For more than 140 years, depository libraries have supported the public's right to know by collecting, organizing, preserving, and assisting users with information from the Federal Government. The Government Printing Office provides Government information products at no cost to designated depository libraries throughout the country. These depository libraries, in turn, provide local, no-fee access in an impartial environment with professional assistance. The collections contain information on careers, business opportunities, consumer information, health and nutrition, legal and regulatory information, demographics, and countless other subjects reflecting the activity of the Government, in print, microform, CD-ROM, and online electronic media. Federal depository libraries are located in nearly every congressional district throughout the United States and its territories. Selective depository libraries tailor their selections of Government information products to their community's primary needs. Regional depository libraries receive all the products available through the program. Any member of the public can visit these depository libraries and use the Federal depository collections. Before visiting a depository library, call first to verify hours of operation. iv 1 The publications distributed to the depository hbraries, including Government electronic products, are listed in the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, available on GPO Access at <http://www.gpo.gov/catalog>. Once a tangible information product is identified, a link is available to locate depository libraries that receive that product. The GPO Access Web site can therefore be used to determine what recent titles are available in the libraries, and which depository libraries have them. Cataloging records for online products generally contain links to the content at an official Web site. The cataloging records, in abbreviated form, are also published in the paper Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications. The stories collected here demonstrate Rutgers University Libraries’ commitment to supporting the mission of Rutgers University and to building a strong foundation for academic success and research. Thanks to the publication of a large, rigorous new study, “The Impact of Academic Library Resources on Undergraduates’ Degree Completion,” we know that academic libraries can have a big impact on student outcomes. This bodes well for the thousands of students who use the Libraries each day, but it also means we have to make sure our core services meet their needs and expectations and that we are ready to support them throughout their academic careers. This presentation is largely about strategies for dealing with legacy description. Not just in terms of data migration or updating standards, but what to do when you inherit a large scale collection that was organized using a methodology that no longer works in a 21st century context. This is what happened to me at SUNY Maritime with the college’s institutional records. SUNY Maritime College Maritime College was the first maritime school in the country, founded in 1874. As such it became a model for subsequent maritime schools. There are only five other state maritime colleges and one federal academy in the nation. These schools train students to become licensed merchant mariners. Merchant mariners operate the large-scale commercial vessels that move goods around the world. The Merchant Marine may also be called to active duty during times of war, moving troops and supplies. Maritime College had no land-based campus until 1938.

It 2015 OFFICERS includes professional and paraprofessional staff, public library trustees, and friends of libraries. GLA was founded in 1897 for the purposes of promoting public library PRESIDENT funding, establishing a library training program in the state, and setting up a state LACE KEATON commission to oversee the library interests of the state. Its current focus lies along Director, Newton County Public Library System similar lines, with legislative, financial, technological and library training issues, and advocacy for libraries of all types being among its chief concerns. VICE-PRESIDENT/ PRESIDENT-ELECT With membership approaching 700, GLA represents all library interests in Georgia. CATHY JEFFREY The Atlanta Emerging Librarians, the Carterette Series Webinars, Georgia Library Associate Director, Clayton State University Day, the GLA Mid-Winter Meeting and the state’s participation in the ALA National Library Day are examples of major activities of the association. Elizabeth Drexel Dahlgren, by Adolfo Felice Muller-Ury, depicts the Georgetown University benefactress in life size, full length, in a formal, fur-trimmed satin gown. The imposing 79 by 46-inch painting hung in the foyer outside Riggs Library for many years. Unfortunately, the lower part of the canvas and its original antique frame suffered damage, but are now repaired and restored.
