Assignments 9ab e2 BE-20-04-27 I. My favourite film – review of three films Read these reviews of three old videos. Daylight (1996) Rob Cohen’s film is an old-fashioned1 disaster movie2. It stars3 Sylvester Stallone as an ordinary person who saves the day when a group of people get stuck4 in the road tunnel between Manhattan and New Jersey. The film isn’t too scary because you know exactly what is going to happen next. I found it fun to guess what was going to happen next. I was usually right! I’ve seen it all before in the old disaster movies but I still enjoyed it. Titanic (1998) James Cameron’s film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet broke all records to become the most successful film in cinema history. The film, which cost $200 million to make, tells the tragic story of how at 11.40 pm on Sunday April 14, 1912, the passenger ship the Titanic crashed into an iceberg on its first journey from Southampton to New York and sank in the icy waters of the Atlantic two hours later. The film uses a lot of real events but Cameron chose to make the love story between Jack and Rose the centre of the film. It’s romantic and full of tragedy. Scream 2 This scary film stars Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox. It’s an old film but is sure to give you the shivers5. This is the story: Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has finally got over6 her experience in Scream 1 and is about to start college with her boyfriend Derek. Everything seems to be just great. But then the horror begins as the characters start disappearing, murdered by a mysterious killer. News of the murders gets out and the media rush to Windsor College. Everyone is a suspect and nobody can be trusted. As the tension7 rises, you wonder who will be the next victim. Policeman Dewey appears and helps journalist Gale Weathers to catch the killer. When Sidney tries to hide8, the masked monster chases her and the tension becomes unbelievable. She doesn’t want to become the next victim. It’s so exciting and scary that you’ll forget to eat your popcorn. Our opinion: If you like films that make you frightened, you’ll love this one. But be careful – you might jump out of your seat onto the person next to you. Scream 2 is scarier and funnier than Scream 1 and the ending is much better. 1 old-fashioned altmodisch 2 disaster movie Katastrophenfilm 3 (to) star sb. jn. in der Hauptrolle zeigen 4 (to) get stuck stecken bleiben 5 (to) give you the shivers dich zum Schaudern bringen 6 (to) get over sth. sich von etw. erholen 7 tension Spannung 8 (to) hide sich verstecken 1 a Match the statements Read the following sentences and tick the film which matches the statement: Daylight Titanic Scream 2 1 It’s the scariest movie of the three. 2 The main part of the film takes place at a college. 3 This film is a love story and so it’s the most romantic of the three. 4 This film shows what happens when a group of people are stuck in a tunnel. 5 The star of this film is chased by a masked monster. 6 This film takes place on a ship. b Your choice of film 1 Which of the three films would you choose to see and why? 2 Which one interests you the least?
