Comparison of Adult Brassier Between Korea and Japan -Based on the Information on the Internet ・ IJCC, V이 . 7, No. 2, 112-122(2004) 36 Comparison of Adult Brassier between Korea and Japan -Based on the Information on the Internet ・ Mi-Sun Joen, Myung-Ja Park and Kyu-Hye Lee* Department of Clothing and Textiles, Hanyang University (Received June 3, 2004 : Accepted November 13, 2004) Abstract A brassier supports and protects breasts and makes a better shape of the upper half of the body through shaping breasts. A brassier, therefore, is recognized as the key underwear for female. Recently, the distri bution structure and channels of the brassiere industry is diversified from conventional type of markets to department stores, convenience stores, and internet shopping mall. Studies on the sales of brassieres via internet, however, is not sufficient even though the market size has been dramatically increased thursdays. The study on the size structure (including the size and the materials fabric of brassieres circulating via internet) is especially rare. Therefore, this study tries to comply with increasing requests of consumers through comparing brassier brands on internet. In depth, this study compares cases of Korea and Japan in terms of availability of website on sales, quality indication like materials and functions, and size. The results indicated that there were three companies in Korea which run a website and make a sale through a website. All three Japanese companies operate a website and make sales on a website as well. In terms of size, Korean companies diversify their size of products in two ways. It varies from A cup to D cup based on cup size, and 65 to 100 according to its entire size. On the other hand, Japanese companies use AA, A to I to measure cup size, and 65 to 100 for entire size. THE HONG KONG POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY INSTITUE OF TEXTILES AND CLOTHING MATERNITY GARMENT TREATMENT FOR THE RELIEF OF LOW BACK PAIN SIMONE HO SIN MAN A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2008 DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated to my family Background Low back pain (LBP) is the most common musculoskeletal problem during pregnancy. Pregnant women traditionally wear maternity support belts for back discomfort and have experienced pain relief. However, the designs of these maternity support garments lack scientific research and their clinical efficacy remains elusive. Limited evidence is available to substantiate its putative beneficial effects. Aims This study aims to investigate the garment needs of pregnant women in terms of physical and psychological comfort, based on which to establish design criteria, to develop a maternity support garment, and to evaluate the effect in the maternity garment treatment for the relief of LBP. Methods This study was conducted in three phases: a) an exploratory phase, b) a developmental phase, and c) an evaluative phase. In the exploratory phase, a longitudinal study of 29 pregnant women was undertaken to investigate which biomechanical measures should be used to specify the functional requirements of the maternity support garment. In-depth interviews and wear trials were completed to elicit responses of pregnant women (10 in personal interviews and 14 in wear trials) on 8 maternity support garments. Fabric objective measurements of the same 8 tested garments and 16 alternative samples were conducted before material selection for the first garment prototype. In the developmental phase, the functional garment design criteria were determined and several prototypes were made based on DeJonge’s design framework.

FROM THE CORSET TO SPANX: SHAPEWEAR AS A MARKETPLACE ICON Abstract: This article presents the marketplace icon of shapewear—clothing that changes the shape of the human body by compressing or enhancing it. The trajectory of shapewear from the highly structured corset of the 16th century to the elastic Spanx of the 2000s evidences how this marketplace icon has come into being. Shapewear has materialized many evolving forms of beauty standards and gender roles as it participates in body-centered market assemblages. Market actors, such as manufacturers, designers, media, celebrities, activists, physicians, and consumers, translate shapewear to materialize intentions in the female body, shaping it accordingly. Whether promoting female autonomy or oppression, shapewear stands as a marketplace icon because it has maintained stable market appeal across time and body-centered market assemblages: it shapes the female body while symbolically articulating women’s roles.
