6.1 Introduction — In this research work 13 taluka’s of Pune district has been studied as area of research. It is very much important that Pune district should be observed by all angles. Geographically, Economically Pune district is having scope for development. If the women members of self help group properly guided for micro enterprises, the resource available will be properly used. It will be helpful to create income generating activities. 6.2 Profile of Pune district — Pune is 'The Detroit of ', It is an industrial center as well as agriculture based economy. It is an important IT Hub of India. Table 6.1

92 6.2.1 Geographically position of Pune District -

Pune district is located in the western part of the state of , bounded by district to the northwest, Raigad to the west, district to the south, district to the southeast and district to the north and northeast. The district is situated in the or Sahyadri mountain range and it extends on to the on the west. This is the second most industrialized district of the state covering an approximate area of 700 sq. kms. The world's second largest forging company ( Ltd) is located here. Cummins Engines Co Ltd has a Research & Technology India center in Pune in addition to its manufacturing plant. Other Engineering companies include Alfa Laval, Sandvik Asia, Thyssen K.rupp (formerly Backau Wolf), KSB Pumps, Finolex, Greaves India, Forbes Marshall, etc. Numerous small and medium-sized enterprises have grown in the city. There are agro industries- 12 Shugar Factories, 5 Cotton Mills. 6.2.3 Software industry position —

Pune has a growing software industry. Many of India's major software companies such as Xansa, TCS, , Wipro, Satyam, KPIT Cummins, Persistent Systems and Kanbay Software have their branches in Pime. Global majors like HSBC Global Technology, IBM, Siemens, EDS, I-Flex, Cognizant, Symantec and Zensar have a major presence in Pune's various Software Technology Parks and other areas. Some of the prominent IT parks in the city are the Hinjewadi IT Park, Cyber city, Mari soft IT Park (Kalyaninagar) etc. The city has become a prominent place for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies. Companies like Convergys, WNS, Progeon, EXL and Mphasis have started their operations in Pune. The city has huge human resources to operate these companies. Pune also houses the headquarters of the Bank of Maharashtra.

93 To facilitate this explosive economic growth in Pune, the city and the state authority have taken several steps to popularize the industrial policy and other aspects relating to establish industries.

6.2.4 Weather- Average rainfall in the district is 600 to 700 mm. This is usually during the months from July - October. Moderate temperatures are mainly observed here. The rainfall is unpredictable in time with the Indian monsoon. Summers here begin from early March to July. Summers are dry and hot. The temperature ranges from 20°C to 38°C, though at the peak they may reach 40°C. From November to January, is the winter season. Temperatures at the peak drop to single digits but usually they hover around 9°C to 14°C sometimes lowers up to 3°C. January to March is the month with moderate temperatures. In year due rainfall stress in June, & up to 20 September agriculture sector come in danger. 6.2.5 Rivers and lakes and Dams i) Major rivers of the district are: Pushpavati, Krushnavati, Kukadi, Meena, Ghod, Bhima, Bhama, Andhra, Indryani, Pavna, Mula, Mutha, Ambi, Mose, Shivganga, Kanandi, Gunjavni, Velvandi, Neera, Karha etc ii) Some major dams are: Pimpalgaon (Pushpavati), Manikdoh,Yedgaon (Kukadi), Meena (Meena), Dimbe (Ghod), Chas-Kaman and Ujani (Bhima), Andhra (Andhra), Valvhan (Indrayani), Pavna (Pavna), (Mula), Temghar, Khadakwasla (Mutha), Varasgaon (Ambi), Panshet (Mose), Chapet (Kanandi), Bhatgar (Velvandi), , Veer (Neera) Lonavla region (Wadgaon- Taluka) can be called as lake district of Maharashtra due to numerous lakes in this area viz, Bhushi, The Lonavla lake, INS , Pavna, Valvhan, Tungarli, Andhra, Shirawta lake. However the Sahyadris and its branches offer lot of opportunity for damming the streams leading to large number of lakes in Pune district. iii) Forest Area : Total area under reserved forest is 1598 sq. Km. The major area is in Taluka Maval, Khed, and .

94 6.2.6 Demographics As of the census of 2001, there were 7,232,555 people and 1,517,041 households. The population density was 462 people per /km^. In the district the population was spread out with 6,85,022 under the age of 4; 1,491,352 from 5 to 15; 4,466,901 from 15 to 59 and 5,89,280 60 years of age or older. For every 1000 males age 6 and older, there were 919 females. Among the total working population 47% workers are enggaged in primary sector 6.2.7 Live Stock; Total live stock is 22,90,000. Livestock population in pune district is divided into poultry (45%) and milking animals(49%) such as Buffelo, Goat, Sheep and Cow. Higher population of Poultry in Taluka Haveli, Maval, and catre to the demand of urban area.Similarly, a large population of milking animals. 6.2.8 Primary and Secondary Education Public education in Pune District is administered by the Zilla Parishad.There are a number of Primary and Secondary Schools in the districts. 6.2.9 Cities and towns a) Cities Pune city and the twin city - are the major cities in the district. Pune city is administered by the Pune Municipal Corporation while Pimpri - Chinchwad is administered by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. There are three areas in the district. 1) Pune Cantonment 2) Cantonment 3 ) Road Cantonment blTowns Some smaller towns in the district with Nagarpalikas or Municipal Councils are: Junnar , , Khed , Chakan ,Lonavla - ,, , , , , ,Shirur , Indapur , Walchandnagar , , Baramati , Wadgaon There is one fast-developing village which is not administered by any municipal corporation. This village is looked after by Gram Panchayat.

95 6.2.10 Pilgrimage centers ,Dehu , Bhimashankar , Jejuri, , Ozar, Lenyandri , Morgaon, Theur, Bhigwan 6.2.11 Forts There are several forts in and around Pune District, Jivdhan, , Chavand, , Narayangad, Chakan or Sangramgad, , ,, Fort or Kathingad , , (Korlai) or Kondhana, Rajgad , Toma Fort or Prachandagad , Purandar and Vajrangad (Rudramal) , Malhargad (Sonori) , Rohida , , There are many small hill forts and numerous fortified castles. 6.2.12 Transport a) Air Pime International Airport (lATA: PNQ) is located at Lohegoan, northeast of Pime city. The flights to a number of domestic and international destinations are operated from this airport. b) Highways Total road length of Pune district is 13,642 km. Several National Highways and State Highways crisscross Pune district. They include; Pune and Pune National Highway (NH 4) Pime Sholapur National Highway (NH 9) Pune Nasik National Highway (NH 50) Mumbai Pime Expressway c) Railway Lines Pime is well connected to , Calcutta, Madras, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. 6.2.13 Entrepreneurship Development Institutions - District Industries Center (DIC) Maharashtra Center for Entrepreneurship Development (MCCD),Maharashtra Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation (MITCON), Bank of maharashtra- Lead Bank, Small Industries

These are the institutions creating awareness of entrepreneurship. 6.3 Conclusion - Pune district is having a huge scope for entrepreneurship. The micro enterprises may play supportive role for the development of various industries. The members of women self help group should be properly trained and guided by Government, NGOs, Banks and other agencies.
