.30 p.m. the line is not very busy. It is N. coast line. 3 arrests. Mtsali (16) Alfred Dumo (3) Shadrack Mapumolo (8). Shadrack I cant say about his politics. These 3 they pleaded not guilty. - J 8 -

189: 21-6-63 – a signalling apparatus extensively damaged – safety fuse found – cancellation of trains – very busy line. 4 Bantu males: Steven Mtsali (16) Duma (3) Riot Mkonozi (12) Shadrack Mapumola (3) Not certain of plea – Ebrahim Ismail (4) also pleaded guilty and also Billy Nair (18) Mathews No. 10 I do not know. David – 19 is committee member of Tea Workers union which is affiliated to society Given Pillay not known to me. Pair of gloves shown. one pair of gloves recovered in possession on Kirsten Doorsamy (N No. 2). The gave is exh 20. During April 1962 two explosive magazines broken into large quantity of Dyn. Gelignite detonators and cortex. The det. Was found in dipping tank – ½ stolen was found in a hole near Durban. During investigations recovered 109 sticks of dyn, safety fuse and a few detonators. 102 sticks paraffin tin Clairwood beach. 1 stick same beach. 6 sticks of Dyn. waiting room of Kloof R. Station after he had arrested Bruno, David Ismail – Bluff and beach are same 4 gal tin --- with elasto plaster – plastic wrapping – the tine was not painted – buried 10” in the ground, pointed out to us by certain of the accused. - J 9 -

CAPTAIN BOTHA In S.A. In charge of S/C Police at Springs. Was investigating officer in 7 acts of sabotage. NO. &: Pylon Jukskei river 8-10-61 – 9.30. short circuit. On investigation it was shown that the corner tower carrying high tension wires – 5 lines – the outside apparently cut - wires covered short circuit. The tower was half cut and unbolted – the short circuit serious – townships were – at the time R8000 – 10,000 Edenvale Hospital is 2 miles – had to be replaced. NO. 4: Telephone cables: - the same night outside municipal area of Springs just outside – 2 cables were cut with a hack saw – ½ mile further on 4 lines – the estimated damage R300. it serves Eastern Tvl. NO. 6: On the same night 10-11 p.m. there was an interruption – a mile outside Alberton – 20 telephone wires – the telephone wires were cut under the bridge – also to Eastern Tvl – direction to Heidelberg – R200. NO. 12: During 16/17 12th 1961 – disruption of lights. In fact there was a flickering of lights on wooden light poles cut – the damage 40 – 50 rand – this serves white residential area. ACT. 29: 20-12 2 electric pylons – some electric line --- and JHB – I mile from before directly in front – 2 were attached with explosives – at all 4 legs signs of explosives – caused damage to all 4 but not enough – found the remains of plastic container of watch - a number of electric wiring outside covering of dry battery – also 4” x 6” plastic holder on that machinery of alarm clock – dry battery connected with electric wire – from there connected up with other wiring – other wiring entangled. The plastic container was and with over R5000 – goes to hospital to European area – dwelling 3 yds away. ITEM. 45: - J 10 -

Power line Komatie P_/S to Kelvin --- line Germiston and Pretoria and also section of Pretoria – double line – there again on curve – the two inner ones were attached – one of the charges exploded – other 3 intact. The damage was considerable. But power did not fall down – pieces of watch – damaged battery and plastic similar to the one found Edenvale Hospital.

From there cortex up to the leg of next – underground – it led to 3rd and 4th – each 7 dyn. --- tied together plastic --- and --- on. The cortex snapped on the first explosion.

The 12” 15 ” underground – estimated damage R5000. ITEM 107: 4.40. in the morning an explosion occurred the same to power as 45 again at turn also damaged – only outside legs of outside tower – it fell over against other – short circuit – electric train service between Germiston and Pretoria and residential. Again light electrical wiring – dry battery – not any part of watch. Both severe explosions – tore off concrete block and tore the foot off the tower – R5000 to R10.000. This tower had to be replace in its entirety. Nobody detained or arrested – someone after 11-7-63. XX BY Y. BERRANGE I think it is correct that hospital are served separately to cover for emergency. I am satisfied that item No. 4 took place on the 5th. I went to item 7 first and then to Springs. - J 11 -

I went to Alberton the next day before noon – wires were repaired. I had subordinate and had repairs had been affected – I attended the scenes – I was not first to discover it. The pylons similar technique to get one pylon – I read newspapers – I remember No. 7 – I cannot remember the Committee Liberation. I am aware of National Liberation Committee – there is quite a lot said – I cannot remember a particular act. The claims were made after Oct 1961? I can’t deny that. No acts in my area after Nov. 1962. MAJOR MOOLMAN Stationed at JHB but now Boksburg. 16-12-61 K investigated Dube. On arrival found Petrus Molife dead Benjamin Romotsi had to be taken to hospital – I arranged it. I found that the clothes in small pieces – human flesh all over – pieces of rubber – pieces of glove. Motor car was Orlando Police station – also took was Orlando Police station – also took clothes of the deceased. I saw plastic bottle exh. 21. The red looked similar to 20 but another was dark brown. I found a ½ 4” bottle of glycerine and french chalk – gay --- for bomb. Francis Smith handed over to me 20 and 21. The P.O. window pains were broken – places were lying-about 15 pieces – away – the ceiling was broken. Some of the furniture rendered unserviceable. Behind box-hole 12” x 12”. On the floor I saw safety fuse also a detonator – I ascertained the damaged R500. Inspector Explosives took possession --- reported. It is in Evaton BantuLocation – non white section is served. There are houses and school – it is thickly populated. XX: No questions. ------ACT 160: OOSTHUIZEN Ladysmith – Natal.
