1 Sex differences in preferences for humor produced by men or women: Is humor in the sex of the perceiver? [word count = <2500] Address correspondence to: 2 ABSTRACT It is a common argument that men are funnier than women. Recently, this belief has received modest empirical support among evolutionary psychologists who argue that humor results from sexual selection. Humor signals intelligence, and women thus use humor to discriminate between potential mates. From this, it follows that in addition to men being skilled producers of humor, women should be skilled perceivers of humor. Extant research has focused on humor production; here we focus on humor perception. In three studies, men and women identified the most humorous professional comedian (Studies 1 and 2) or individual they know personally (Study 3). We found large sex differences. In all three studies, men overwhelmingly preferred humor produced by other men, whereas women showed smaller (study 1) or no (studies 2 and 3) sex preference. We discuss biological and cultural roots of humor in light of these findings. 3 Sex differences in humor perception: Is humor in the sex of the perceiver? Although sex differences in the ability to produce humor have been debated at least since the 17th century (Congreve, 1695/1761; for more recent discussion, see the dialog between Hitchens and Stanley, Hitchens, 2007; Stanley, 2007), surprisingly few empirical studies exist on the topic. Yet understanding any sex difference in humor production or perception is important, since research suggests that humor mediates crucial social, psychological, and physiological processes. Socially, humor performs invaluable roles in persuasion (Mulkay, 1988) and managing personal relationships (Shiota, Campos, Keltner, & Hertenstein, 2004). -

Brooke Trantor ’11 pursues a lifelong dream as a student in the legendary Second City improv troupe’s Hollywood conservatory. By SARAH (ZELLER) JULIAN '07 Devoting your life to comedy takes a serious amount of work. That’s what Brooke Trantor ’11, found when she moved to Los Angeles and jumped headfirst into an acting career one year ago. This winter, the IWU acting major will graduate from Second City Hollywood’s Conservatory, where she has studied improvisational and sketch comedy in addition to working as a producer, intern, house manager and box office employee. Launched in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood in 1959, the legendary Second City improv group has expanded to L.A. and Toronto. Its alumni constitute an A-list of comedians, including John Belushi, Mike Myers, Stephen Colbert, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tina Fey. It has also established training centers taught by improv pros, many who are current Second City performers. -

Wainberg1 Abstract: This study is a content analysis of jokes produced and presented by stand-up comedians that in various parts of the world deal with a common theme, the inclusion of the Arab and the Muslim communities in modernity. This kind of humor became popular in many countries of the Middle East and Africa, similar to what is occurring in other continents. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt nowadays tolerate, to some degree, the dissident humor proposed by such humorists. Seeing the Arab and Muslim societies laugh at themselves is a new and startling occurrence, since it breaks with the stereotypical image that they are unable to bear the satire and irony for being dominated by fear and conservatism. Lloyd Langford Comedian / Writer / Actor / Voice Artist
LLOYD LANGFORD COMEDIAN / WRITER / ACTOR / VOICE ARTIST Lloyd Langford is a stand-up comedian, writer and actor from Wales, who has cemented himself as audience favourite here in Australia. Since first coming to our shores in 2015 as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Lloyd has toured the country extensively and become a fan favourite and regular on hit Network Ten show Have You Been Paying Attention? In 2021, Lloyd embarked on a national tour with his partner and fellow comedian Anne Edmonds. Their show Business With Pleasure has played sold out shows in theatre’s around the country including the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre and Malthouse Outdoor Stage. Lloyd also performed a sold out run of his solo show Jazzed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, including extra shows at the Arts Centre Playhouse. He’s also a frequent visitor to New Zealand, performing stand up at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, Christchurch Busker’s Festival, and appearing on several TV programs such as 7 Days, Have You Been Paying Attention NZ, and Best Bits. While Lloyd is a relative newcomer to our part of the world, he is an accomplished and in demand artist who has been performing and writing comedy for nearly two decades. He has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe since 2002, been invited to Just for Laughs Montreal, and performed stand-up from Abu Dhabi to Zurich. His UK television appearances include QI, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Ask Rhod Gilbert, Russell Howard’s Good News, and Celebrity Mastermind. He can be regularly heard as co-host of The Rhod Gilbert Show on BBC Radio Wales, and on comedy programmes such as BBC Radio 4’s The Unbelievable Truth and The News Quiz. -

The most popular contemporary form of improvised performance is improv comedy, which maintains a philosophy that is deeply entrenched in the idea that a show only happens once. The history, principles, and techniques of improv are well documented in texts and in moving images. There are guides on how to improvise, articles and books on its development and cultural impact, and footage of comedians discussing improv in interviews and documentaries. Yet recordings of improv performances are much less prevalent, despite the fact that they could have significant educational, historical, or entertainment value. Unfortunately, improv theatres are concentrated in major cities, and people who live outside of those areas lack access to improv shows. This limits the scope for researchers as well. -

Her art was used by Steven H. Silver for last year’s issue of Argentus. She’s done a lot of for The Drink Tank, a cover for Claims Department, so on and so forth. She’s certainly on my ballot, along with Espana Sheriff (for the fine stuff she’s done in these pages, at art shows and the logo for my TAFFzine), and Genevieve, and Dan Steffan (the fact that he’s only been nominated once disturbs me) and Ditmar. I can also sign off an a bunch of other art- ists as worthy of nomination. Taral Wayne, Spring Schoenhuth, Brad Foster, Frank Wu, Brianna Ska- peKat-Wu, Mike McLaughlin, Dave Howell (did you see last year’s Hugo award? He designed it and it’s amazing!) and Jason Shcachat, and on and on. I tend to nominate people who aren’t regulars on the ballot because I know there are a lot of folks who will do that for me. no Quads, but had excellent footwark and the jumps I would love to see Mo on the ballot. Stones 2 Teaching Political Humor: Entertainment, Exaggeration, and Echo Chambers Emily Stones, Regis University Overview This three-part lesson plan aims to deepen students’ understanding of how mediated humor impacts public perception of political events and political players. The activities are designed to work with current events or issues preoccupying the political-cultural landscape at the time of class instruction. The lesson plan is adaptable for online instruction. The first and (optional) second class periods focus on the function of political parody and draw heavily from Jason T. Peifer’s (2013) analysis of Saturday Night Live parodies of Sarah Palin. Peifer’s concepts of parodic reflection, refraction, and creation are easily translatable to parodies of contemporary political figures, like Donald Trump, and help students analyze the critical distance that makes parody humorous. The third lesson explores the circulation of humor and how comedians create echo chambers that amplify select perspectives. All three lessons have been successfully implemented in Political Communication and Communication Theory courses. The third lesson is especially well-suited for a media literacy course. Rationale It is difficult to imagine a political environment void of humor. The capacity of humor to gain attention, enhance memory, and influence public opinion has been recognized since the time of Ancient Greece and Rome (Benacka 2017).
