Government Information at a Library near You: The Federal Depository Library Program The Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) was established by Congress to ensure that the American public has access to its Government's information (44 U.S.C. §§1901-1916). For more than 140 years, depository libraries have supported the public's right to know by collecting, organizing, preserving, and assisting users with information from the Federal Government. The Government Printing Office provides Government information products at no cost to designated depository libraries throughout the country. These depository libraries, in turn, provide local, no-fee access in an impartial environment with professional assistance. The collections contain information on • careers, • business opportunities, • consumer information, • health and nutrition, • legal and regulatory information, • demographics, and • countless other subjects reflecting the activity of the Government, in print, microform, CD-ROM, and online publications. Federal depository libraries are located in nearly every congressional district throughout the United States and its territories. Selective depository libraries tailor their selections of Government information products to their community's primary needs. Regional depository libraries receive all the products available through the program. Any member of the public can visit these depository libraries and use the Federal depository collections. Before visiting a depository library, call to verify their hours of operation. Preface The print and electronic publications distributed to the depository libraries are listed in the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, available on GPO Access at <http://catalog.gpo.gov>. Once an information product is identified, a link is available to locate depository libraries that receive that product. The Catalog of U.S. Government Publications can therefore be used to determine what recent titles are available in the libraries and which depository libraries have them. Cataloging records for online publications contain links to the content at either the publishing agency's Web site or on a GPO server. Through cooperative collection development, interlibrary loan resource sharing, and the complete collections housed at regional depositories, the system provides service and access to all. *************** Categories of Depository Libraries Type of Library Number Percent Academic (general) 652 52 Public 235 19 Academic Law 152 12 Community College 63 5 Federal Agency 44 3 State 42 3 State Court 37 3 Special 17 1 Federal Court 13 1 Military Service Academy 4 1 Native American Tribal Colleges 3 1 ***** ****** * Online Directory Access The Federal Depository Library Directory is updated monthly and available online at <http://www.gpoaccess.gov/libraries.html>.
